Carleton Kelsey

edit

I am inclined to shorten the Carleton Kelsey discussion, which also needs some other editing. The two history books mentioned could be listed in the Reference section. Also, the general biographic info should be moved to a separate article on Kelsey, assuming he meets Wikipedia's notability requirements. I will wait a while to see if anyone answers before attempting these edits. Jonathanwallace (talk) 13:33, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

It has been at least a year since this article was on my watchlist. This anonymous edit [1] added the material in question, before I knew Wikipedia existed. The material seems pleasant and harmless, so I wouldn't trouble myself with a possible earlypedia irregularity in such a sleepy article. Someone with a greater interest may wish to search for the book, trim the text, and do other work on the topic, perhaps even delete the material as unreffed if a modest searching effort comes up dry. Thanks, Jim. I will make the edit at some point. I found a source for at least one of the books, and will trim the reference, moving unsourced anecdotes here to the discussion page in case anyone can find a source and wants to restore them. In general, this looks to me like a stub bio of Kelsey embedded in the Amagansett article. If moved to a separate article as it should be, it would have to overcome WP:RS and notability concerns. By the way, couldn't find "earlypedia" in a search, is it your own coinage? And does it mean the kind of thing you only worry about when new to Wikipedia? ;-) Jonathanwallace (talk) 14:24, 15 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Here is the colorful but largely unsourced Carleton Kelsey material in case someone can find sources or wants to propose a Wikipedia bio of him. This is colorful but seems to be based on personal remoniscences of the original editor, and goes into such detail that it essentially embeds a Kelsey bio in the Amagansett article. I am shortening the reference and adding a source for the one book I could verify.

Two history books are 'Images of America: Amagansett' by Carleton Kelsey (died in 2005, aged 92 years) and Lucinda Mayo (descendant of one of Amagansett's 17th century founders); and Kelsey's 'Amagansett, A Pictorial History'. Carleton Kelsey was a schoolteacher and town clerk before becoming director of the Amagansett Free Library—a post in which he served until the age of 86. Town Historian and charter board member of the Amagansett Historical Association, he also performed in regional community theater for decades, and gave regular lively talks on regional history to academic and community groups. He could often be found sharing Amagansett "lore & legend" over breakfast at Estia with such well-known residents as Alec Baldwin, another Long-Island native (Massapequa). Carleton's extraordinary collection of over eighteen thousand Long Island photographs, dating back to 1860 and the American Civil War, included ascendant Kelseys, several of them in Civil War uniforms. The photographs were bequeathed by him to the Amagansett Historical Association. His research papers fill a room of the Carleton Kelsey wing of the Library. Alec Baldwin composed a moving eulogy about his friendship with Carleton, it is posted on the internet. Mr. Baldwin had at one time purchased the historic house in which Mr. Kelsey had been born in Amagansett.
