Shiranui

edit

To be very clear, this page is about the player character of Amaterasu in the form of the white wolf, aka Okami Amaterasu. That's how she's presented in Okami and in MvC3. While it is the case that in the 100 yrs-prior battle that Amaterasu inhabited the wolf known as Shiranui, that is not the same character for the purposes of either game, it was another mortal wolf temporarily posseses by Amaterasu. As such, we need to avoid the confusion of trying to call them the same character, as they are not. --MASEM (t) 01:22, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Request

edit

From "Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests#Amaterasu (Ōkami)":

A fresh pair of eyes would be nice. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 22:21, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Gabriel:

Would you please clarify "a fresh pair of eyes" for me? I have two basic approaches to a copy edit:

 • I make minor changes directly to the article and list lots of other suggestions here on the "Talk" page. For example, if I thought a sentence should be deleted because it is vague and unimportant, I would list it on the "Talk" page;
 • I make more changes directly to the article and, consequently, list fewer suggestions here on the "Talk" page. For example, if I thought a sentence should be deleted because it is vague and unimportant, I would delete it.

Which do you prefer?
--LukasMatt (talk) 02:58, 23 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

@LukasMatt: The second option is fine with me. If we disagree on something we can discuss here. And, it will only occur if you do something unaccountable. With a good rationale and the credit I give to GoCE members it'll hardly happen. Cheers, Gabriel Yuji (talk) 21:14, 23 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Lead section

edit
 • Used the "lead=yes" parameter twice because Amaterasu is written in katakana and Ōkami Amaterasu is written in kanji. If you only want "Japanese:" to appear on the first occurrence, then the kanji characters must be enclosed in nowrap.
 • Replaced #tag:ref with refn

the magic word #tag:ref is valid, but the sequence of parameters is invariant and nonintuitive. refn and its variants use this markup internally

"nonintuitive"–it's difficult to find documentation on #tag:ref; it's easy to find documentation on refn

Appearances

edit
Suggestions for major rewrite of "Appearances" section

Characteristics

edit

According to "Wikipedia:WikiProject Fictional characters/Style guide", the next section in the article should be entitled "Concept and creation". For an excellent example, see "Mario#Concept and creation".

If insufficient material exists for a "Concept and creation" section, then the Style guide allows a "Characteristics" section.

Important notes:

1. It shouldn't be a problem to write about the characteristics of Amaterasu. Here are characteristics of Mario that I gleaned from his "Concept and creation" section:
 • "In the early stages...Mario was unable to jump"
 • "enabled Mario to jump"
 • "Mario was made into a carpenter"
 • "decided he should be a plumber"
 • "his large nose, draws on western influences"
 • "decided to 'put him in New York' and make him Italian"
 • "clothed the character in red overalls and a blue shirt to contrast against each other and the background"
 • "A red cap...to...avoid drawing the character's hairstyle, forehead, and eyebrows, as well as to circumvent the issue of animating his hair as he jumped"
 • "distinct features, prominently a large nose and a mustache, which avoided the need to draw a mouth and facial expressions"
 • "Mario's appearance has become more defined; blue eyes, white gloves, brown shoes, a red "M" in a white circle on the front of his hat and gold buttons on his overalls"
 • "colors of his shirt and overalls were also reversed from a blue shirt with red overalls to a red shirt with blue overalls"
These characteristics are primarily visual. A character can also be described in terms of behavior characteristics or temperament characteristics or strength characteristics or weakness characteristics or interpersonal relations or how a player controls the character in the game (i.e. command set)....
For Amaterasu, the "Characteristics" section should compare/contrast Amaterasu's characteristics in Ōkami and Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
2. Unfortunately, in the current "Amaterasu (Ōkami)#Appearances" section, I don't see a lot of characteristics.
Interestingly enough, the article "Ōkami#Characters" contains characteristics of Amaterasu that are not present in the "Amaterasu (Ōkami)" article (e.g. "red markings"). All of these characteristics should be moved from "Ōkami#Characters" to the new section "Amaterasu (Ōkami)#Characteristics".
In addition, the sole note in Amaterasu (Ōkami) about Amaterasu's gender should be removed as a note and placed into the new section "Amaterasu (Ōkami)#Characteristics".

Appearances

edit

Again according to "Wikipedia:WikiProject Fictional characters/Style guide":

"Appearances" can also be replaced with "Biography" or "Fictional history" if the subject has only appeared in a single book/game/etc.

The current "Amaterasu (Ōkami)#Appearances" section is primarily biography / fictional history.

However, Amaterasu has appeared in multiple games.

My Recomendation

edit

I would replace the current "Amaterasu (Ōkami)#Appearances" section with the following structure:

Characteristics

Fictional history

Appearances

Ōkami

Marvel vs. Capcom series

Amaterasu appears as a playable character in the fighting games Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.[3]

Fictional history
Should contain information from the first two paragraphs of the current "Amaterasu (Ōkami)#Appearances" section, but only information directly related to Amaterasu. Anything deleted could be considered for inclusion in "Ōkami#Story".
Appearances / Ōkami
Should contain information from the second two paragraphs of the current "Amaterasu (Ōkami)#Appearances" section, but pared way down. Look at "Mario#Appearances"–each game is described with only a few sentences (yes, there are many more Mario games, but the name of this section is "Appearances", not "Plots").

Two final, general recommendations:

 • Consult "Ōkami". It is a featured article.
 • Take a step back. Look at the character Amaterasu with much more objectivity.

What next?

edit

Obviously, I am suggesting a major rewrite of the "Appearances" section. Therefore, I will not give it a detailed copy edit.

Tomorrow, I will copy edit the "Reception" section.

--LukasMatt (talk) 16:48, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hm... I was only looking for a grammar/orthographic/syntactic review. I never played the game, and I'm not that familiar with it, so I have no intention to rewrite it completely. The "Appearances" just includes standard information in many vg characters (e.g GAs Cloud Strife, Tali'Zorah). There's no need to a subsection for MvC3 because there's few info. It would be nice to add more content, and if you can do so it'd great, but I'm not intend to go for it. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 02:36, 25 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Reception

edit
Suggestions for "Reception" section

The lead section informed readers that the article would discuss reception in the order "positive reception from both video game publications and fans...top Capcom characters, best canine characters in games, and greatest video game protagonists overall", so the "Reception" section has been organized accordingly.

1st paragraph (well received by critics and fans alike)

edit

Removed

Oposing her to the game cliché of "The Animal with Attitude", GamesRadar stated she "doesn't need 'attitude.' She has majesty, wisdom and grace instead."

Reasons:
 • The source does not include the quotation "doesn't need 'attitude.' She has majesty, wisdom and grace instead"
 • I don't understand "Oposing her to the game cliché of 'The Animal with Attitude'" The name 'The Animal with Attitude' does not appear in the GamesRadar source nor in the preceding IGN source.
 • [It's a pain to click to #49 in the list of top 100]

2nd paragraph (top Capcom characters)

edit

Removed

She also was chosen by Game Informer as one of the 20 Capcom characters they would like to see in a rumored crossover fighting game Namco Vs Capcom, his Namco side equivalent being Shadow from Dead to Rights.

Reasons:
 • The source is dated 2010. The rumored games never happened. In fact, they were still being discussed in 2013 (see [1]);
 • The game happened in 2005. See "Namco × Capcom". That will confuse readers.

Last paragraph (accolades)

edit

Deleted because the quote is not in the source

"most memorable, influential, and badass"

RE: Article notability

edit

@Kung Fu Man: I added some sources to the article, but in addition to that, the mention in 100 Greatest Video Game Characters is fairly major, going indepth on the character for several pages. I'm fairly sure the character is notable now, in spite of the trivial sources that are in the article. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 00:39, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Zxcvbnm: The problem with the book is that it often tends to focus more on giving a blow by blow of the game than any analysis of the character: yeah she's mentioned on three pages, but not much can be gleamed from it, even a preview shows that. I still feel it's a bit lacking, but I'm not going to force it through AfD or whatnot, maybe we just need to come back to it later with a fresh look.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 02:37, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
