Incorrect birth/christening citation

edit

Ambrose Cobbs was not born in 1595, the christening record cited for his birth is actually for his brother, who died shortly thereafter and was buried only days after his christening. This can be confirmed by looking at the Lyminge Parish Burial records. The fact that they have the same name is confusing but they are two different people, therefore I'll be removing this citation and changing his birth information to the generally accepted 1603. Coat of Arms?

edit

I think it's worth discussing the validity of the coat of arms added to this page. Contrary to popular belief, a crest/coat of arms is not attributed to everyone with the same family name, it is bestowed upon a specific individual (and most individuals did not have one) and their descendants only of the male line. The idea of a family crest for everyone with the same family name has been fabricated by companies selling products with personalized "coats of arms". There are many articles about the myth and misunderstanding regarding the crest/coat of arms, several of which are listed on Cyndi's List and it is mentioned here on Wikipedia in the article for Crest (heraldry). Apparently the Cobbs of Kent crest was given to John Cobbs in the 14th century and since we don't know much about the ancestry of Ambrose Cobbs beyond his parentage, there is no way to know if he is descended from this John Cobbs. Therefore, I believe the coat of arms on this page should be removed. Robin (talk) 23:11, 27 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
