Artist

edit

We need the name of the artist. I need to add it. OK

Please don't. We have already decided not to add it. The reason is that too many people fight over who the original artist is, it is an entirely pointless argument as far as American Idol goes. You only give the name of the artist when it is relevant, for example on certain theme week where the name of the artist is important, otherwise it should not be added. Hzh (talk) 15:38, 20 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Can't we just put it on, and save the debate for when we need it????? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.125.52.229 (talk) 01:14, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
The point about not having the original artist is precisely to avoid unnecessary debate on something completely irrelevant to American Idol. We don't need to argue about whether the Heart's song "Alone" was by originally by i-TEN, it has nothing to do with the show. Hzh (talk) 02:40, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

To the original poster, you really should sign your posts. If you don't know how, you can by simply using the ~ key 4 times in a row at the end of your posts. Its the tilde symbol, and on most standard keyboards, its right below the Esc key. Aidensdaddy2k9 (talk) 18:14, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Please give source for date of birth

edit

People who give date of birth for contestant please give s source for their information. There are people who like to put false information on wikipedia, for example here which appears to be made up by checking a few known sources. Without sources it can be difficult to determine if any specific piece of information is accurate or not. Although in past season they did give date of birth for Top 10/12/13 finalists, but they don't for those who are not finalists, so don't put down any birthday date without a source for those whose birthday was not mentioned on the show. The information gets pass around the internet because many websites use wikipedia as a source, so please make sure they are correct. There are also no sources for the dates of birth for semifinalists for some past seasons, and I am considering deleting those because it is hard to know if they are made up or not. Hzh (talk) 23:13, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I added their approximate birth years based on their ages and the fact that it's still early in the year and most of them probably haven't had their birthdays in 2014 yet. I included the abbreviation for "circa" to account for the fact that their birthday could fall in January or early February of the following year, such is the case of Emily Piriz. This will have to do until we get confirmation of their full birth dates. Most seasons have a "songs from the year they were born" theme where their birth date is mentioned in the video intro, though some of them will be eliminated before then. MarkMc1990 (talk) 08:21, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I will be deleting birthday dates if they are not sourced. The birthday dates given have already spread to other websites, if they are wrong, then wiki is responsible for spreading false biographical information. The same is true for individual contestant's wiki page. I will also be deleting the semifinalists' birthday date of past years if no sources are forthcoming. Hzh (talk) 13:21, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I support removing birthdates as well. If the show publishes their age, which they often do, don't know about always, then fine but source it with a link so others can verify. The same is true for past seasons. A statement like "In a March 2010 airing of American Idol, Janey Singer's age was reported as 18," with a link to that reporting is attributed and understandable. Sportfan5000 (talk) 17:53, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

General dates have all been sourced, if reliable sources are found giving the exact dates, they would be welcome. Sportfan5000 (talk) 02:53, 10 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

effort underway to delete all finalists' pages

edit

FYI, worth checking out. Sportfan5000 (talk) 00:40, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

In the past I have defended against deletion, but really, people creating these pages should make an effort to do a proper job. Aside from the issue of notability, pages without proper citations and containing information that is unverifiable is asking for trouble (and I'm really tired of people rehashing unsourced information from fans' forum and stating them as facts on wiki pages). Hzh (talk) 01:02, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
That's a problem on all articles but I agree that ideally, they would make a good faith effort to source all content. I have now gone through all the series for the current year and added sources if none existed. Sportfan5000 (talk) 02:35, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Top 13's Numbers

edit
With the season's finalists having just a static number for the whole season, do you think it is a good idea to add it on the finalists' data/results table beside the finalist? Zjzr (talk) 12:29, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think you mean their assigned phone numbers? If so, definitely not. We have the link to the website, which should suffice. I think anyone looking for how to participate will figure it out. Also if we do it for this show, why not every contestant show? It would never end. Sportfan5000 (talk) 12:36, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
It is just that unlike other seasons, this season has a static number that doesn't change, and it would make it easier for people to see the numbers without directly going to the website (as it is still encyclopedic data based on their "ID" for the season). Zjzr (talk) 04:43, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't see it happening. If consensus is to add the phone numbers then there you go. @Hzh: has been shepherding this article so may have more insight one way or another. Sportfan5000 (talk) 01:44, 20 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think it is generally not a good idea to add something which is of use only temporarily. After the show is over, the telephone number would no longer be relevant, and would just be trivia of no significance. If you add that, people might also want to add links for other ways of voting, as you said, where would it end? We can however mention that the numbers for the contestants are now fixed for the duration of the show, unlike previous seasons. Hzh (talk) 11:01, 20 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think mentioning that they are newly static numbers this year seems like a good idea, as well as the five ways of voting, in some way. Sportfan5000 (talk) 11:07, 20 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

New voting in Season 13

edit

The Article herein mentions new voting via Facebook and Google Search but does not explain how that is done. I wondered and so followed the links provided in the Article here, to find out: "“Google Voting” will pop up on the Google search page whenever fans search Idol-related terms, allowing them to place up to 50 votes with the click of a mouse — prior to the voting period ending at 10am PT on Thursdays. (Check out the sample screengrab below to see the format/layout of the Google Voting interface.)" — I guess that is enough for others to also follow that path, if they really want to know. What does Facebook do to facilitate voting? — Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 18:48, 5 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

You might try the Facebook page for American Idol here.Hzh (talk) 07:24, 6 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Looks like that will work. Interesting photo-portraits of each, with fading for those 'eliminated'. — Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 21:26, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Controversy

edit

Will people please stop putting fans getting upset over elimination down as a controversy? It happens every year, and they are not controversial. Controversy requires that something be actually controversial and something widely reported in reliable news sites. Jessica Sanchez said she didn't watch the show much then complained about Malaya's elimination (she appeared only to have heard that Malaya was doing "awesome"), putting her "opinion" in this page is just inviting mockery. And JLo looked upset every week at eliminated contestant, how is that controversial? Fans getting upset is not controversial, and every week there are upset fans. Top 6 Results - Early Entry?!

edit

What happened with the results today? I know that this is a public site and that entries can be entered or edited at any given time by generally anybody. But this afternoon, I looked up the results for the top 6, which airs this week of April 23rd and 24th. (And I did so only to look up the names of one of the songs performed, not expecting to see early results.) And at that time, it had already listed who was eliminated when the show has not even aired yet. Though I am not sure if it airs over in other countries at some point, but they do not record the show live in Hollywood California until around 6pm Pacific Daylight Time. And the results that I saw, showed Alex Preston being in the bottom 2, and CJ Harris being eliminated, and they were posted at about 11 AM Pacific Time. Who posted these results early? I mentioned the posted results on American Idol's Facebook page, and moments later, they were changed. Whoever posted them early, whether you did it out of opinion, by guessing, or somehow had this information early, (though I cannot see how you could) you were wrong in doing so. Just sayin. Aidensdaddy2k9 (talk) 18:50, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Just remove them if you see them. It's only people guessing who might be eliminated because many Idol fan sites are predicting CJ's elimination, but it is still a guess. Hzh (talk) 23:06, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. That's kind of what I thought. As far as editing is concerned, I can edit standard text, lines, or paragraphs on the articles. But if its within a table, such as the ones that list when they're eliminated, and the table graph showing the results per each week, I will leave that to the pros on this site. I haven't mastered fixing those yet. Aidensdaddy2k9 (talk) 00:43, 25 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

There were no performances on top 4 results night. 216.11.6.192 (talk) 13:40, 9 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

It's on Top 3 next week, not Top 4. It's been corrected, Hzh (talk) 16:45, 9 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made.-BZTMPS · (talk? contribs?) 18:33, 9 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

DVR rating

What are the sources for the DVR ratings? The table needs to be filled out — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.202.211.118 (talk) 20:41, 18 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ratings

edit

In the Ratings section, there is a long list of CS1 errors in the references in the table. Can somebody fix those errors? Paul Badillo (talk) 00:06, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Controversy

edit

I would ask anyone who want to add content to the controversy section please understand what controversy means. You need good coverage of the issue concerned, and the issue needs to have controversial elements that provoke strong (usually negative) reactions in the viewing public or in the media.
