editDavid Kushner's book, Masters of Doom, describe's American's role in the original DOOM as only doing technical support for iD. He didn't work on design until DOOM II. Is this right?
name
editis american mcgee his real name? BUF4Life 07:59, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes. --Chaosfeary 11:10, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- You know he says his mom named him American because someone in college with her named their kid America. It's probably a coincidence but Abbie Hoffman had actually named his kid america. It would be interesting if it turned out that the moms knew each other or something. Of course it is complete speculation especially since there are a lot of names like that from the era. Oz vs Wicked
editHe'll have a hard time writing a prequel to The Wizard of Oz (especially with the speculation about a storyline based on a pre-Dorothy Oz and the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba (Witch of the West), especially after the book and hit musical Wicked deal with those exact subjects. TR_Wolf yes it is, didnt you read?
Age??

Neutrality disputed?
editWhy? The articles contains only factual information. I guess someone who doesn't like his games slapped that tag on the article? Technitai 11:51, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
I want to see American McGee's photo!
Autobiography?
editI find it curious that much of this page reads like a professional biography/resume, and more curious still that the "About" link on American McGee's own blog page redirects to this Wiki article. PacificBoy 15:40, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Updating page
editI'm in the process of trying to update this Wiki page for American. He asked that I replace the photo with one of the promotional images he keeps around for just such an occasion, and to update his information to be a little more current. Thanks so much for your support!

This article doesn't belong to him, neither does it belong to you. Did he ask you to remove the quotes from a reliable source? About the "inspiration for the macabre tone" of the game. Because he gave that interview himself to Wired. Maybe you should ask them to remove the interview first. You've no right to go around appointing yourself the person in charge of this article. Your last three edits have been to remove that paragraph. The first time with the misleading "Personal clarification", secondly with "Removed inappropriate content. Again.", and thirdly "Modified at subject's request". 109.176.217.238 (talk) 09:52, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
Furthermore, even though you claim to be acting "at the subject's request", you could just be some randomer who's never spoken to him in your life. 109.176.217.238 (talk) 09:55, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
Also noticed that 4 IPs have removed this paragraph, one twice with over 2 years apart[1], also editing the page on Spicy Horse (McGee's company). It would be good if some established editors could watch this page for any more page blanking. 109.176.217.238 (talk) 10:18, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
Oz - Arthur?
editWho or what is Arthur?--Cyberman TM (talk) 11:46, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
Temporary (or not) name created for the lead character in the Oz adaptation. Arthur was chosen because the character arc in the Oz adaptation was inspired by the King Arthur tale (Sword in the Stone, reluctant hero, the heroes journey archetype, etc). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.78.46.166 (talk) 00:51, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
"Works"
editDoes being a tester qualify it as a work of that person? Having a non-creative role in development should not qualify it as a work, since works are by definition creative. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.57.136.245 (talk) 06:33, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Fired from id?
editIn the id software page it says he was fired. Here it says he "moved". I'd like to know more... 93.97.48.217 (talk) 00:49, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
Why "American McGee's Alice" and not just plain old Alice?
editThe article doesn't address how this guy managed to get so famous that his name was included in the titles of the games he designed.
For example, the Sid Meier article makes it pretty clear why Civilization is called Sid Meier's Civilization, yet this article goes straight from the start of American's career (doing grunt type work at id Software) to American McGee's Alice being released by a major publisher. What exactly happened here? The article does not tell the full story.
By way of comparison, it's as if the Gordon Ramsay article went from him working in a part time job at McDonalds to him having his own TV show.
Or, was there such a bitter rivalry between EA and id that "American McGee's Alice" was presented as a massive corporate "fuck you" to id, despite the name American McGee meaning nothing to 99.9999% of gamers (then or now)? 86.184.217.252 (talk) 22:20, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
It was for copyright reasons. Using a character in the public domain means that the company needed to make it clear that this game is a new Alice, with new Intellectual Property.. so they needed a strong name to distinguish the IP. His was weird enough to be slapped on a weird game. And it stuck. Watch American_McGee_Interview_Spicy_Horse on YT
Father
editThe "Early Life" section says he never knew his father, while further down he's quoted in an interview as describing meeting and being attacked by his father. I'm going to remove the "never knew" part but if someone cares to elaborate please go ahead. --Polm23 (talk) 04:56, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
BLP violation
editI've removed potentially contentious/defamatory material regarding John Romero and American McGee from this article. More specifically:
- "He was later promoted to level designer after John Romero had been skipping work and no other level designers were available at the time."
- "In 1998, he was let go from id by Carmack for having served his purpose and having now gone the route of Romero."
While it's well-established that the work environment at id Software in the 1990s was volatile, unsourced/poorly-sourced contentious material about living persons cannot exist on Wikipedia. If you wish to re-add these lines in some form, please provide citations which substantiate the information given. FlotillaFlotsam (talk) 02:51, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
