Victoria Cross and British Army commission claim
editI have deleted the claim that Private Aníbal Augusto Milhais was awarded the British Victoria Cross and was commissioned into the British Army. None of the references to the article support either claim. His name does not appear in official list of Victoria Cross recipients produced by the British War Office or in any of the many Victoria Cross reference works. Perhaps he may have received one of the two Distinguished Conduct Medals (DCM) or one of the 76 Military Medals (MM) awarded to Portuguese troops in the First World War. Answer: Victoria Cross and British Army commission claim
editNow that I was told that Aníbal Augusto Milhais's name does not appear in the official list of the Victoria Cross recipients produced by the British War Office, I am not 100% sure that he received such distinction; nonetheless, I am pretty sure he did so following his actions in the Battle of La Lys (9th of April 1918). I will keep searching for more information here in Portugal. However, if the information I got proves to be wrong, I apologize for any inconvinient I might have caused to the veracity of this article. For now, the only provable distinctions I've got are the Order of the Tower and Sword (Portugal) and the 1st Class War Cross (Belgium). PR.PT (talk) 22:09, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- In the First World War, allied countries awarded many decorations to other allied countries. The Victoria Cross is never awarded to individual foreign soldiers but many foreign soldiers were awarded other British gallantry awards. These records may still be held by the British National Archives but probably would also be held in Portuguese records. Anthony Staunton (talk) 00:42, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
- @PR.PT: You might want to question that source, the Belgian War Cross, or Croix de Guerre, doesn't appear to come in different classes from what I can find. Cheers, Gecko G (talk) 02:04, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
