"Plot hole" deletion, abridged translation issue
editThe "plot hole" section was trivial and based on a deeply abridged version of Jules Verne's novel, and I propose it be deleted. In an article that is in such need of repair in other respects, its inclusion seems pointless. The translation entitled "An Antarctic Mystery" is here presented as interchangeable with Verne's original French text, which is nonsense- Mrs. Cashel Hoey's 1898 translation cuts over a third of the French text, reducing a 122,000 word novel to 79,459 words. The first full and complete English translation, titled The Sphinx of the Ice Realm translated and edited by Frederick Paul Walter, has just been published this month by State University of New York Press. Verne has in general been subject to outrageous silent cuts and abridgments- as Walter notes, virtually all standard English translations of Verne novels are bowdlerized and heavily edited.184.175.17.53 (talk) 20:23, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
- I introduced the "Plot Hole" section (perhaps better to name it "Continuity" or such.) Though I don't really see how it would be OR (you could call the whole plot summary OR...), my heart's not into it: If you feel it's inappropriate, delete it. (OTOH, even if bowdlerized, I think JV would have had a hard time to explain the resurfacing of Tiger...) --Syzygy (talk) 08:05, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
