I’m assuming this edit refers back to this edit @ Eine kleine Nachtmusik.

We have an odd result here: the work that is played by strings alone (the Mozart) is not categorised as such, but the work that includes a part for timpani (the Sibelius) is categorised as for “string orchestra”. That term, to me, denotes nothing but strings; add any other instrument into the mix and you no longer have a “string orchestra”.

Eh, well the timpani part is technically optional, but you do have a point. In Mozart's case, as I said, it's not written as such, even though no changes have to be made to play it with doubled strings, so it seems to me to be inappropriate there, but Sibelius DID designate Andante Festivo to be for string orchestra, was the main point. ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ (talk) 05:07, 13 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Sibelius is originally for string quartet, later adapted by Sibelius for string orchestra, with an additional double bass part. The timpani appear only in the orchestral version, and only in the last four bars. The part is marked ad lib. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.75.182.1 (talk) 09:04, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

The article refers to a recording of the Sibelius performance of this piece issued by the "Columbia Gramophone Company". I think if the contributor examines the original disc they will find the label identifies the issuer as the Columbia GRAPHOPHONE (sic) Company. At the time of its formation "Gramophone" was a trade name, and jealously guarded as such. Delahays (talk) 15:45, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
