Vijayanagar

Someone has cut and pasted large amount of material on Vijayanagar history. It needs drastic pruning and editing.

Lethargy and indifference of Telugu historians

It is sad to see that Telugu history being distorted by others who are interested to paint Telugu history as that of Tamils (E.g., Vengi) or Kannadigas (Rashtrakuta and Vijayanagar). For instance, the evidences in favour of Telugu origin of Vijayanagar Empire were downplayed and enormous material (authentic or otherwise) was included to show that Telugus had no contribution. It is common knowledge that Telugu literature had a heyday during the time of Krishnadevarayan who himself was a great Telugu poet. It was totally ignored by one Kannada parochial historian, Dinesh Kannambadi, who has been playing havoc with history and is attempting to show that South Indian history is Karnataka history.Telugu historians must wake up from slumber, take interest in Wikipedia and restore the true picture.

balls to your knoweldge.more than 60% of records, inscriptions during vijayanagar kingdom is maintaining in kannada & the rest in sanskrit, prakrit & telugu. It is also very well known fact that vijayanagr kingdom has roots in karnataka & kannadigas. Also telugu was the personal preference of Sri krishnadevaraya (who btw is tuluva kannadiga & not a telugite) & during his days telugu saw the beginning of their literature. So instead of being thankful to kannadigas u r trying putting some bullshit. REPLY: Balls to your knowledge too, vijayanagara empire was established by Harihara and Bukka, both from warangal..Krishnadevaraya might be Tulu but the Kingdom itself was established by the Telugus. As to why there are more incriptions in Kannada, because the locals spoke kannada so the inscriptions are in kannada. But the proceedings in the court house are in telugu, the mother tongue of the early rulers. The empire itslef was a good mixture of Telugu and Kannada culture.' You nerd tell me how many places of historical or ancient significance is in Andhra compared to tamilnadu or karnataka despite being such a big state in the south. Also Kannada inscriptions are the highest in the country than any other language & that tells the most of the story. REPLY: There are as many as in Karnataka or TN, all you have to do is drop your karnataka history book and read a little bit of Andhra history. Sri Krishnadeva Raya, a Kannadiga, proclaimed 'Desa Bhashalandu Telugu lessa', which literally means 'Of all the Indian languages, Telugu is the Sweetest'. So there we have it: a Kannadiga (!) liked Telugu. So what? I like certain langauges too; that says nothing about my origins, or about the historical importance of the people who spoke those fine languages. And by the way: where was Vijayanagara? Answer: near Hampi, in Karnataka... —Precedingunsigned comment added by 93.134.187.233 (talk) 15:50, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Reply

The above account reflects Kannada culture, let alone the veracity of the material put in by this guy. I suspect Dinesh Kannambadi, the Kannada fanatic who has been spreding falsehoods in wikipedia, must have done this.

Wake up Telugu Historians. Now, Andhra Satavahanas are being branded Tamils. Protect your history from being corrupted by others!!

Please note that this article is not maintained or supported by "Telugu Historians". You can always rectiy the mistakes if you know the facts (with proper citation).
Please be more specific regarding the location of factual inaccuracies. You can mark them with "[citation needed]" if you feel it needs to verified. Sumanthk 11:11, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Quality issues

The article definitely deserves it "B-class" status. It is poorly organized and the quality of English at some places is poor. Where are the Telugu scholars and PhDs? Maybe someone should ask professors from Government universities to contribute to wikipedia - they do have a lot of time on their hands. Unfortunately, I do not have enough knowledge in this area to edit what has been written. I have removed some (rather poorly written) sections which contained redundant information (on Telugu for example-there is a page for the language and related issues).

The current situation

"In 2009 it was announced that the 10 districts of the former Hyderabad State will be reestablished as a new state, Telengana, which will include the capital of Hyderabad. The new capital of Andhra Pradesh has not been announced."

Additions such as this should not be made since this is highly controversial. The majority of congress does NOT favor this separation. There are numerous international business in the area and there is a vested interest to keep the state intact. Please be mindful that hundreds of thousands of people will be looking at this page and misleading and presumptuous statements such as these should not be made. —Precedingunsigned comment added by AtleyJackson (talkcontribs) 12:34, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

NPOV issues

This article is sickeningly biased. In the "Economy" section, it says:

"With a dynamic leadership, the state is steering the nation to new dimensions in the fields of Information Technology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, Business Management, Construction, etc., to emerge as a land of immense business opportunities."

Contrast this with the following, written in a recent Guardian article:

"During the hungry season, hundreds of thousands of people in Andhra Pradesh are now kept alive on gruel supplied by charities. Last year, hundreds of children died in an encephalitis outbreak because of the shortage of state-run hospitals. The state government's own figures suggest that 77% of the population have fallen below the poverty line. The measurement criteria are not consistent, but this appears to be a massive rise. In 1993 there was one bus a week taking migrant workers from a depot in Andhra Pradesh to Mumbai. Today there are 34. The dispossessed must reduce themselves to the transplanted coolies of Blair's new empire."[1]

I did some work on this article a while back, and I can see that all my contributions have been removed without discussion, so I'm not going to try again. Palefire 23:58, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

The cuisine of Andhra Pradesh is reputedly the spiciest and the most delicious of all Indian cuisine.

Anon contrib

Anon 70.33.98.171 (talk · contribs) added that

An important village contributing to major rice export is Gumpalagudem.

I'm not from Andhra Pradesh at all, but Google really do not show any hits at all about that. So, can anyone else, especially people from Andhra Pradesh verify this statement? Thanks. --Ragib 02:52, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

I'm not from Andhra, but being from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, I'm sure there is a vast region in Andhra under rice cultivation and no single village can be notable in that respect. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:06, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

Ok, Anon 70.33.98.171 (talk · contribs) is adding more claims to the village, would you please provide references to support the claim? I'm hopelessly unable to find that by Googling or otherwise. Thanks. --Ragib 05:35, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

I am from Andhra Pradesh and I am a beuracrat on Telugu wiki and contributed to several district pages.I have never heard of Gumpalagudem anywhere. Must be a very remote village.
It being major rice exporter is totally unrealistic fact. Generally coastal districts of the state especially East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna are considered to be the major contributors to Andhra's rice production.--Vyzasatya 15:04, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

New Telangana secessionism

  • This need to be dealt in a seperate article. It violates NPOV (highly opinionated) and also states irrelevant material in the subheading "NTR and Heavy diversion of state reserves to Telugu Film industry". This is a controversial issue and heavily opinionated. --Vyzasatya 15:10, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
Moved this subsection and some realated material into new article Andhra Pradesh Politics. But it still has NPOV issues --Vyzasatya 15:22, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

Ranga Reddy

@ 131.225.82.117

sorry about rangareddi v. ranga reddy. perhaps someone should look into changing the map that says "rangareddi", just so we have consistency between the list of districts and the accompanying map. Vvuppala

Muslim invaders

"Hyderabadi cuisine, influenced by the Muslim invaders from the North West of India centuries ago,"

I think as grown men and women, we can afford to get over the fact that Muslims came to Andhra by invasion, agreed? How they got to Andhra is especially irrelevant when it comes to their cuisine.

Vvuppala 04:30, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Agree, though sometimes I wonder if we are too much into consensus-building mode; it may probably be best to edit this page without much ado as most of the contribs (in terms of quantity, not necessarily quality) come from anon IPs who hardly look at the talk page. --Gurubrahma 06:14, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
Disagree. It's an interesting fact. Just because something's unpleasant doesn't automatically make it unencyclopedic.

Pygmypony (talk) 05:40, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

If it's an important fact, it should have it's own page. The subtle reference when talking about cuisine is irrelevant. Davo499 (talk) 05:24, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Andhra name from maharashtra??

Andra name derived from the sanskrit of belongs to aryans but telugu language is borned and generated in dravidian region —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.235.54.179 (talk) 09:27, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

hi 210.211.136.93, wrote Andra pradesh derived its name from a maharathi dynasty 'Satavahans/Andras'.This dynasty orginated from 'Andra Maval' region of western Maharashtra.Hence they were called as 'Andras'.Subsequently Andra Pradesh got its name from this dynasty.

  • This is a unique theory never heard before about Andhra history. Would like to know more about it. Please provide references to cite the above. whose view point is this coming? obviously it is not a popular mainstream idea.
  • It is known beyond doubt that satavahanas are Andhras not Maharashtrians though they ruled considerable part of western maharashtra along with Andhra. --Vyzasatya 07:44, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
I found that Origin of Satavahanas is not clear whether they are from Andhra Pradesh or Maharashtra. Partly the above claim of Satavahanas being maharathi dynasty is not true. Rest could be true that Satavahanas are called Andhras because they ruled Andra Maval region. Anyways made changes in article to reflect a more NPOV.--Vyzasatya 08:04, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
That's probably the best route to take. I've never heard of that perspective on the derivation of Andhra before.Vvuppala 00:35, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Name of Andhras exist even at the time of writing Puranas. See Andhra Kingdom about verses. The orissa goverment page mentions that Andrha desa name came from Odra desa. See http://orissagov.nic.in/morestate.htm. But it also mentions about Akarakhand (Andhra Malwa), sounds similar to Maval. Mlpkr 17:40, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Andhra Economy

I have restored the portion of this section that refers to recent progress in various fields, (IT, Biotech, Pharmaceuticals, etc). Each of the items currently links to general articles about the subjects. However, I think that the only way that those items should remain in the article is if there are sections talking about IT in Andhra, Biotech in Andhra, etc. Just listing technologies that exist somewhere in Andhra is of little use. Vvuppala 00:35, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Andhra History

I've segmented the Andhra History section as per the convention followed in the Tamil Naduarticle.

The result is several new sub-sections, all of which need attention. A state of more than 50 million people, and of unquestionable antiquity should not have so small a section about its past.

Some major parts of the state's history are articles unto themselves: the various dynasties that ruled over portions of the state, and the major cities all have their own articles. We need to integrate information about these parts of state history without rewriting the whole articles again.

Vvuppala 07:30, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Could somebody please correct the date for the formation of the state of Andhra. The date noted is October 19, 1952... before Sriramulu's death! I am removing the specific date until this is corrected.

Aonyx 06:01, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

I found the following thrash in the history section and removed it:

"It is said that the people of Andhra Pradesh are really of the Aryan race, not the Dravidian race. Many historians believe that[citation needed]the people of Andhra Pradesh are actually Aryans who lived in norhthern india (Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, etc. part of India and moved to Central and Southern India. Sanskrit writings from the 7th century (B.C.) show proof and drscribe the people of Andhra Pradesh as Aryans. The language Telugu is said to be a Dravidian language but there is also proof that Telugu is an Indo-Aryan Language, not a Dravidian language. The languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Oriya, Bengali, etc, mostly come from Sanskrit. Telugu and Sanskrit relate in many ways, so that with a Sanskrit dictionary one can speak most of Telugu. The languages of Telugu and Hindi also relate in many ways. There are many words in these two languages which relate (ex, Dharm/Dharmam, Karan/Karanam, Desh/Desham, Rashtra/Rashtram, etc)."
There is no singe piece of citation given for this. I dont know which dumbass have written it. The people who speaks the dravidian langugaes are purelly dravidians and being a dravidian is not sin. Grow up buddy!. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Darwinahindu(talkcontribs) 22:31, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Dance

Why is the number of movie theaters under the section Dance? I edited it out yesterday and addedd Andhra natyam, only to find that it has been removed. Maybe a separate section of Tollywood is needed.

Hm, strange. I don't know why it was edited out. The information looks legit. I'll let Gurubrahma a chance to respond, and will revert tomorrow if it doesn't clear up. Vvuppala 11:08, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
My apologies, at first glance it wasn't clear as to what exactly was added. I've already responded on the user'stalkpage, asking him to feel free to add back the information with references - also, it did not appear legit as he edited out the bit abt the movies. He shd have probly moved it to a separate sub-section. btw, "Andhra Natyam" scores only 218 hits on google and is not as famous as, say Kuchipudi (83,000 hits). Hence, I felt that mention of "Andhra Natyam" may not be encyclopedic. --Gurubrahma 13:14, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps you typed something in wrong. I searched for Andhra Natyam, and got 12,500 hits. Apparently, Andhra Natyam is a historical dance, one that has been resurrected by dance enthusiasts after it nearly disappeared- explaining why Kuchipudi is more famous. Thus, I'm restoring the edit. Vvuppala 14:08, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Varun, indeed I must've searched for something wrong. Actually, the search must be done for "Andhra Natyam" (that is, with quotes) and it gives 8,800 hits. Without quotes, it is 12,500 hits. Thanks again.--Gurubrahma 05:27, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

I just changed the description of dosas from pancake-lik to crepe-like. A matter of thickness I suppose.

Interesting Facts section

I was wondering if it would be appropriate to add an interesting facts section to the page. For example, in Srikakulam district (primarily) there is this odd way of smoking cigars with the lit end inside one's mouth (referred to as adda-poka). I am sure there are many more such interesting things/facts about Andhra Pradesh.

Yeah sure, you can add a trivia section, as long as it conforms to WP:V. btw, I'd believe that the cigar is more of a beedi and the proper english name would be cheroot - also, AFIK, it is smoked in that way in large parts of AP by the working class women, though it has reduced in the last 10-15 years. Please sign your posts with ~~~~. Thanks, --Gurubrahma 06:33, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

revert multiple edits by 131.225.82.45 - Factual inaccuracies & POV

I have reverted these edits because of several factual distortions. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, not Bezwada Gopal Reddy. Bezwada was the second chief minister of Andhra (that is, the state without Telangana), after Tanguturi Prakasam. Indira Gandhi contested from Medak in 1980, not 1982; no record to show that NTR supported her. Chandrababu Naidu joined TDP only after it came to power. Also, the edits had a lot of POV and a bit of personal attacks. Hence, I have reverted the same. --Gurubrahma 05:04, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

I have seen that a lot of edits are being made adding Wowtelugu.com to the lead section. This should be avoided as the correct place for such links is the "External links" section. i added wowtelugu.com and fullastrology.com bcz they are providing interest information including telugu cinema gossipos by wowtelugu.com and cultural based information which is most important for telugu people throughout world. Even the state Govt of Andhra Pradesh starts its day on ugadi with panchangam. similarly most of the information in the www.fullastrology.com is free of cost and useful to the people of world in general and telugu people of andhra pradesh in particular. the predictions given by sri nookala suryanarayana about hard ware importance in andhra pradesh and in India came true in last year telugu panchangam and it is proudly placed in the talk of today of the thatstelugu.com , a popular telugu portal. hence it is justified the link , i need ur feedback in the matter with regards v pavan kumar MS—The preceding unsigned comment was added by202.65.150.198 (talkcontribs).

Hello V Pavan Kumar. We understand that you added these links in the article in good faith. However, we feel that these links shouldn't find a place here. The reason being that Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia and not a gossip magazine. For details, see WP:NOT to know what Wikipedia is not. Hence, as a policy, we discourage links to commercial websites unless the website is directly relevant to the topic being discussed and will help the encyclopedia reader in understanding the topic better and in reliable manner. The trouble with commercial websites is often with respect to reliability and self-promotion. Note that the issue whether they provide interesting information is also your point of view. The govt. of Andhra Pradesh starts its day on ugadi with panchangam, so this specific information can be added (in not more than a single sentence) in the govt. of Andhra Pradesh's article while discussing it under religious influence on govt's functioning. But however, this does not mean that we add links to all sites that provide panchangam. If the site in question is THE ONLY SITE to provide panchangam, then its notable; else its not and should not be mentioned. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 11:21, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

YSR

Added YSR's middle name. Since the chief minister is commonly known as "YSR" added what the S stood for (Sandinti) for those unfamiliar with Andhra Pradesh and its politics. -- Brown cp 23:09, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

What value does it add? Mlpkr 17:43, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

"Andhra" versus "Andhra Pradesh"

There are several instances where the state is referred to simply as “Andhra”. Since the term “Andhra” is sometimes also used in reference to the coastal region. I think it would be best to use the term “Andhra Pradesh” when the referring to the state. -- Brown cp 23:09, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Between 1953 and 1956 there used to be a state called "Andhra State" which was merged with Telangana(Telugu speaking districts of Hyderabad state) in 1956 to become "Andhra Pradesh" state. So Tanguturi Prakasham Pantulu is first Chief Minister of Andhra State and Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy is first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh State.

And Mainly Andra is derived from sanskrit belongs to aryans which are came from north india but telugu language is borned in dravidian region which means south india which belongs to telangana region —Preceding unsigned comment added by119.235.54.179 (talk) 09:32, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Synonyms

Andhra and Telangana are synonyms. Andhra is Sanskrit word and Telangana is Telugu word for Telugu country. Even the coastal region is part of Telangana although popular usage does not confirm to this fact. E.g., 1. Andhra Satavahanas who ruled the major part of Souhth India for 500 years covered the whole of present day Telugu speaking region. 2. When Musunuri Prolaneedu recaptured Warangal from Delhi sultanate and united the whole Telugu country he proclaimed himself "Andhradesaadheeswara" and "Andhrasuratraana". It is unfortunate that Telugu people got mentally alienated from each other by various historical and economic reasons.

Ordering of Culture sections

Currently the section “State Symbols” (state tree, state sport) precedes sections on Literature, Music, Dance and Movies. Are “State Symbols” really that important? Can they be relegated to the bottom of the list? Or perhaps be included in a trivia section?

Also the Movies section precedes Literature, Music and Dance. We know telugu people love their movies but shouldn’t Literature and Music precede Movies? -- Brown cp 23:09, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Ordering of Regions, Cities & Districts

Currently the order is regions, cities and then districts. The order has been changed to Regions, districts to cities.

The description of the regions did not correspond to the order of the descriptions. The regions were listed in the following order Coastal Andhra, Telangana and then Rayalaseema. But the descriptions were in the following order Telangana, Coastal Andhra and then Rayalseema. This has been fixed the order of listing (according to population size) now corresponds to the order of the description.

The order of the cities needs to be cleaned up. The cities are not ordered according to size. Does anyone know of a source that shows the relative size of Andhra Pradesh cities? -- Brown cp 00:43, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

You can find a list here [2].This source is used in many wikipedia articles. Please rearrange the cities based on this source. Sumanthk 06:31, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the source. Instead of including all cities, I think it would be reasonable to cut of the list at six. --Brown cp 21:18, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Telugu Language

As pointed out by a poster above there is far too detailed a description of the Telugu language. The place best suited for this information is the Telugu Language article. Incidentally there is far too much padding in this article. -- Brown cp 00:52, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Number of languages listed in the languages section

It would be best to not include the languages spoken by less than 2% of the people, because it statistically insignificant, at least not in a article that deals with AP as a whole. -- Brown cp 21:42, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Description of Hyderabad & Visakhapatanam

I have taken the description of these two cities that currently exists in the "Urban Centers of Economic Importance and incorporated them with city descriptions. It seems redundant to describe the cities twice. -- Brown cp 22:17, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Deleted Revenues Of AP Govt

The revenue stats listed are irrelevant. And they only list stats for 2000 and 2005. And they serve no useful purpose for readers who want an overview of AP.

Does anyone know the enrollment numbers for the universities in AP

Currently there are 23 universities listed. This listing merely consisting of the names of the universities is not really informative to a reader looking for an overview of AP. The list has to be pruned, based on size, history, repuation and etc. Until then I have deleted the listing all together. It would be better to include information on Eductation in general in AP as opposed to merely listing the universities.

Agree, Lot of those universties are not at all well known. Just mentioning something about popular universities "Osmania, Andhra and Sri Venkateswara" here and keeping list of all universties in AndhraPradesh in separate article is fine. The government of A.P. has divided the state into three divisions. Seehttp://www.hindu.com/2006/06/13/stories/2006061319760500.htm for example. That was the case when I studied. I think state government has recognised Kakatiya as the fourth division recently. All other universties are not significant.Mlpkr 17:10, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Madras and Andhra

I believe that the current form is a POV, when it concerns Madras. The article says that historically and culturally Madras always belonged to Andhra Pradesh. However, the famous historical symbols like Parthasarathy Temple andKapaleeswarar Temple along with many other temples are all Tamil. Throughout ancient history the Madras region was in Tamil provinces of Pallava rule, and the greatest Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar hailed from this place. So, kindly modify the paragraph concerning Madras in the Creation of Andra Pradesh. Balajiviswanathan 00:23, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

I am from Nellore, A.P. which is very near to Madras. Many old people in our area know the matter that Tirupati (where Tamil speaking people are more) is given in return for Madras(where telugu speaking people are more) in those days. They also recalled that Madras governor was against giving even separate state, so Potti Sriramulu from Nellore went on hunger strike and sacrificing life. It is true, but personally I am okay with removing it not to hurt sentiments like yours. Shall we? In regard to your other comment about Pallava's, just not Madras, but lot of the coastal Andhra was under Pallavas, cholas etc. It is no doubt that Tamil was older than Telugu, but the demographics must have been changed later. Mlpkr 16:59, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
The word 'Chennai' has Telugu origins, and comes from the word 'Chennapatnam'. Damarla Venkatappa Nayak was a Telugu chieftain ruling over the Madras-Pulicat area in the 16th century, and he named the city (then village) after his father Damarla Chennappa Nayak. Most of present day Tamil Nadu was under the Telugu Nayakas. —Preceding unsigned comment added by64.71.2.99 (talk) 07:41, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Ofcourse, Nayakas ruled major portion. But, it wasn't major portion of Tamil Nadu. It was Madras presidency, which included many many areas of present Andhra too. How do you say that Chennai was part of Andhra as there was no Andhra at that time. The agreement of transfering Thirupathi and Chennai is just a made up story. There was no such thing happened. Potti Sriramulu wanted Madras to be part of Andhra. That's all.

The Madras Governor (Rajaji) was not against Andhra. He was against language based states. Get the facts right buddy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by155.178.4.10 (talk) 18:16, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Pallavas

Pallavas were satraps of Andhra Satavahanas in Palnadu region (Guntur district) who became independent after the downfall of Satavahanas. They initially ruled coastal Andhra and spread their kingdom upto Tamil regions. Later, they shifted the capital to Kanchi due to pressure from Chalukyan kings. Historians agree that Pallavas were of Aryan (Pahlava/Kambhoja) origin but not related to Tamils. Telugu was predominantly spoken upto Kanchi till the advent of British. Joining Tamil areas to Madras first by rail gradually changed the demography towards Tamil dominance. It is prudent on everyone's part to accept history and coexist peacefully. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.165.151.180 (talk) 11:31, 17 January 2007 (UTC).

I do not know where you got the idea that Pallavas are of Aryan origin. —Preceding unsigned comment added by155.178.4.10 (talk) 18:18, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

He was a dubbing artist originally for Suman, Rajasekhar etc. Later he turned into here and acted in few telugu films. here are some links, see http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/Mar172004/update5.aspand http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/kannada/interview/6597.html. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mlpkr (talkcontribs) 17:06, 5 January 2007 (UTC).

Uttarandhra

Telangana, Rayalaseem and Coastal Andhra are the three main regions in Andhra pradesh. It has nothing to do with any regional development boards. These are not "official" regions.--(Sumanth|Talk) 03:43, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Uttarandhra has distinctively separate from costal region both socially and culturally. This is considered separate region by all. If you do not accept, that does not mean it is not a separate region. Please do not remove Uttarandhra from region list. Please discuss before making changes to this document.--216.157.242.150 16:36, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Without discussion you cannot delete. Please let me know your concerns regarding adding uttatandhra to the region list. --204.8.197.45 23:46, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't understand why you are trying to add Uttarandhra. The sentence clearly says the the state is "broadly divided into three regions". Andhra/ Coastal Andhra already includes that. If it is official cite a proper reference which says that. A regional development board has nothing to do with this.--(Sumanth|Talk) 06:18, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Also see the maps which clearly show the three regions. I agree that there are cultural and social differences between Uttarandhra and the rest of coastal districts. I dont deny its existence. But it is still a part of Andhra/ Coastal Andhra. Can you show one reliable reference which contradicts this?--(Sumanth|Talk) 06:26, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Sumanth, Please read this link [[]http://www.blonnet.com/2007/05/17/stories/2007051704252100.htm] to support my reasons for adding Uttarandhra to the region list. Broadly or narrowly is just matter of wording.--69.115.254.20 15:56, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

My personal view: It is advisable to keep the division of Uttarandhra. There is a lot more about this region than many of us know. People have formed division of Konaseema in our wikipedia. It is similar to this. I am one of the persons against against any further division of Andhra Pradesh. United we progress: Divided we fall. Why I think to maintain this region is :

  • 1. Similar to Telangana, it is economically very backward. (do not see visakhapatnam city alone). The tribal areas are still does not have basic needs. This may be the reason why the AP Cabinet have formed a seperate division; because we want a uniform development of entire Andhra Pradesh. Rest of the Coastal area including Godavari and Krishna districts are well developed. If we combine both, we are doing gross injustice this part of the state.
  • 2. Culturally, as mentioned already by someone, there are close resemblance to Kalinga or Southern Orissa. Historically they are commonly ruled by the same kings. See the history section of Vizianagaram district. Then the line of demarcation was Godavari and/or Krishna rivers.
  • 3. Simhachalam temple and many ancient temples history also reveal similar distinct characters unlike some of the South Indian characters.

Hence my request is to maintain this region; Though I do not have any good source readily, I would try to collect some information. Thank you very much.Dr. Rajasekhar A. 05:18, 13 June 2007 (UTC)Rajasekhar1961

Beyond doubt, the former --AltruismTo talk 12:12, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

My take on AP's division

This division issue of the state, is no doubt a very controversial one. Telangana is the most prominent among these breakaway demands. Others include, Rayalaseema, Andhra, Uttarandhra, Dandakaranya etc.. Most of these agitations are lead by people with their own hidden, hypocritical agenda.

Uttarandhra is beyond doubt a part of Andhra (its all in the name.) It literally means the northern part of Andhra, popularly meant to be the coastal part of Andhra Pradesh. Breaking away of a backward region could in fact be a boon to the developed parts, instead of otherwise.

The common man would only be able to recognize only Coastal Andhra (Costa or Circars), Rayalaseema and Telangana. The rest like Uttarandhra, Dandakaranya, North Telangana etc. are newer inventions. Thanking You, AltruismTo talk 04:59, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Comments

To start with, the names 'Andhra' and 'Telangana' are synonymous. Al-Biruni (10th century) talked of Andhra country where a language 'Andhri' is spoken. All medieval Muslim historians referred to the whole of Telugu country as Tilangan. Example: When Musunuri Kaapaaneedu recaptured Warangal from Muslims in 1326 CE he got the titles "Andhradesaadheeswara" and "Andhrasuratraana". Muslims consolidated their position in the present day "Telangana" region since 14th century whereas their fortunes fluctuated in coastal districts and the region controlled by Vijayanagar kings. Thus, 'Telangana' or the region ruled by Golkonda sultans and Nizam Nawabs acquired a distinct identity. Other reasons such as imposition of Urdu also created a psychological gulf. The districts on the coast from Nellore to Barampuram were always homogenous, historically and culturally. Let us not forget that some of the greatest exponents of music and Telugu literatare hailed from Srikakulam and Vijayanagarm districts. Only in the past six decades, economic differences arose due to the efforts of Sir Arthur Cotton. It is unreasonable to create another division by name "Uttarandhra" solely on the basis of economic disparity. If one starts doing such an exercise, India or A.P., can be divided into multiple regions, often comprising of two or three districts. 'Uttarandhra' is a recent political creation. Historically this geographical entity was non-existant. I do not hold the view that another geographical entity is creaed de novo and instill psychological divisions among Telugu-speaking people.Kumarrao 13:21, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Response from Uttarandhra

  • Wikipedia should reflect official regions declared by government[[3]]. Not unofficial regions or governing divisions.
  • Uttarandhra is a separate region from the past till present. If you look at history, Uttarandhra was ruled by Kalinga, Vizianagaram, Bobbili and other smaller kingdoms. It was never ruled by kingdoms that ruled costal districts.
  • When people talk about Uttarandhra, they say Uttarandhra region or Uttarandhra prantham, not Uttarandhra division. Division is unheard when people talk about Rayalaseema or Uttarandhra. People, government or media, when they refer to Uttarandhra or Rayalaseema, they refer as region or prantham, not division. Division is new term being used by you when referring to Rayalaseema or Uttarandhra regions.
  • When regional development boards were created, they would have said divisional development boards by government. Why did govt. they refer to as Uttarandhra regional development board? The answer is simple. Uttarandhra, Rayalaseema, Telanagana and Kostha are regions not divisions. They are regions in the eyes of government. When govt. itself considers Uttarandhra region, I don't understand the whole discussion is about.
  • If you want list revenue divisions, each district is divided into two to three revenue divisions based on the district size. Please do not mix revenue division with region. Region is much bigger in size than revenue division.
  • Please refer to think news link about Uttarandhra Vedic Sammelan[[4]]. You do not read about Konaseema Vedic Sammelan or Konaseema regional development board etc. Here are more links about Uttarandhra region[5]
  • Uttarandhra is always referred to as a region by media, polical parties and people.
  • Uttarandhra has distinct telugu accent i.e. yasha, history, culture of its own different from rest of Coastal Andhra.

Some more comments

  • Please note that wikipedia does not represent the Andhra pradesh goverment. Wikipedia represents widely acceptedfacts. For e.g the Karnataka government has changed the name of Bangalore to Bengaluru, but the name of article in wiki is still Bangalore as i twould take some time beofre Bengaluru is widely accepted and used.
  • I agree that when people do refer to Uttarandhra as a region. But when people use the name Andhra or Cosatal Andhra, what do they mean? Do they mean cosatal districts of Andhra excluding North coastal districts?
  • Historically coastal andhra meant all coastal districts of Andhra pradesh. Some official and unoffical links below:

Article in Hindu about struggle for andhra state which says "Historically, Andhra Pradesh consists of three distinct regions — Telangana, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra." Info about by National Informatics Planning commison report In the above links if Coastal ANdhra didn't include Uttrandhra, do you mean to say that Uttrandhra was not in Andhra pradesh at all?

  • Now lets say historically Costal andhra might have included Uttarandhra (disprove the above the citations if you don't agree), but it is not longer considered like that. Now when did this happen? Is it after Ap government constituted the regional development board in May 2007. Do you any reference before that? I can give you refernce as recent as december 2006 which shows that AP government considered the state to consist of three main regions (here again I am not saying Uttarandhra is not a region, the question does it fall under some major region). See this link dated december 2006:

[6] What are the three regions in this link?

  • Ok, you say after the notificaion in May, the above historical links are no longer valid.

But do you expect people all of a sudden start referring to coastal andhra as "coastal andhra exluding north coastal andhra". It takes time for things to be widely known accepted.

  • Please note that no one here is undermining the importance of Uttarandhra. As you are from uttarandhra you always see your region as a distinct region. But please see it from a neutral point of view and try to understand the common use of the term Coastal Andhra.
  • By the word division I meant something that is offical. The section "divison" contains official partitions or division or regions. I have no objection in addding that "Ap governemnt recognizes four regions " in that section. But geography is a different section.

Once people start widely using the term Coastal andhra to mean "Costal districts excluding Uttarandrha" only then we can say that AP is divided into four major regions. --(Sumanth|Talk) 05:45, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

P.S:Off topic: It is a pity to see very few people involved in andhra pradesh articles. I hope the number of andhr wikipedians increases.

  • See this article by noted political analyst GVL narasimha rao:[7] dated FRIDAY, JUNE 15, 2007. He says--(Sumanth|Talk) 08:12, 15 June 2007 (UTC)"But giving away Telangana may damage the Congress severely in the other two regions, particularly in the coastal region, which is the largest of the three regions." Why is he saying there are only three regions? Because Coastal andhra includes all coastal districts and that is the common term in use.
  • Recently, the Andhra Pradesh government has formed four regional boards. However, the original intention was to form three boards for three regions - what these regions are, is obvious, Kostha, Rayalaseema and Andhra. Please seethis andthis. One way to resolve this is to say that "traditionally, the state of Andhra Pradesh has been described as comprising three regions, namely Kostha, Telangana and Rayalaseema (insert some common refrences on "3 regions") while of late, it is described as comprising four areas, with the Kostha or Coastal Andhra being further divided into Uttarandhra (Northern AP) and coastal Andhra; this can be evidenced in the government order setting up four regional boards for four areas." If there is agreement, we can also mention the area of each of the three regions and area of each of the four regions (just adding the areas of constituent districts shd do the trick) - this would also help the reader in drawing a conclusion about relative sizes of the three/ four areas though we may not be in a position to say when and why (new identity? administrative convenience? political expediency?) the three areas have become four areas. Even during the Telanagana unification movement, the famous poet Dasaradhi wrote in a poem - the 2 crore people from 2 regions of Andhra eagerly await meeting their one crore siblings from the region of Telangana; so, historically, it has been 3 areas (btw, population of current day AP in 1950's was 3 crores). Also, in election analyses, it is shown only as three regions. --Gurubrahma 14:23, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
  • I suggest the following change to Gurubrahma's proposal: "while of late, it is also/officially described as comprising four areas,". This is because the the four region usage is not yet widespread.--(Sumanth|Talk) 04:32, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

"Telugu" vs "Dravidian"

In the Demographics section we find:

"The main ethnic group of Andhra Pradesh is the Telugu people who primarily belong to the Dravidian peoples."

What is the meaning of "primarily" here?

As the definition of a "Telugu person" is a speaker of the (Dravidian) Telugu language, and the definition of a "Dravidian person" is, it seems, a speaker of one of the Dravidian languages -- how can someone be Telugu without being Dravidian?

Is there some subtle racial conception of perhaps tribal peoples who have adopted Telugu even as their mother tongue, but are still not considered Dravidian ethnically? —Precedingunsigned comment added by 76.202.198.54 (talk) 19:26, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Impact of Climate Change on Andhra Pradesh

How about a section on the impact of climate change and global warming on andhra pradesh? It is an important section that needs attention. Might need to create a new article, but that is not necessary. Here is a brief primer:

Climate change models suggest that the global increase in temperature will result in an increasingly erratic monsoon, with increasing spells of drought and floods. Modelling studies indicate that a 2 degree centigrade rise could cause 5-20% reductions of cereal grain yields in South Asia[1]. The Stern report indicates that the krishna river basin will experience severe water stress and drought conditions while the godavari basin will experience enhanced flooding[2]. A world bank report on the effect of climate change on south asia indicated that dry land farmers in AP may see their incomes plunge by 20 per cent[3].

The history of AP starts with the Assaka Maha Janapada 700 BCE located in telangana ,a fact which doesnot even find a mention here

from a wikipedia entry on Assaka: << Assaka (Sanskrit: अश्मक, Aśmaka Pali: Assaka), was one of ancient Indian regions (700–300 BCE). It is one of the solasa (sixteen) mahajanapadas in the 6th century BCE, mentioned in the Buddhist text Anguttara Nikaya.

The region was located on the banks of the Godavari river, between the rivers Godavari and Manjira. It was the only Mahajanapada situated to the south of the Vindhya Range, and was in Dakshinapatha. It corresponds to districts Nizamabad and parts of Adilabad, Nanded and Yavatmal in current-day India.>>

Nizamabad and Adilabad districts are located in present-day Telangana region,so the people of telangana had a unique history for many centuries and the history of Andhra Pradesh doesnot start with all its people living under a single common kingdom i.e Satavahanas despite the Andhra propaganda.

As the bifurcation, on june 2nd, the Andhra Pradesh page will be the official page that will consists of seemandhra info like madhya pradesh and uttar pradesh which were divided. So there is no need for separate Seemandhra page. To explain the meaning of Seemandhra it can be stated in brief on the Andhra Pradesh page itself. The cities of this region are well explained in separate pages of Coastal Andhra and rayalaseema. Seemandhra is not an official name for the residual AP it will called as Andhra Pradesh only.Vin09 (talk) 06:36, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Suggestion to update information on Andhra Pradesh and Telangana pages

Hello everyone

Since a new state will now be made out of the current Andhra Pradesh (next month - May 2014), the current page will need corrections - in nearly all items including the political map, state boundaries, statistics - pop / number of districts, etc.

Any comments? volunteers? Notthebestusername (talk) 10:01, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, please watch the above section, the seemandhra page already existed, it was merged with this page. There is no need to have separate page, Andhra Pradesh will be known with same name even a new state is formed, Ex:madhya pradesh, bihar, uttar pradesh pages. So, the word seemandhra does not exists, only it's the media creation to clearly convey the region. And about major changes. Yes, the changes will be done after the president's official approval.Vin09 (talk) 10:31, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
I agree. We need to update the districts info and the map to reflect the new borders of the state on June 2nd. The bifurcation is reality on June 2nd. Ramcrk (talk) 20:57, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Andhraites?!

June 6 edit: what does Andhraites mean? Presumably people from Andhra Pradesh, but that should be specified more clearly. And do these people deserve to be mnetioned here? Where to draw the line... Can anyone have a good look?Super48paul (talk) 09:17, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Removed content as it has separate page in the name List of people from Andhra Pradesh.--Vin09 (talk) 09:19, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
To be clear, 'Andhraites' is not an ethnic group or anything, it's just an informal way of denoting that someone hails from Andhra Pradesh. It is consistent with similar namings in India, such as Keralites, Mumbaites, Delhites, etc.. --Soman (talk) 13:02, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
With the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, I think it would be better to use, "people from Andhra Pradesh" or "telugu speaking people". By the way, it is not 'Keralites, Mumbaites, Delhites,' but 'Malayālees, Mumbaikars and Delhivālē!—Khabboos (talk) 03:49, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Nagarjuna198 deleting academic material

Nagarjuna198 is deleting extremely well referenced material from scholars, with full quotes.VictoriaGrayson (talk) 02:48, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

There has been extreme edit warring between two of the users about the history section, can anyone please check the section and make them reach consensus, so that the page is not disturbed.--Vin09 (talk) 03:01, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
The phrasing of the article is not good. It talks about ayurveda and various other dubious claims. The whole section is confusing to the reader as his additions lack direction. It may go to a different section such as culture. As per wiki standards, one should not be using original content or copy-pasting bits and pieces of information. Nagarjuna198 (talk) 04:10, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
There is no mention of Ayurveda at all. Did you even read the section? VictoriaGrayson (talk) 14:54, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
Can you paste here exact content that you have added with the heading also? We will work on it and put it in the Article
Development of Mahayana

Rock-cut Buddha statue at Bojjanakonda near Anakapalle, Visakhapatnam

Scholars have suggested that the Prajñāpāramitā Sutras, the earliest Mahayana Sutras,[4][5] developed among the Mahāsāṃghika along the Krishna River in Andhra country.[6] A.K. Warder holds that "the Mahāyāna originated in the south of India and almost certainly in the Andhra country."[7] Anthony Barber and Sree Padma note that "historians of Buddhist thought have been aware for quite some time that such pivotally important Mahayana Buddhist thinkers as Nāgārjuna, Dignaga, Candrakīrti, Aryadeva, and Bhavaviveka, among many others, formulated their theories while living in Buddhist communities in Andhra."[8] They note that the ancient Buddhist sites in the lower Krishna Valley, including Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda and Jaggayyapeta "can be traced to at least the third century BCE, if not earlier."[9] Sri Singha, Savari, Maitripa and Virupa lived and taught in the Andhra region for some portion of their lives or were in some cases permanent residents.[10] Ronald Davidson calls the Krishna River valley "a site of extraordinary Buddhist activity for almost a thousand years."[11]

Can you add this in the religion section religion -> Buddhism -> Mahayana?(Because they are philosophies) That makes sense as they are the religious views of the authors and there were no inscriptions to support their views. I suggest you generalize this by removing names of the authors. I think it has lot of fuss. Please make it concise and to the point. Let me know if you need any help :-) Nagarjuna198 (talk) 02:31, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
@Vin09 (talk) Any thoughts?Nagarjuna198 (talk) 02:48, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
These are not religious views. Williams, Xing, Warder, Padma, Barber and Davidson are scholars and academics.VictoriaGrayson (talk) 04:46, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
I agree that they are scholars. I am Okay to place it in Religion -> Buddhism -> Mahayana section. But please phrase your article in a more concise manner and to the point. Thanks. Nagarjuna198 (talk) 05:00, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
I'm glad you understand they are scholars. The section is already as concise as can be.VictoriaGrayson (talk) 05:07, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
I told you my opinion. It definitely should not be in the history section but you can place it in Religion -> Buddhism -> Mahayana section . If you dont like it, let others give their opinion. If you agree with me, please place it in Religion -> Buddhism -> Mahayana section.Nagarjuna198 (talk) 05:15, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

correct these the Mahāyāna originated in the (south of India)(southern india)--Vin09 (talk) 05:31, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
(south of India) looks fine but almost certainly in the Andhra country and "Author Suggests" implies that they are theories and not they are uncertain and since its related to Buddhism it should go to Religion -> Buddhism -> Mahayana sectionNagarjuna198 (talk) 05:40, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
It does not belong in the religion section, because it has to do with ancient times, not modern times.VictoriaGrayson (talk) 15:34, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
This is relevant but it needs to be mentioned briefly. We can not afford to give too many details in Andhra Pradesh page. May be we can include more details in History of Andhra Pradesh article. How about this. "Experts believe that Mahayana Buddhism was developed in this region along the Krishna river around 3rd century BCE." We can include the references. Ramcrk (talk) 18:25, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
@Ramcrk: I agree with you but few things doesn't make any sense in that article EX: taught in the Andhra region for some portonion of their lives or were in some cases permanent residents..Thatswhy I wanted him to rephrase.. Any thoughts?Nagarjuna198 (talk) 08:51, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
@Nagarjuna198: Lot of content in discussion is already in Mahayana Buddhism article. No need to replicate entirely here. Just few main points that says it developed in this region is enough. Anybody who want to know the details will go to Mahayana Buddhism article. Ramcrk (talk) 13:43, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
The section is not long at all. And the section mentions Andhra sites such as Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda and Jaggayyapeta. Very important. VictoriaGrayson (talk) 18:28, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
@VictoriaGrayson : You dont seem to bother about what we are saying. You just give a standard one-liner answer which doesn't even relate with what we are saying. Vin09, Ramcrk and I are trying to help you make the article better and your reply doesn't answer any of our questions. Few sentences such as taught in the Andhra region for some portion of their lives or were in some cases permanent residents doesnt make any sense. You dont say anything about it but try to say that it should be included. Now I started thinking about the credibility of the article and references.Nagarjuna198 (talk) 06:22, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
Nagarjuna198, you are the only one who says it doesn't make sense. And your English language skills are poor. Its not my problem, that you don't understand the English. Please explain what you don't understand about the English. VictoriaGrayson (talk) 15:21, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
Any one who is reading your comments can understand your so called English language and analytic skills. Can you still explain me were in some cases permanent residents mean in your article. You are just posting non-sense here. Nagarjuna198 (talk) 01:27, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Permanent residents means they lived in Andhra throughout their lives. This is simple English.VictoriaGrayson (talk) 02:57, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
@VictoriaGrayson: LOL..You never pay attention to detail..were in "some cases" permanent residents - what are those some cases? how come someone be permanent resident in some cases? Another one - the Mahāyāna originated in the south of India and almost certainly in the Andhra country - If it is uncertain why should we include it History section? I would rather include this philosophy in Religion section. Also Ramcrk is right.. we should just include the introduction and direct the users to the main article.
FYI- "Permanent Resident" means person who is Intending to reside in that place Permanently and "Permanent Resident" does NOT mean person who has already stayed in that place(Resident would suffice in that case). I feel that these things were added by you and they might NOT have been mentioned in the sources. Nagarjuna198 (talk) 04:38, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
@VictoriaGrayson :The content you wanted to include takes about 2500 characters. Typical wikipedia article is about 50,000 characters(definitely less than 100,000 chars) and we definitely dont want history section to take more than 1/5 of it(ie 10,000 characters). I would expect entire ancient history to take less than 2000 characters(at most 3000 characters). That means Mahayana Buddhism should take much less than 2000 characters. Hope you see my point. Why we need to be concise. Thats the reason I said we can not afford to put too many details, even if the info is correct, relevant and have sources. We should not put more than 2 sentences about Mahayana Buddhism in this article. I know you care about this topic. But you dont need to replicate all the info in all the articles. Mention briefly here. Then include all kinds of details in Mahayana Buddhism article. Ramcrk (talk) 05:51, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
@Ramcrk the Mahāyāna originated in the south of India and almost certainly in the Andhra country - If it is uncertain why should we include it History section? Adding it to Religion section would suffice. Dont you think so? If that is added to History, someone wants to add Hinduism in History..like Rama stayed in Govavari region during vanavasam..etc...Even if you see references, they are theories " Evolution from Early Buddhism to the Trikaya Theory" and so on.. Nagarjuna198 (talk) 05:55, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Totally undue for the religion-section; how many Buddhists are there today in Andrash? It's relevant for the history-section. And the relevance is not so much for the question where the Mahayana originated (the section is used as a WP:COATRACK now, I think), as for the fact that Buddhism once was strong in southern India, an area far removed from the origins of Vedic culture, and also not the homeland of Buddhism. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 06:09, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

@VictoriaGrayson: Phrase it accordingly and put it in History section. I think we can close discussion Nagarjuna198 (talk) 06:26, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
