Rank
editI've amended a claim that he was an engineering "officer". It seems unlikely that he was a commissioned officer, given that he failed to win a place at the Academy and then became an apprentice boiler maker.
The 1921 photo shows him wearing what look like corporal's stripes - according to the relevant wiki page this would make him a "Second Master" or a "Quartermaster Second Class" - the latter is despite the name actually equivalent to corporal.
Confusingly, the Royal Navy used to award long-service stripes which looked like a corporal or sergeant's chevrons. However, in the French Navy they appear to be rank badges. Feel free to change back if I'm wrong. Paulturtle (talk) 04:28, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
