Andy Oldham → Andrew S. Oldham – I agree with the previous comment and propose that Judge Oldham's page be renamed "Andrew S. Oldham" because that is his legal name which he uses on the Fifth Circuit website and in his written judicial opinions. This change would be in conformity with the pages of other judges such as "Stephen A. Higginson" rather than "Steve" or "James C. Ho" rather than "Jim." I also recommend changing his name on the Wikipedia page for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Disclosure: I am a current law clerk to Judge Oldham and am the one responsible for the recent name change to this article, which a subsequent editor reversed. 2600:1700:280:C670:9486:C3C8:87A9:2855 (talk) 15:43, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose: First off, thank you for acknowledging your potential conflict of interest here. I appreciate the transparency. I was the user who reversed the move before, and I'll admit that I have mixed feelings about this request and am leaning to oppose. While you definitely know the subject of the article, Judge Oldham, better than I do, it seems to me that many people close to him call him Andy. See 1, 2, and 3 for examples. With respect to the valid argument that Judge Oldham goes by "Andrew S. Oldham" on 5th Circuit opinions and correspondence, I'm not sure if Wikipedia should necessarily follow that, as now-Justice Neil Gorsuch was referred to as "Neil M. Gorsuch" while he was on the Tenth Circuit (in its opinions), but his article is named "Neil Gorsuch" (without the middle initial. See a source here. Per WP:Commonname, I respectfully disagree with you, and oppose the proposed move of this article. – JocularJellyfish TalkContribs 04:26, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose: per reasoning of JocularJellyfish and typing "Andy Oldham" into Google leads you to the judge. Typing "Andrew Oldham" gives you more sources for Andrew Loog Oldham, who is an English record producer. Snickers2686 (talk) 16:58, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support, reliable secondary sources refer to him as Andrew while some interviewees who know him personally refer to him as Andy [1]. Insufficient in my view to demonstrate that it is the overwhelming WP:COMMONNAME. – Thjarkur (talk) 13:13, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support (as requester) : This is the original proposer of the edit. I apologize in advance if this isn't the proper way for me to respond with further additional comments. I looked at each of the articles cited by JocularJellyfish, and they all call him "Andrew." Judge Higginson goes by "Steve," Judge Ho goes by "Jim," and Judge Clement goes by "Joy," but their article titles each use their legal names rather than their nicknames. Finally, I can tell you that I have talked to Judge Oldham about this matter and he does prefer Andrew in written documents. Though I realize that it would be a conflict of interest for the subject of an article to edit it, I would think that we should respect a person's choice as to what name he is called. WP:COMMONNAME. – 2600:1700:280:C670:9486:C3C8:87A9:2855 (talk) 15:43, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- Note: I've added "as requester" next to the above "support" to clarify. --Mdaniels5757 (talk) 21:23, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support. The cited sources tend to use "Andrew" more than "Andy". Even in the examples cited above, "Andy" is used alongside "Andrew". Thus, the common first name is "Andrew", and we should use that name per MOS:IDENTITY. Although including the subject's middle initial is not needed if the title should be "Andy Oldham", it serves as a WP:NATURALDIS if we are to use his first name, as I think we should. Thus, the article should be retitled Andrew S. Oldham. --Mdaniels5757 (talk) 21:31, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
