It is clear from the Borschev & Partee’s obituary that this linguist had a "long-standing personal preference" for the spelling Zalizniak. The existence of this variant is admitted in Iosad et al.’s obituary. It is also the only variant used by Åkerman. Apparently, his daughter (also a linguist) also uses only i-spelling (e.g.). Surprisingly, in the English metadata of his papers the usual variant is Zaliznyak. The only Zalizniak’s paper written entirely in Enlgish that I was able to find (in fact, an English translation of Russian paper, but still) uses Zaliznjak… I have no access to his French publications, but I am pretty sure that one can find there i-spelling.
Personally, my preference is for Andrei Zalizniak, but Andrey Zaliznyak is closer to the official transcription. I think variation is inevitable here. The version used by his daughter is probably a reason for the preferred spelling as Andrei Zalizniak. Serge925 (talk) 16:46, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
