editNice work with this article, it's very clear and it's interesting to see that castle studies in Germany has already addressed this issue. From what I've seen the idea that these kind of rooms were prisons has stuck around English castles for a while, but Malcolm Hislop's reinterpretations of gatehouses in the north west have done something about that.
