No ones cares about america
editWoah, why iseverything in this article so comparitive? I know its a known fact that americans like to compare themselves to other things in hopes of being able to live up to the power other nations have but firstly: that doesnt needto be done through wikipedua articles. And 2: it aint evergonna happen. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.192.254.93 (talk) 07:35, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
You could put the Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias tag on it, and I think I will! --Cleave and Smite, Delete and Tear! (talk) 21:35, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
Related, I should work on a Manga UK section, as not mentioning Manga UK is a big crime. --Cleave and Smite, Delete and Tear! (talk) 21:37, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
About the deletion thing..
editHi. I'm the one who made this article, and I am aware that it sucks. This was my first article, and could have been better, I know. But I also think it's kind of important; if sci fi gets a fandom page, than hey! why not anime? the fandom is just as large if not more so. I will try to improve this article, but quite possibly will need someone else to completley re-write it. Due to me sucking like that. Peace, Love, and candy! Sanatherandom (talk) 12:44, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- This article needs a lot of work if it's not going to be deleted.--Cattus talk 17:39, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- I know. Sana shall have to work her ass off! Unless...you'd mind helping? I can't do this all by myself, I have other things in my life after all...Sanatherandom (talk) 22:19, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Redirect
editI made Anime fan redirect to this page. Seems to make a lot of sense, ne? Sanatherandom (talk) 22:36, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
So as to avoid an edit war over categories...
editWhy does this article keep being removed from certain categories? Seems kinda pointless if I'm honest. Is it because it's in a sub-category of those categories? if so than fine, but please explain why you're removing links in future. Sanatherandom (talk) 15:17, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Sana, actually I'd been wondering why you've been readding the categories (note that I explained my removal in my edit summaries: [1][2]). Specifically, though, Category:Fandom, Category:Anime, and Category:Manga are all parent categories of Category:Anime and manga fandom, and thus redundant. 「ダイノガイ千?!」(Dinoguy1000) 19:10, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
- That makes sense; I was wondering if that was the case. Thanks for explaining!
Some ideas
editWell you might want to include a section on conventions and maybe one on the fanspeak and subsequent jokes that the anime/manga community has come up with. You might want to look at Glossary of anime and manga for that. Also you might link the concept of cosplay to more places.
Also here is an interesting article you might want to look at. You also might want to add stuff about fandom in japanese audiences and definitely comment on doujin. Also probably you might want go into the music side of things like AMVs and MADs or maybe even into the doujin soft side of things. Touhou probably would be a good inspiration for stuff in music and software. You also might want to comment on the establishment of fan sites like 2chan and such. Maybe even on the role of anime and manga in spurring foreigners to learn Japanese.
Also you might want to comment on companies' response to fansubbing and such both good and bad. Probably also the use of fan jokes in published work, or something like that. Maybe even the cost of living the anime/manga fan's life. Maybe perhaps worries of parents/guardians on the lifestyle of fans.
Just some ideas though alot of them are already covered in their main articles, I'll try to help you out. I'll post more interesting links up soon. Animefringe has a lot of interesting articles that you could probably use, website is here. AngelFire3423 (talk) 23:13, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. I was going to add more to this article, but I wasn't sure what to put, or when I'd have the time. I created it as a placeholder stub, but I guess the time has come for my little article to branch out into the world...*sniff* they grow up so fast.. Sanatherandom (talk) 18:42, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
- xD, well if you want to raise your article by yourself before releasing to the world, you could make the page in your own userspace.
But in any case, here are some interesting articles:
- "Anime-loving youngsters learning Japanese" CBC News article
- "Learning Japanese, Once About Resumes, Is Now About Cool" WSJ news article
- Blog entry by Mizuko Ito but more importantly this master's thesis entitled "Discover Japan: Anime and Learning Japanese" by Annie Manion
Just a note, from what I've seen so far (which isn't all that much) Mizuko Ito seems to appear quite often as source of academic articles on anime fandom.
Some articles from her that might be interesting:
- "The Gender Dynamics of the Japanese Media Mix"
- "Mobilizing the Imagination in Everyday Play: The Case of Japanese Media Mixes"
- "Technologies of the Childhood Imagination: Yugioh, Media Mixes, and Everyday Cultural Production"
I haven't really read those myself yet though. AngelFire3423 (talk) 22:27, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Here's a list of useful articles from Anime Fringe from volumes 1, 3, 4, 6 (I think 2 and 5 are mostly broken links): AngelFire3423 (talk) 00:07, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
- 0_o you should be the one writing this, as you seem to know a lot more than I do. But thanks anyway, I shall get on to this ASAP. *sighs* there's my weekend out the window... Sanatherandom (talk) 14:22, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
You just have to know how to research. And like reading.
- History of anime, Note: not fandom
- Enter the world of hard-core anime fans, might be helpful
- Transcultural otaku: Japanese representations of fandom and representations of Japan in anime/manga fan cultures Good for criticisms of fandom culture, does not describe parent's worries though
- Anime in America: Japans animated movies have risen from cult status to cultural force in the US. Next up for the moviemakers: winning approval from Mom and Dad. Need to register for this (though for free, it says)
- "Discover Japan: Anime and Learning Japanese" Put this up before, but this is a really nice link.
AngelFire3423 (talk) 16:09, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- I do like reading, in fact I'm a total bookworm, I just can't research. I suck at it. Always have, always will. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sanatherandom (talk • contribs) 19:24, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
This is a note for my own personal reference really for when I get around to doing it. ANNCast is a really good source for talks about the fandom, podcast view on Anime News Network. History section needs French fandom included. Also I found a tidbit about Italy, where during a certain period of time, people will randomly translate pretty much anything into Italian and sell it, and then disappear after that (presumably to avoid legality) and it's sort of one time gems; you can apparently find just about anything even stuff that's out of print; I believe it was an ANNCast that had that tidbit. History section also needs to include all the different fanzines that became large news sites, like Anime News Network itself. AngelFire3423 (talk) 01:47, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Someone PLEASE help me find references!!
editI am so, so sorry, but the majority of my references are *gasp* Other pages on wikipedia and/or my lovely helper (Who has already sent me a lot of links which I am very grateful for) ,I don't mean I need more references, I mean I need someone to find the sites I got the current informaation from. Before long this article will be more [citation needed] tags than anything else. Please help!
- Do you mind specifying exactly which references your worried about? AngelFire3423 (talk) 15:48, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Help would be appreciated
editI don't want it to seem like I'm whining, but seeing the (rather huge) list of links above makes me want to scream. Honestly, being a wikieditor means I have to kiss the rest of my life goodbye. So, back to the article- I'm a n00b. I know I am. And, to be honest, someone else would do a much better job of this than me *cough*AngelFire3423*cough* but siriusly, instead of giving me a list af links, could you like, improve the article? there is a list of ideas on this talkpage somewhere or another. Many thanks in advance, but I realy, realy can't do this. I suck at taking notes at school, and taking reference from a site without resorting to copypasta (which WP doesn't allow as far as I know) is near impossible for me. I'm doing this for the good of the article. ~Sana (talk) 16:43, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- I would love to help you out, but right now I have to study for exams. AngelFire3423 (talk) 18:02, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- Ahh...it's ok. I'm just on a quest to find the 'expert' the infobox at the top refers to. I'm to lazy for it to be me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sanatherandom (talk • contribs) 20:59, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Does this still need "in need of attention from an expert on the subject" tag? It was one concern raised over here. AngelFire3423 (talk) 15:34, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
- Probably not. It should have a 'Sana-is-too-lazy-to-edit-this-yet tag though. ~Sana (talk) 15:56, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
=D It got approval and is now on Queue 3. AngelFire3423 (talk) 09:48, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Did some cleanup. Several issues remain...
editI went through and fixed most of the problems related to grammar and poor wording. There are still a lot of issues with informal writing and unsubstantiated claims, though. For example, the first few sentences of the "appeal of anime and manga" seem more like vague conjecture than anything else.
I was also unsure about one particular part the "history of the fandom" section. It originally said the community started in the 1970s with Space Battleship Yamato, which struck me as an unusually specific point of origin. I checked the source, and though I'll admit I didn't read it thoroughly, a brief look-through suggested that it didn't necessarily say anything about SBY kicking off the fandom community as a whole. If that is indeed the case, we'll need another source for covering the origins of the fandom. tktktk (talk) 08:38, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
- I wrote most of that section at three Am on a caffeine high. My sources over all aren't too great. Sorry. ~Sana (talk) 18:14, 13 May 2009 (UTC) 18:12, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Terminology of the article
editCan the word "fandom" be dropped? It's less of a "real" word, and more of an "invented" word used to describe fan communities. Wouldn't "fan community" work better? Besides, the word "fandom" has become associated with individuals who are enthused for their devotion of choice to the point of obsession, unintentionally giving the article a negative connotation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.183.184.43 (talk) 01:51, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Fandom is a well-known and commonly accepted term used within the community, and which people regularly and happily use to describe themselves. I would say that 'otaku' has negative connotations, but fandom is pretty neutral (and is also used in the articles for Science Fiction Fandom etc). 81.155.66.241 (talk) 22:04, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Dropping Fanservice
editIs discussing fanservice in the article really nescessary? It refers more to something associated with anime creators as opposed to the fans. I'd do it myself, but I figure I'm already in some hot water so, figured seeking approval would be best.
Fanservice may be made for anime fandoms. =ˆUwUˆ= (talk) 22:19, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
Widened scope
editFandoms embracing Japanese comics and Japanese cartoons usually also embrace other often related works like music, live films/shows, video games or visual novels or light novels or radio skits associated with fictional franchises. Isn't there a more inclusive umbrella term for all these things? Japanese entertainment fandom? --Ranze (talk) 07:52, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- Anime and manga fandoms are basically the same, so having an article that covers what is essentially the same topic makes sense. However the same can't be said for music, films, video games and novels. These are entirely different and distinct topics from one another. Trying to combine them into one article is only going to create an unfocused article. —Farix (t | c) 20:32, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
