Family
editUnder the header 'Family' it states that Anish moved back and forth between India and Us . It is not clear why, was it because of Anish's chess career or because of his parents work. In case it was because of Anish' career, then he himself moved and his parents went along, although that sounds a little odd for an 8 year old. Then it would probably be better to write it as that his parents moved in support of Anish. If it's because of the parents' career, then they moved and Anish went along. --VanBurenen (talk) 09:25, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
They had another child recently, named "Michael Giri" according to this post[1] by ChessBaseIndia. I couldn't find the exact date listed specifically, but according to this post[2] made by Sopiko herself on Instagram it seems that he was born sometime in June. So that has to be updated. Japanese
editThis article claims that Anish Giri says that he "forgot all his Japanese". http://www.ftd.de/sport/:schach-championat-ein-unvergleichlicher-junge/60083970.html?page=2 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.110.122.156 (talk) 22:33, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Country
editAnish has just one citizenship, which is Russian.24.147.236.34 (talk) 20:05, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
His birthplace is listed as Nepal, but it also says russian-born?
Nationality
editShouldn't his nationality be in the first sentence? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dvqr (talk • contribs) 05:10, 31 December 2013 (UTC)
Playstyle section
editBzweebl (talk · contribs) can you explain this edit? The section cites four sources, what makes you say it's unverifiable? Banedon (talk) 23:11, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Bzweebl: in case the above didn't actually ping. Banedon (talk) 04:11, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry I don’t feel like doing the research to see what sources say about it. I know that the section was poorly written and that this was an internet meme which did not provide a fully accurate portrayal of Giri’s playing style. Bzweebl (talk • contribs) 17:58, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
- I'm going to undo the edit then, since the sources are there, you just are not reading them. Banedon (talk) 20:05, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

anish giri grandma IS from india?
edit1. i changed just now https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Anish_Giri&action=history
2. http://27.34.16.249/ removed in 2022 july that well...anish's dad is indian. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Anish_Giri&type=revision&diff=1101322723&oldid=1100889160
3. http://84.216.136.244/ added in 2022 june that grandma is from india in edit summary but that's not exactly what the edit was. dad's mom can be from india without dad being indian. eg wesley so is from the philippines but is american only now. if wesley has a child with an american and then that child grows up to have a child with an american then the grandchild of wesley has a grandparent from the philippines without either parent of the grandchild as either filipino or from the philippines https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Anish_Giri&type=revision&diff=1093114505&oldid=1092148047 Thewriter006 (talk) 00:48, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
Anish Giri is the No. 1 ranked player in the Netherlands, having switched from Russia in 2009.
editIs there some universal thing on wikipedia how we call chess players or sports players in general?
Eg
- Wesley So - 'Filipino and American'
- Anish Giri - just 'Dutch'
- Sergey Karjakin - 'Russian chess grandmaster (formerly representing Ukraine)'
- Fabiano Caruana - 'Italian and American chess grandmaster'
- Alexandra Kosteniuk - 'Russian and Swiss chess grandmaster who was'
- Bobby Fischer - just 'American'
Well apart from Anish & Sergey, I think the point is regardless of their current nationality / nationalities, say all the countries that have represented, hence
- Bobby, as a chess player, isn't Icelandic .
- Wesley So, Fabi & Alexandra are considered present tense resp Filipino Italian & Russian
But why don't Anish & Sergey follow this pattern? Thewriter006 (talk) 02:32, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
Nationality and birth place
editArticles and this say that Anish Giri was born and bred in Russian
to a Russian mother, he then later moved to the Netherlands when he was eight.[1] I get that he is representing the Netherlands but why is the lead statement labeling him as dutch when he was born in Russia?

- @dxneo
- The answer is in your statement itself, he represents Netherlands in chess competitions currently, his family all live in Netherlands, he has also studied in the Netherlands and if you actually take the time to do some research and reading on Google instead of beating the dead horse of this topic, Giri and his Dutch nationality has been mentioned here.[1][2][3]
- Also, Giri mentioned in an interview with Chess24[4] that he NO LONGER holds Russian citizenship (see the "Do you still have a Russian passport? Do you need a visa?" and the "Was it hard to get Dutch citizenship?" questions) as he had to get a visa to compete at the Candidates Tournament 2020–2021. With the information I have provided here, alongside the fact that the use of Russian-Dutch is factually incorrect and violates WP:CONTEXTBIO, the lede will stay as "Dutch" only.
- Finally, this is not comparable to a case like Fabiano Caruana, who is a dual citizen of America and Italy[5][6][7] and that he had significant achievements as an Italian chess player. Hope that answers your question.
