"Countess of Surrey"

When Anne married Howard, he was not Earl. His father's titles were forfeited in 1485 after the Battle of Bosworth and attainted. The "2nd Duke" was restored as Earl of Surrey in 1489; and restored as the 2nd Duke of Norfolk in 1514, and resigned the Earldom to his son on the same day. Therefore, Anne who died in 1511, was never Countess. In fact, Thomas wasn't even knighted until after their marriage in 1497. -- Lady Meg (talk) 23:47, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Technically she was Anne of York, Lady Howard as he was only a knight during her marriage to him. Or you could go with Anne Howard, but Anne of York is probably the more familiar name as she was a Princess of England. -- Lady Meg (talk) 23:52, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Right, but the name of the page needs to be changed. She was never Countess of Surrey. So I'm proposing to change it to Anne of York (there is no page, it redirects to a page which lists the Duchess of Exeter and this page, the Countess of Surrey which she was not) or Anne of York, Lady Howard. -- Lady Meg (talk) 01:39, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

She was never known as Countess of Surrey at all; I'm seriously wondering who set up the page and assumed that she was Countess. Thomas Howard wasn't knighted at the time of their marriage and he didn't become "Earl of Surrey" until 1514. Anne of York died in 1511/12 (DNB says 1512). The DNB calls her "Lady Anne Howard". I'm still looking for help to delete her previous page which shows as a disambiguation Anne of York, Countess of Surrey which has been wrong for years. -- Lady Meg (talk) 00:24, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Under Titles there is a note that "Anne of York would never have been Lady Howard since that style did not come into use until the 17th Century." If this is true, she should not even be listed as Lady Howard, but simply Anne of York. If the above statement is not true, it needs to be removed from the article. It creates confusion. Best would be to find out how she was referred to in the records of the time between her marriage and her death and get a definitive answer. History Lunatic (talk) 07:12, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Page Name

When was this page renamed and why? She is Lady Anne Howard. We’ve had this discussion before and it was moved because she was never Countess of Surrey. Some random IP’s tried to put back in that she was the Countess of Surrey I see. Disappointing as I did research on all of this. — Lady Meg (talk) 00:25, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

It was moved in 2014[1]. That's too long ago to undo now as a technical request. Any new move should be requested in the usual way. This time, please wait for someone else to close the requested move rather than doing it yourself unilaterally. DrKay (talk) 15:39, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
