Clean up

Anyone up to making this more like an encyclopedia article, and less like a Teen Beat profile / stalker shrine? ccwaters 15:07, 27 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

Is the name Niittymäki or Niittymaki? mäki sounds like it would be the real one but I'm not sure. If it is, then we'd need to rename the article, right? --HJV 21:03, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's been the source of much debate actually. My stance: its Niittymaki in ENGLISH. Check WP:HOCKEY discussions for further info. ccwaters 21:59, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
The name of this article should be Antero Niittymäki, but after that it could be typed as Niittymaki. Lapinmies 13:07, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
This article was MOVED from Antero Niittymäki for no reason other than the ä. If so many people think it should be at the ä version that there is a discussion on the page about it, maybe it should be moved back...? PS his jersey in the Olympics has the ä, and I am watching him play right now. ;) Hazelorb 20:35, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
It says "Suomi" on the front and he's playing against a team with "Росси́я" printed on their jerseys. What's your point? ccwaters 21:07, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, I'm pretty sure those jerseys were issued by Finnish-speaking Finland, not English-speaking NHL (although if you are a Habs fan it would be technical to say part-French). Anywho, it doesn't matter because Mr. Sundin will give this Niitymaki a schooling anyways on Sunday. Oy, Olympic hockey this year has been dull... I want my NHL back.   Croat Canuck   03:20, 25 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad the page was finally moved back to the correct Finnish spelling, Niittymäki. The custom in English Wikipedia is to render ethnic names in the original -- witness all the Polish football player pages and such. The English version should be then added as a redirect page, which was done here. -- Mareklug talk 11:28, 25 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Merkin bastardizations"

edit

While it's useful to add measurements in both European and American units, I consider it highly inappropriate to substitute centimeters for feet/inches in a derogatory manner. Antero is, after all, a player on an NHL team in the United States, so both measurements are equally appropriate. You'll also find that practically all NHL player pages give the players' height and weight in feet and pounds because, well, they're playing in North America. In a nutshell, your units of measurement aren't better than anyone else's. -Elrith, 16.8.05

I know that the US is one of the few, if not the only, country not to use the metric system, but since Antero plays in the US it is appropriate to have these measurements in US units. I do not mind having the other measurements since he did play in Finland for a while, and the rest of the world can understand better, and I appreciate the edit for that, but the way it was worded was very offensive. "Added metric measurements" would have been a much more appropriate and polite way of phrasing your edit. Maybe you should think before you type next time. --Hazelorb — Preceding undated comment added 22:23, 20 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
"Merkin bastardisations" mainly referred to the wildly inaccurate "phonetic spelling" of his name, which would have sounded unintelligible to a native Finnish speaker. JIP | Talk 12:51, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Did not have to be phrased that way, still. Besides, not everyone knows IPA and it was more accurate than the one that was on the Flyers website back in 2004. It's good that it's in IPA now, so that's why Wikipedia exists - to better the articles! Not to insult those trying to add information, you know? Hazelorb 20:53, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

English Wikipedia

edit

Why is Nittymaki's (I know he's a Finlander) name being spelt with Finnish diacritcs. This is the English Wikipedia, are Angolphone names being placed (without diacritics) on the Finnish Wikipedia? Seeking information, rather then an argument. GoodDay 21:40, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

You really missed all that? :) Its on going debate that ramps up every couple months. I'm on the non-diacritics side personally. ccwaters 21:47, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I didn't miss it. In fact I've posted earlier at that discussion, I'm a non-diacritics backers as well. GoodDay 21:52, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
This article should be moved to Antero Nittymaki, to conform with concensus of NHL player bio pages. See Jaromir Jagr, as an example. GoodDay 19:15, 8 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
As usual I don't believe this should happen. I can understand on team pages not to use them as jerseys don't use them. But for the article about a player it should be left the way it is. We don't change Pavel Bure's name to Paul Bure even though that is the english spelling of it. --Djsasso 21:00, 8 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

:::::See my compromise proposal on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Player pages format. If we can't have ALL euro/french bio articles the same, perhaps this compromise is a better way. My main interest, is to end the Diacritical debate/dispute once & for all. GoodDay 21:28, 8 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've scratched out my compromise proposal, it wasn't under Rfc (my mistake). PS- This article should match the NHLPA version of NHL bios. GoodDay 22:01, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
As long as Nittymaki is an NHL player, his article should be simillar to his NHLPA bio page: English title, Diacritics in bio content. GoodDay 23:16, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Get this now, his name is NITTYMÄKI. He is not owned by the Philadelphia Flyers, he is not a slave and they don't decide how his name should be spelled. His birth certificate does. He is a finish born hockey player, with a name spelled with a Ä, not an A. The Ä makes the pronunciation very much diffrent from the name spelled with an A. Be proud over that there is cultural diffrence in this world, other languages use diacritics, finish language doesn't. NHLPA, and all other databases don't decide how a players name is spelled. Not using diacritics is for keeping it simple so search functions work. --Krm500 09:24, 10 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll be glad when these Diacritical disputes are over, one way or the other (diacritics or no diacritics). GoodDay 18:29, 10 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
At least you're not like the troublemaker who purposely moved pages to non diacritical forms, just to get attention to his argument, without any consensus, ie this one and Selänne, etc. The war is annoying, but that was just un-goodwikipediaediting-like.
Since the redirects from the non diacritical versions exist... It is kind of like saying that pi should never be written as a symbol, since that is a Greek letter, or that the entirety of the "special characters" section below every edit box on every English wikipedia page should not be there. I mean iso-8859-1 is default for a purpose...
But my arguments will obviously not convince you, and yours will not convince me. This war is never ending. And in the end it does not matter. Well, except to maybe the players, in the broadest sense. As in, when I had Niittymäki signing stuff, he was pretty happy when some of it had the ä. I am sure many players feel like that. It is not you who is ruling the world and how they spell their name... Ohh whatever I cannot whine about this anymore it is so pointless. Hazelorb 07:07, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
See Krm500's compromise proposal for NHL Euro/French Canadian bio articles, at his talk page & mine. GoodDay 18:11, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Stats

edit

Niitty's NHL.com stats should be incorporated with the wiki current stats. Hazelorb 04:04, 9 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Done as of today. My next question for anyone actually reading this is this old archived version of the page: [1] a lot of the information was removed back when the page was moved to the non-diacritic version because it resembled a "teen beat article" I think was the phrasing - now that this article is only B-class and lacking in personal information, as raters told me, would any of this be good to put back in? I am the one who tracked it all down so I would know which references to get back and as you can see they're all there. I am very meticulous with that sort of thing. He also had a daughter recently (I believe he has another child as well) so maybe that kind of thing could be put in as well. Thoughts? Hazelorb 08:55, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nitty's Masks

edit

Nitty had an old mask that was gray featuring a gangster holding a Tommy gun, the gangster featured is Frank Nitti at the top. A Flyers symbol is in the middle, and The title "NITTY" is at the lower chin part on the mask surrounded by bullet holes. Nitty's new mask is white featuring Frank Nitti with a Tommy gun at the top, the Flyers symbol in the middle, and "NITTY" on the lower chin in orange and black letters. "NITTY" is still surrounded by bullet holes but not as many. Nitty, in my opinion has the coolest mask in the histort of the NHL. Niittymaki is Better than Marty Biron. No offence to Marty. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.251.132.184 (talk) 23:13, 4 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can't find a video on my hard drive (I have a lot of his phantoms saves), but what happened was he made a save and it bounced off of the glass up the ice and into the goal. It was spectacular. Hazelorb (talk) 03:04, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
