HMS Invincible

edit

Much of that section was complete nonsense. The British and Australian governments had already agreed on the sale of Invincible in February 1982, 2 months before the Falklands War started. Nearly 2 months into the war, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser offered to cancel the sale if desired. The decision to acquire Invincible was not "overturned", the British government withdrew the offer to sell in July 1982, a month after the war ended. References in HMS Invincible (R05)#Proposed sale and Falklands War. Synnot did not argue the merits of the purchase based on the Falklands experience because he had already retired by the time Britain withdrew the sale. 203.7.140.3 (talk) 02:33, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

removal of sourced material

edit

Someone recently removed a reference to Synnot's blindness. The edit summary stated that the anonymous editor was Mark Colvin and the information was untrue. I will take this at face value. I understand how annoying it can be when information that you feel or know is incorrect appears on Wikipedia: I've been there!

I encourage that editor to create an account. Wikipedia editors will be very happy to talk you through the rules, e.g. the standard of inclusion is not truth but verifiability: Wikipedia:Verifiability. Unfortunately, in wiping away the sentence about his blindness, that edit also removed a useful reference, to his obituary in The Defender, the national journal of the Australia Defence Association. I have reinstated the sentence, as it is backed up by a printed source. If you can find another suitable source, please feel free to add it too. BrainyBabe (talk) 19:02, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
