I tried and failed to make sense of the history of his academic career in the es-wiki article. There are too many terms that are specific to Spanish academia that I just don't properly know. For example, I would understand "catedrático numerario" as "tenured professor", but they have him receiving that before his doctorate. Also, "catedrático de enseñanza media" would seem to me to be something like like a professor teaching people who would teach undergraduates (maybe that's right, but I have no idea what to call it).
