Fasting Rules

edit

A poster recently edited the fasting rules in the article to state that fish was allowed every day except Wednesday and Friday. While some jurisdictions may allow this, they do so only by way of economia and it is not the standard practice of the Orthodox Church. I reverted the edit, and wanted to explain why here. The fasting rules for the Apostles' Fast are found in Chapter 33 of the Typicon, and are as follows: "It should be noted that in the Fast of the Holy Apostles and of the Nativity of Christ, on Tuesday and Thursday we do not eat fish, but only oil and wine. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we eat neither oil nor wine.... On Saturday and Sunday we eat fish." The expression, "we eat neither oil nor wine" implies no fish, since any time oil and wine are forbidden, fish is automatically forbidden also—the allowance of fish being considered a greater dispensation than the allowance of oil and wine. The chapter then goes on to describe the ranks of feasts on which dispensation is made either for wine and oil, or for fish, wine and oil. MishaPan 21:18, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
