Preamble
editIt is common for a dab page to start with one or two commonly used senses of the term being disambiguated (MOS:DABORDER "In cases where a small number of main topics are significantly more likely to be the reader's target, several of the most common meanings may be placed at the top, with other meanings below.". That's "placed at the top", not "included in a sentence of prose".) I believe that this version of the dab page is more helpful to more readers than this one: in the latter, mobile app is buried in a sentence of text and is not annotated except as "(more specific)". I see no evidence at Computer program to suggest that anyone searching for "App" means to get to that page. Please discuss. PamD 17:05, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- Note that the two examples linked from MOS:DABORDER (Mercury and Mojave) include the wording "most often refers to" and " commonly refers to", without sources for these statements. (Related to this edit statement). PamD 17:32, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- slight preference for #1, but it's not a strong preference. Application program is probably better than computer program.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 17:15, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. I see no evidence that anyone means "mobile app" when he says "app". Nowadays, everything is an "app", a computer program. Particularly, Windows Store does not sell mobile apps at all. Google Apps and Office Web Apps are not mobile apps at all. Mac App Store does not sell mobile apps either. Apper and AppStream don't have anything to do with mobile apps either. That's how far "app" has touch me yet. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 17:30, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- I agree, app has meanings beyond mobile app, but app still commonly means a mobile app, and slightly less commonly "application software". WE don't need a link to Computer program, as Application software is a particular type of computer program.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 17:35, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. This point of view has a problem: It is analogous to refusing to recognize the players of a FIFA World Cup as humans because there is no Indians among them. Although it is true that apps are never operating system, the term is not restricted to application software only. Apps in Nokia Store and Windows Store are often utilities and video games too, not just applications. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 13:31, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- application software, in its broader definition, includes games and utilities.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 15:13, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- Except that broad definition is called "computer software". "Application" and "utility" are antonyms.

- App is not application anymore. Just like PC, which is not personal computer anymore. Their linguistic domain has shifted away from their etymology. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 18:12, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- I find the first version preferable. older ≠ wiser 00:51, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- The 10:28, 11 December 2013 version by PamD is, relative to the 16:21 version by Codename Lisa, easier to understand and navigate quickly. Since DAB pages are navigation aids, not content articles, the earlier version is therefore preferable. The history and use of the various "applications" can be specified in articles, but need not be on the DAB page. Cnilep (talk) 02:31, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- I agree that following MOS
- is crucial for creating a more accessible and reader-friendly disambiguation page. Placing the most commonly searched meanings at the top, rather than buried in prose, helps ensure that readers can quickly find what they’re looking for.
- Regarding the "Mobile app" link, I see your point. It would indeed be more helpful to present it more prominently on the page, with appropriate annotations, rather than just within a sentence or as "(more specific)." I'll revise the page accordingly to improve its clarity and make it easier for readers to navigate.
- As for the "App" page redirecting to "Computer program," I understand your perspective. It's possible that many users searching for "App" might indeed be looking for information related to mobile applications. I'll consider discussing this further with other contributors to see if a change is warranted. AbdulMalik.134 (talk) 11:42, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
