DISPUTED

There are several local names for the mountains, many of which Easterners will recognize as favorite vacation spots. These include the Catskills{{fact}}, the Poconos{{fact}}, the Finger Lakes{{fact}} area, and the Allegheny Mountains.

The Appalachian plateau is also known as the coal mining area, because it is the only region in Virginia that does coal mining. Other parts of the plateau are in West Virginia, Western Pennsylvania, and Western New York State {

2. Which leaves no room for the Catskills, and Poconos... they should be too far east, as may be the Finger lakes.

I've revised with citations. Some of the cites are to texts nearly a century old, so I'm not certain if the definition has changed since. GRBerry 00:52, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Found via more research a current US Geological Service listing of the sub-sections of the plateau. Using it instead. Removing expert tag. GRBerry 01:24, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

We still need a section on the history of the region.
