Capitalisation

edit

I see that this has been moved from "Approved School" to "Approved school". I think this is wrong because "Approved School" was the official term. Alarics (talk) 21:27, 10 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Approved schoolApproved School

No, they were replaced by Community Homes with Education, at any rate in England and Wales. Young Offenders' Institutions are what used to be Borstals, I think. But that is all by the way. -- Alarics (talk) 23:10, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose—This doesn't seem to be a proper noun. WP:MOSCAPS: "Wikipedia avoids unnecessary capitalization." It's probably "correct" either way, in those cases we don't capitalize. ErikHaugen (talk | contribs) 06:47, 26 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think you are missing the point that an Approved School was not the same thing as an approved school. An approved school might be any ordinary school approved by, say, the government or some relevant standards authority. "Approved School" was a technical term for what was not an ordinary school at all but in reality a kind of reformatory. -- Alarics (talk) 10:55, 26 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Why do you think I am missing that point? I understand that—it's a particular kind of reform school. It's still a kind. I realize that it is capitalized frequently. I am not saying it is wrong or incorrect to capitalize it. It is also written in lowercase frequently, and it is not wrong or incorrect to write it lowercase. Wikipedia's style in these situations is to not capitalize it. ErikHaugen (talk | contribs) 19:29, 26 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Agree. Perhaps MOSCAPS needs tweaking. It seems to be often misunderstood in exactly this way. Andrewa (talk) 00:01, 27 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. This is exactly the usage of capitalisation in English. Andrewa (talk) 00:01, 27 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
