Broad gauge

edit

Maybe this might be mentioned in the article...

United Kingdom See also: 5 ft 6 in gauge in Scotland The 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge was actually first used in Scotland for two short, isolated lines, the Dundee and Arbroath Railway (1836-1847) and the Arbroath and Forfar Railway (1838- ). Both the lines were subsequently converted to standard gauge. --Grijalvo (talk) 10:11, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

A GA from 2009. There's some uncited statements that need to be cited. Onegreatjoke (talk) 18:23, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and this article also needs to be updated as well for the 2021 UK census as some sections are sourced to the previous ones. Onegreatjoke (talk) 00:17, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Keep GA status. I should say at the outset this is my first contribution to a GA reassessment discussion and I'm not entirely sure of the procedure. I formed my opinion by reading the article as it looked after being awarded GA status in 2009[1] alongside the current version.[2] I'm assuming the criteria for GA status is largely unchanged from 2009.
My overall impression is that the article has improved. Large sections of text have been rewritten to improve flow/readability. Additional relevant images have been included. Further encyclopedic content has been added with supporting inline references.
My criticisms are:
(i) Governance section needs to be updated.
(ii) Demography section needs updating
(iii) Notable people has a lack of referencing. Many of the entries do not describe the person's relationship with Arbroath.
(iv) House price stats in Economy section outdated. Haven't come across this in other articles on towns/villages. Maybe better scrubbed as it requires constant updating.
(v) Public services has excessive detail re the list of recyclable materials.
However, I think the shortfalls can be overcome without much difficulty. Indeed, I'm unsure whether failing to update statistics invalidates GA status so long as the material is supported with reliable, sources at the time of writing.WP:GACR Rupples (talk) 00:44, 24 January 2023 (UTC) (signed late after reminder) (Edit: added diffs for versions compared) Rupples (talk) 08:57, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Possible spin off of notable people list

edit

Given the number of notable people I wonder if it would improve the article to spin off this section to a separate article/list. Rupples (talk) 02:46, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Rupples given the number of entries that do not have a cited connection with the settlement it would be as well to check that all entries have such before considering a spin off.SovalValtos (talk) 10:25, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Agree. If reliable references are not sourced for an individual, the name should be removed. That could reduce the list and negate the need for a spin off. Is there a recommended limit to the number of notable people associated with a place before a separate list page is created? Another point is, it's not particularly informative or looks good presentation wise for the list to be formatted alphabetically. Better to subdivide, maybe by occupation? Rupples (talk) 11:02, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Rupples I do not know about any recommended number limit. Rising date order looks good unless a list gets very long when occupation might be better?SovalValtos (talk) 11:27, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Culture

edit

In the third series of Torchwood (known as Children of Earth (2009)), an orphanage was situated in Arbroath called Holly Tree Lodge, where 12 orphans in 1965 were abducted by an alien race known as the 456.

The above is not sourced. The only reference I've found is to a fandom site. I've heard of Torchwood but confused what this means - is/was there a real Holly Tree Lodge orphanage or is it a fictitious place? There's an image on the fandom site, which looks like a still from the series. I'm inclined to remove this from the article. Views? Rupples (talk) 13:32, 27 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the unsourced trivia.SovalValtos (talk) 14:29, 27 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Economy: Housing

edit

This subsection gives house price details for 2006. Haven't seen this in other articles on UK places and it's not a suggested inclusion in Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements. If this is included why not rents? Would require frequent updating. On balance, I'm for removing this. Thoughts? Rupples (talk) 22:50, 28 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

It might be worth asking the editor User:Nick, that added the section in January 2007, what their current approach would be.SovalValtos (talk) 23:36, 28 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
