Image vs. Reality

That's a great image provided of Archie Goodwin. Of course, everyone's mental picture may vary. Archie admitted that Orrie Cather had something on him in the looks department, and Archie was no fop or dandy, but as a lady's man he was attractive and knew how to dress.

"partner"

Archie is Wolfe's live-in employee and partner in the private investigation business ...

"Partner" implies an ownership interest. Is there any evidence of that? Though I haven't read the books recently, it seems clear that he's on salary. —Tamfang (talk) 01:46, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Reduction in pic size

Having trouble with my keyboard and two revisions were made via misclick on 4/30/11. My intention was to restore the size of the image of Archie after someone had reduced it. I saw, and see, no rationale adduced for the reduction other than an utterly personal preference. Perhaps the editor wishes to provide a more substantive rationale than a snarky "a bit damn large." Archie's independent agency

To editor Mirawithani -- Thank you for including the quote about "a matter of principle." It's a useful addition. I have done a bit of further editing: while Archie certainly wants to impress upon Wolfe that his income has been greater as an independent than as an employee ("I'll have an audit . . .") he cannot be said to "lord it over" Wolfe. No one lorded it over Wolfe. (Maybe Lewis Hewitt in Black Orchids and Jerome Berin in Too Many Cooks, but only because each had something Wolfe wanted.) I extended the quote: if we're going to cite motives we might as well let Stout himself do it.

And thank you for not restoring the imputations regarding loyalties, functional inadequacies and deepened appreciations. Those were inarguably OR. TurnerHodges (talk) 00:45, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Archie's age

To editor WFinch: I didn't change it, but I think it should be "early 30s," with both references -- the one in Stout's memo stating 32, along with the one you also had but then removed to Stout's stating 34 to McAleer. Mirawithani (talk) 13:56, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

PS, I still think "early 30s" is reasonable, but sheesh, look at this, in Ch.10 of OMDB, Archie to Wolfe:

"I'll count up to twenty-nine," I said, "one for each year of my life and one to grow on and one to get married on, and then - "

There may be other odd references in the series, too. I found this and tracked it down after noticing that Archie's age as 29 in OMDB is mentioned in the book, "The Archie Goodwin Files," which also says it's 25 in LoFM, but I couldn't track that one down to verify. Thank you, I've done as you suggested. An editor had contributed yesterday that Archie gave his age as 33 in Too Many Women, but because Mrs. Pine was involved I had a feeling it might not be that easy. — WFinch (talk) 15:20, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

As to 25 in LOFM: I cannot find any direct confirmation. However, LOFM mentions two or three times that Archie had been living in the brownstone for seven years (the start of chapter 2, for example). Now, in 4th of July Picnic, Archie said that he attended college for a couple of weeks and, apparently shortly thereafter went to work for Wolfe. If he was 18 when he tried, say, Oberlin and found it childish, then seven years later he would be 25. It's a stretch, I know, but anyone with enough motivation to write The Archie Goodwin Files might surely total those two quotes and come up with 25. TurnerHodges (talk) 23:37, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

I bet you're right and that's exactly what they did -- put 2+2 together and got 25. But I doubt that's what Stout himself did, given his indifference to consistency and his own comments putting Archie's age at 32 and 34. Stout might have started out thinking Archie should be in his mid-late 20s but changed his mind because he decided that early 30s would work better, which I think it does because not likely that the kid who came from small-town Ohio would have acquired the NYC street smarts and sophistication he demonstrates through most of the series while still that young. And I can't see either Lily or Lucy Valdon giving the time of day to a 20-something Archie. Mirawithani (talk) 00:32, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
