Etymology

Modern Persian shīr = "lion". Could his name mean "lion of the law"? Anthony Appleyard 20:39, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

The word for "lion" derives from the same root as the words for "rule" and "king": OP/Avestan kshathr- "dominion", from Indo-Iranian *xšaθr- with the same meaning. The words for "lion" and "king" are homonymic in some Iranian dialects.

Arda- (not to be confused with ard-, Phl: yrt-, "fortune") derives from the OP/Avestan word for "truth", "fulfillment", "realization", "in conformity [with itself/with reality]" etc, from Indo-Iranian *ŗtá- with the same range of meaning.
