Sourcing

edit

This page, as of this version, is rather poorly sourced. It relies on the author's own website, the author's publisher's website (admittedly, an academic press, but still in the business of selling (and hence, promoting) books), and the Illinois Center for the Book, a user-edited Wiki. Better sourcing is needed. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 19:47, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

As a guide, please refer to WP:RS to see what kind of sourcing would help. In general, we're looking for indications of significant coverage in sources outside the control or influence of the subject. So his own website and his publisher's website are not considered reliable. Additionally, the sources should be under some kind of editorial control, so that we can presume that at least basic fact checking is in place so that we can rely on the sources to verify the contents of the article. This rules out the Illinois Center for the Book (and, oddly enough, Wikipedia itself!) These policies are held particularly strictly for biographies of living persons. I fully agree and will remove some promotional claims without reliable third-party sources. In particular, I see no indication the Illinois State Library names people "author of the year"; that title, in an Illinois context, seems to be bestowed by the Illinois Association of Teachers of English, and I saw no indication that they bestowed the title any later than 2011, nor that Bernstein received it at any time before then.
