The one world record
editImplied by the name of the article I think the actual world record should be more clearly visible and early noted, with other types of records and routes and that sort of thing coming after it and in a manner which shows what is what and what is most important. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:C440:20:1116:E953:818A:61C9:44B (talk) 00:49, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Criteria to select the most "famous" races?
editHi,
I am surprised by the choice of the most famous around the world races. The Oryx Quest which was a complete failure is listed but the Volvo Ocean Race isn't. Badzil (talk) 19:46, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

rewording about "one single waypoint" and route rules
editThe following passage in the article doesn't make sense to me:
According to the WSSRC, for around the world sailing records, there is a rule saying that the length must be at least 21,600 nm calculated along the shortest possible track from the starting port and back that does not cross land and does not go below 63°S. The great-circle distance formulas are to be used, assuming that the great circle length is 21,600 nm. It is allowed to have one single waypoint to lengthen the calculated track. The equator must be crossed.[1] In reality, this means that the boat should pass a waypoint at or not far from the antipode of the starting port of the journey (the exact position depends on how short the shortest possible track is). For example, the Vendée Globe starts at 46°N 2°W, has a waypoint at 57°S 180°E, and barely makes the distance requirement. The participants don't have to go to the antipode at 46°S 178°E since the rounding of Africa gives extra distance.(emphasis added)

The bolded passages above, especially, puzzled me.
I wonder if better wording is as follows (if I am correct about what is actually meant, without access to the source):
According to the WSSRC, for around the world sailing records, there is a rule saying that the length must be at least 21,600 nm calculated along the shortest possible track threading between land masses from the starting port and back that does not go below 63°S. Great-circle distance formulas are to be used to calculate distances between each turn around a land mass. One additional waypoint out at sea may be included in the route specification to lengthen the calculated track. The equator must be crossed.[1] Note the required total distance in nautical miles is approximately the 40,075.017 kilometres (24,901.461 mi) equatorial circumference of the Earth (or the nearly identical meridional circumference). In practice, this means that a boat should pass a waypoint at or not far from the antipode of the starting port of the journey. For example, the Vendée Globe race starts at 46°N 2°W, has a waypoint specified at 57°S 180°E, and barely makes the distance requirement. The race participants don't have to go all the way to the antipode at 46°S 178°E since the rounding of Africa gives extra distance.

Bolding here indicates some of the words I changed or added. In the revision, I was able to completely drop the phrases "that does not cross land" and "(the exact position depends on how short the shortest possible track is)". I think this revised passage is better, assuming my interpretation of the rules are correct. Again I have not read the rules; the reference link is not working for me. Comments welcome. --doncram 23:46, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
