There is a reference in the Great Eastern Railway Magazine, August 1918, page 150 which reads:

"Amongst the VC heroes is Private A H Cross, MG Corps, who advanced single-handed to an enemy trench and, with revolver, forcee seven Boches to surrender and carry their machine guns with tripods and ammunition to our lines. Mr Cross at one time was a GER porter, but left that service for the Royal Dockyard, Woolwich. At home in South London, he said:'Let the war alone while I am here. It's warm enough out there I can tell you'"
