I would be grateful if somebody could add Ukrainian names of the towns mentioned in the article. Tymek (talk) 19:50, 22 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I tired to add the names to those cities which I could find. Others need some more extensive Googling than what I did to no avail. —dima/talk/ 21:38, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I did not have time to search for Ukrainian names. Due to different alphabets, it is very time-consuming. And it is obvious that name places should be in Ukrainian. Tymek (talk) 01:11, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

The title seems sort of awkward. Can I move it to get rid of the first "the"? Ostap 03:50, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sure. Please do. Tymek (talk) 04:19, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Use English

edit

Stop changing the names of these cities into Polish. This is the English wikipedia, and as such the article should use the English names for the cities in Ukraine that are referred to in the text. Also, look above, there is consensus. The creator asked for someone to add the proper names and replace the Polish ones. This article cannot be used to justify vandalism on Kharkiv Metro. Ostap 01:48, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Use English!? Are you out of your senses? I probably speak Albanian here, don't I!? And how does it concern Kharkiv Metro!? What the fuck is vandalism there? Are you a chump? So...as for this article: no, there is no consensus because I don't agree! Actually, these cities became Ukrainian in 1939 (legally - after WW II), originally they are Polish. Ok never mind, now they are Ukrainian, but why when speaking about Polish organisation cannot we use Polish names? Why does Pole speaking about his own cities have to use not his own language, but someone else's? -- Whiteroll (talk) 10:10, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Just use the English names on English wikipedia. Thanks. Ostap 20:42, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, do you say Austrian Embassy in Ungarn, or Hungarian Embassy in Osztrák Köztársaság? That's not the best idea, because this is English Wikipedia, so we should use English names, but not Polish names with numerous mistakes (like the lack of kreskas and ogoneks, e.g. Sudova Vyshnia is not a "garden cherry" and its very difficult to pronounce Zydaczow). Thanks — NickK (talk) 16:46, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Please do not comment on the users. Well, if we write about an Indian community, shall we use Hindi, and shall we use names in Japanese talking about Japanese communities? So please use the names in English, not Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Albanian whatsoever — NickK (talk) 10:55, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Indian community? What the ravings of a madman!? Have we ever annexed Indian territory? No. And Polish one? Yes! Stop this idiocy and let the things be as they are! -- Whiteroll (talk) 11:10, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Please be civil and stop personal attacks, pleace. Personally I annexed neither Indian nor Polish territories, and please remember that Wikipedia is not only for Ukrainian or Polish editors — NickK (talk) 11:57, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ooh! Stupid vertebrate... -- Whiteroll (talk) 23:12, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • [1] I wish he would take his own advice. Lviv is not Ukrainian, it is the English name of the Ukrainian city. There is absolutely no reason to use Lwow. Please stop edit warring or you will be blocked again. Ostap 20:57, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh Jesus! I am bored to death with your dullness! There is no English name for Lwow because it has never been English city. We have got German name Lemberg for it since the city was under the rule of Austria for some time, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian ones Lwów, Львов and Львів respectively, mostly for the same reason. For example, in the 19th century the thought of calling the city Lviv would never occur to any Englishman, he called it Lemberg. Lviv results from transliteration of Львів, name for the city in Ukrainian. I insist positively upon opinion that if we speak of Polish organisation we must use English variant of Polish name Lwów, that is Lwow, not Lviv etc. — Whiteroll (talk) 12:19, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I ask my question again: have you ever seen something like Austrian Embassy in Ungarn and Hungarian Embassy in Osztrák Köztársaság in the texts in English? I don't even mention that you have mispelled most of the Polish names, let alone this mistakes. But English really has its variant for Ukrainian: Львів: it's Lviv, see, for example, Merriam-Webster Online, which gives: Lviv, Polish Lwów. The city should not belong to the country where the language is spoken to get a name in this language, in other case all the languages of the world would be extremely poor. So please use English variant Lviv which is given in the dictionary — NickK (talk) 20:15, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

According to WP:PLACE, the name that should be used is the one that is most commonly used in English sources. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 12:17, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
