However, I hm having trouble understanding it. For example, it seems to say that the British wanted an alliance with the Assyrians for reasons of geographic location. But it sounds like the Assyrians had already been kicked out of their homeland, so where were they and what was important to the British about there geographic location?

I'm sorry that I don't know enough about this history, but if you want the average Wikipedia reader to understant what is going on, I recommend that the article be more concise. All the detial clouds the underlying issues for me, and I'm probably average. KarenAnn 20:36, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

It wanted to colonize what was then "Mesopotamia" (or Iraq today,) with the support of Assyrian army, it was a done deal for the Brits to Colonize Iraq by marging them into Iraq's army. 2. They needed the Assyrian army also to counter Turkish attacks that was trying to take control of Mosul and its surrounding, which has a big oil field. The Brits wanted to make sure Mosul would be part of Iraq in the future for oil issues (since Iraq was going to be a colonial of Britian.) Chaldean 22:39, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

As stated in the article: Turkey then massed its troops on the border to occupy the Mosul (Nineveh) Province by force. The Assyrian Levy Force of 2000 was sent north to protect Iraq, since the Iraqi army at this time was unfit to undertake such task. The Assyrian force was largely responsible for the annexation of Mosul (Nineveh) to Iraq rather than to Turkey Chaldean 22:53, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

I appreciate your trying to help me understand. The Assyrian issue is very confusing. If you want other people to understand the situation (average people in the world) it would be good to pick out the main points you want to get across and emphasize those. Just a general outline, so people can get the overall picture.

Until I started trying to copy edit this article I had no idea about all this. Then I read your Talk pages and such and see that the issues are very complicated. But for the rest of the world, you want people to know who the Assyrians are, where they are, what they have been promised and why, and what (in general) is the situation now. All the details aren't important in getting across your overall points -- that you want the world to recongnize that the Assyrians are to be considered and treated fairly. Suggestion for move

If you do a google search on "Assyrian administartive" [1], you get more results then "Assyrian indepedence" [2] (and with half of the independence results coming from wiki. What started as an independence movement is now more a battle for self rule, in terms of autonomy. Today, Assyrians in Iraq are actually very patriotic about being Iraqi and they dont really want to split off. The reason for indepedence has been brought up again today is because of the potential of a new Kurdistan state that would incude there land as well. Notice how Assyrians always wave Iraqi flags: [3], [4], [5], [6], [7] So in conclusion, I think the page should be moved to something else, but I really dont know what. So you want to change the title to "Assyrian administrative" (or is it "Assyrian administrative unit")? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, because the article seems to be discussing Assyrian independence (and there has never been an Assyrian administrative unit in place). Title

Assyrian independence has multiple meanings, such as, for instance, the independence of Assyria from the Mitannis, etc. When this was brought up to the League of Nations, they called it the Assyrian Question. — EliasAlucard (talk · contribs) 03:45, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

A single event determines the name of the subject? I can't agree with that. "Assyrian independence" is described what is meant by the title in its first sentence, so I don't know how one would confuse that with indepenence from hte Mitannis. Lebanese Civil War
