Infraspecies
editHi ArthurTheGardener! I was looking at this one that you moved to start class. The infraspecies have not been added yet. There are 17 of them and they need to be listed in the speciesbox as a part of the subdivisions area. The Stub-to-start drive instructions will show you how. You can find the infraspecies on POWO. Could you please add them to the article? Also make sure any other articles you have completed have all of the information from the drive's instructions. It won't take long to get into the rhythm, but I still have to check the list every time for mine! Thanks, Arthur! – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 17:18, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Eewilson, Thank you for pointing that out: I'll get onto it. ArthurTheGardener (talk) 17:28, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Eewilson, I've added the subdivisions to the species box, but it doesn't look right to me. I've never added so many of these before, and it looks decidedly odd. Sorry for being so slow, but what should I have done that I've missed, please? ArthurTheGardener (talk) 18:04, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi ArthurTheGardener! I think it looks close to normal to me. The collapsible list is a good idea. There are two more parameters that need to be filled in. Check the instructions. And the qualifiers such as "var.", "subsp.", etc. are not to be italicized.
- Don't worry about the learning curve. We all had one! You are doing fine. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 22:51, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks once again, @Eewilson. I'll keep checking the instructions. I realise that my memory (as well as my capacity to learn new things) isn't what it used to be! And I'll go over the other pages I've done too, to make sure I haven't missed any subspecies (I've only just realised where to find them, duh). As always, I appreciate your patience and your helpful advice. ArthurTheGardener (talk) 09:42, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
Short description length
editHello, UtherSRG. I see you shortened the short description for this botanical taxon article and placed a reference to wp:SD40 in your change comment. This shortcut points to a subsection on a Wikipedia information page which is not a Wikipedia policy or guideline. If you can direct me to a WP:P&G about short description length, I'd be more than happy to take this to WikiProject Plants. Our project, however, suggests that for taxon articles, we write the type of short descriptions that I'm sure you have seen in many articles. You can find the instructions for plant taxon articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Template#Short description. I don't know that it is productive for us to go back and forth with this. Some of us have discussed this fairly recently in the project and the instructions remain as you will see in the template. Would you please undo your change to this article? – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 18:41, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
- Here's the discussion on why SD's longer than 40 characters are problematical: Wikipedia_talk:Short_description/Archive_12#Reasons_why_SDs_over_40_characters_are_a_problem. Did the project's discussion take this into account? - UtherSRG (talk) 21:48, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
- It's possible, but realistically, it is hard to find embedded within an archive on a talk page. I say again, and in more detail: please refer me to a Wikipedia policy or guideline that would support your changing of short descriptions and implying that they are not allowed to be that long. I will read this talk page link that you sent. Also please refer me to additional discussions and proposals that address short description. Unless there is a policy or guideline, please revert your change to this article. I know you have changed the short description of other articles recently, but I won't address those here since it would be out of scope. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 00:59, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
