Astorga (Spain) → Astorga – no information about the other Astorga, copied from the entry on the WP:RM page

  • Support Make this Astorga; refer to a disambiguation page later if necessary. joturner 19:49, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. I see no reason why the Spanish town would be more important than the Brazil one. Note that the one in Brazil has a higher population. Eugene van der Pijll 23:26, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose, I tend to agree that there's no clear prevalence in this case. —Nightstallion (?) 09:29, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose I don't know who's written this article, buty He (or she) is a blusterer or an ignorant. There are NO MORE than 200 people in Maragatería who can speak Leonese language (so I consider saying "Widely spoken" to be a little highly-coloured). Furthermore, the leonese name of the town is the same as in Castillian, Astorga, not Estorga. The most similar name in history was the middle-age one, (if you want to consider the language spoken then leonese, then we would start another argument), and it was spelled Osterga.

– The primary meaning of Astorga is the Spanish city. No other item on the disambiguation page is known as just "Astorga" besides the Brazilian place, which is not nearly as notable. User:Vivaelcelta changed "Astorga" from a long-standing redirect to the Spanish city recently and has been disambiguating links to it. I am proposing this move as a better solution. If it doesn't have support, then the disambiguation page should be moved to the proposed title (now again a redirect). Srnec (talk) 12:20, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose – the term is ambiguous enough that it should go to a disambig page. I have requested that Srnec's undiscussed move of the disambig page be undone. Dicklyon (talk) 04:34, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
    • It was a redirect to the Spanish city for four years before it was unilaterally converted into a disambiguation page. I restored the status quo and opened this discussion to settle the matter of primary usage. Srnec (talk) 11:29, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
      • You mean in the 4 years since you hijacked it without discussion here? Dicklyon (talk) 14:54, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
        • Didn't even notice that. I only noticed Fae's edit. The only problem with my "hijacking" of 2009 was that I did not put a hatnote to the Paraná city on the this page. This article was unilaterally moved in 2005. Whose unilateral actions should be undone? Txuspe's? Vivaelcelta's? Or only mine?
The term "Astorga" is not remotely ambiguous enough: neither the palace nor the cathedral is ever known as "Astorga"; the diocese and the sports teams from the Spanish city are, I should think obviously, secondary in importance to the city (can you think of a case where a team or diocese based in a city competes with it for primary usage?); Turibius of Astorga is never known as "Astorga". That leaves only the former vice-mayor of Manila and the Brazilian city as competitors for the primary meaning of "Astorga". Given that all other links on the dab page are things in the Spanish city or from there, I think the Spanish city is probably the primary meaning. Srnec (talk) 15:50, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Any additional comments:
We should add the stats for Astorga, Spain and Astorga, since the page view counter counts only the title the page was accessed under and for most of the last 90 days the latter title has redirected to the former (see here). Thus, the page on the Spanish city has approximately 5388 hits [some of those are for the dab page, which would get about 18 a day to judge from the only full day of existence for Astorga (disambiguation)]. All other items on the dab page together have 5115. The Spanish city gets about 40 unambiguous hits a day.
If we exclude those items on the dab page that don't belong per WP:PTM ("a link that merely contains part of the page title, or a link that includes the page title in a longer proper name, where there is no significant risk of confusion")—the cathedral and the palace at least, since they would never be referred to as just "Astorga"—then the total hits of all pages on the dab page is reduced 3,024, which is less than the hits for just Astorga, Spain. So it is "much more likely than any other topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined—to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term" (WP:PTOPIC). It also has "substantially greater enduring notability" than sports teams or religious organizations/buildings located in it, a small place in Brazil or a minor Philippine politician. I think i’m an Astorga

edit

I live in the USA, in Illinois, and my grandfather’s last name is Astorga. Recently, my mom used 23andMe to trace her genetic bloodline to it's origins, and she found the Astorgas. One of the people looked an awful lot like my uncle, and another like my grandfather.

I just have one question though.

My grandparents both come from a semi-remote town in Durango, Mexico called Peña, but are probably of the Astorga bloodline. (My mom is also something like, 60% Spanish) So how did this family of royalty made their way to a basically mountain town? Dontuseurrealname (talk) 19:00, 13 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

My grandfather is also VERY white Dontuseurrealname (talk) 19:01, 13 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
