Merge

I'm not sure, but should the demographic data from Athens-Clarke County (balance), Georgia be merged into this article. I know that Athens and Clarke Co have merged government, so I suppose the above article is the gazeteer-dumped article, but I'm not certain. Anyone know the answer? Sayeth 21:04, Oct 19, 2004 (UTC)

It should be merged. In fact the article needs to be updated and retitled. There is no city of Athens, technically. There is the Athens-Clarke County unified government. The government is commonly referred to as the A-C-C. It is also why the census does not collect data on just Athens, but Athens-Clarke County. For those who are not from Georgia... Georgia has really tiny counties by land area. Smaller then any other state actually and Clarke county is also one of the smaller counties in Georgia, so that is why there is this unique situation where it became Athens-Clarke County rather than a growing city eventually annexing most of the county. Notability

Hi there. With apologies to Modern Skirts (who are all nice guys), and Ruben Kincaid (who I'm sure are great), I do not think either band belongs on a short list of notable Athens bands. Maybe in a few years...but I'm pretty sure they'll be in line behind Pylon, Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, etc, etc. Maybe a better place would be Music_of_Athens,_Georgia? Or perhaps we could start a category of Athens bands? I'm open to discussion... IanRickert 17:38, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Some ~1.5 years later, I think Modern Skirts has grown enough in popularity to be re-mentioned in the notable Athens bands. Just a personal opinion based on my experience of a rise in their popularity outside of Athens. Open to discussion. Caseodilla 07:37, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Pictures?

Photographs of downtown have been added. Perhaps of other neighborhoods later such as Normaltown, Five Points, and out Baxter Avenue and out Prince as well as the University of Georgia campus. Neighborhoods

Would an editor who knows the City please take a look at the additions to the list of neighborhoods. They are all copied from this website. (I have already removed slabs of copyvio text.) As far as I can see they are names of groups of rental properties rather than significant districts. In any case, the content of the articles added is all copyvio as a lift from the same website. Athens, Georgia → Athens-Clarke County, Georgia — As of 1991 Athens, GA does not exist officially, but it became a unified government called the Athens-Clarke County government. To the U.S. Census Bureau and the state of Georgia Clarke County and Athens-Clarke County exist, but not just Athens. Georgia has small counties in land area size and Clarke county is one of the smallest in Georgia, so rather than the previous city annexing most of the county there was a unique situation where the city and county government merged and became one. • Oppose. 1) WP naming conventions favor most common over official names of things, eg the City and County of San Francisco is at San Francisco, California, 2) According to the lead para of the articles, while the governments of the two entities may have merged, the geographic boundaries of the two aren't identical. 3) Consistency with Augusta, Georgia/Richmond County, Georgia, Columbus, Georgia/Muscogee County, Georgia, et al. • Oppose. There is still a place in Georgia called Athens. While that name no longer has any legal meaning, it is still the name used by residents, travelers, the local newspaper, etc. "Athens-Clarke County" is the legal entity, but "Athens" is the name everyone uses. If this were an article about the unified government, then Athens-Clarke would be appropriate, but as this article deals with cultural and other issues, Athens is the correct usage. hello! i just wanted everyone to know that it made a bad impression on me that bubba sparxx was not included in the music of athens section but was instead relegated to the notable people section. we don't want people getting the wrong idea about athens, so i moved his name to the proper section. it wasn't very nice not to include him there considering he is an internationally known musician. if the list is getting out of hand, perhaps it should be merged. i mean, athens does have a great music scene so i am sure there are plenty of other acts not listed.(Rpbyrd3 (talk) 14:43, 22 March 2009 (UTC))

City/County Consolidation

^^^Athens Academy added because the town of Athens recognizes it as an 'Athens school' by inviting students to participate in Youth Leadership Athens alongside Clarke Central and Cedar Shoals students. This same privilege is not extended to schools such as Oconee County High School.

This, however, is irrelevant to being included within Athens. "Invitations" don't change geography.

LMAO, You are saying that because YLA includes AA, that makes AA in Athens? OK then, come back and try to remove Athens Christian and MDCHS as they are not part of YLA

There is a self-evident connection between Athens and Athens Academy. It was located within Athens from 1967 to the early 1970's, and is currently less than a mile from the Athens-Clarke County border. I expect it is still true that the majority of its student body comes from Athens. It seems like the connection is strong enough to not unreasonably merit mentioning a non-profit educational institution closely associated with Athens. Hundreds of businesses move. If it were General Motors, maybe. A school seems a poor candidate. If you are associated with the school to any degreee, it is likely WP:SPAM. Funny how the best school in Athens gets excluded from the list. Why is everyone so sensitive about this issue? I would argue for Prince Avenue being an Athens school. Also, is the new St. Joe's campus on Epps in Clarke or Oconee County? Excuse me. It may be the "best school NOT in Athens." It cannot be in this article because it is not in Athens.

Oconee County part of Athens

I live in Athens, and I never knew Oconee County was not at least part of Athens, because in most cases, Oconee always considers itself the suburbs of Athens. Yes, it is the city-county border of Athens-Clarke County. Being in the suburbs of a town or being in its metropolitan area is not the same thing as being part of the entity itself. LadyofShalott 23:06, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Merge List of People from Athens, Georgia

• Oppose. It is a trivia section anyway and distracts from the city of Athens. The article should be about the city, not the people "from" there. These people have their own articles. • Oppose I think the List of people from Athens, Georgia is far too short to leave as is (currently only two people). It seems some other city articles have a section for this sort of list, but other cities have standalone list articles. I'm not sure if one is officially preferred in the Wikipedia guideline tomes, but I agree with Student7 that a lengthy list detracts from the main article and should be separated.   • Athens currently has 43 people on the list. I checked out a few similarly-populated cities in Georgia. Both Savannah (with about 123) and Macon (with 92) had separate notable people articles, with no list on the main pages. Sandy Springs had no list at all.
