editThe first Auchan in Houston (on Beltway 8 between Bissonnet St and Beechnut St) was there before 1998. It was sometime earlier in the 90s, or maybe even the 80s. Anyone know the exact date of opening?
I used to work in the Auchan in Houston in the late 1980's. The store was opened around 1987 or 1988, I don't remember exactly when as I was in the US Army at the time, but I do remember seeing the store under construction when I would come home to Houston on leave during 1987-1988. I worked at Auchan soon after I got out of the Army in November 1988 as a security associate, then later cahsier. I don't remember the exact dates, but it was from May 1989 to August 1990.
Also, when I was working there during the summer of 1989, a large number of associates there temporarily relocated to Chicago as Auchan was openeing a store there. I don't remember where in Chicago, but it was reported that the store wouldn't be as large as the one in Houston. The associates were gone for around 2 months.
The Chicagoland Auchan was in Bridgeview at 79th & Harlem (IL-43). I clearly remember it from my childhood. It was open for at least a few months sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I also remember xenophobic protesters outside the store calling for a boycott.Kadomony 03:11, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
The Auchan was one of the first stores I remember as containing restaurants inside the store. This Auchan had a McDonald's, Pizza Hut Express, Taco Bell, TCBY Yogurt, and a Take-out Chinese place. The store also had a brach office of NCNB of Texas (later to become Nations Bank, and now Bank of America).
Auchan was also one of the first hypermarket stores. In fact the store's name was Auchan Hypermarket at the time. There was a big to-do in Houston at the time as the concept was a novelty.
I left Houston in Februrary 1999 and the store was still there, but was no longer anywhere near as successful as it was when it first opened. The store had been declining in popularity and quality since the early 1990's. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by {} (talk • contribs)
Now the store is a Vietnamese Grocery Store "Viet Hoa".
