Odin, Odinge
edit- The town was originally named Odingehem, 'home of Odin' ...
What's the source for this etymology? The g bothers me. I'm not aware of any version of the name Odin that has a g (or ŋ). Prima facie it's more likely 'home of the Odings, the descendants or followers of Od'. —Tamfang (talk) 09:08, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
- Dauzat & Rostaing Dictionnaire étymologique des noms de lieux en France (1963) says "from the Germanic personal name Odo or Aldo" (my translation)— and cites a tenth century form Otidinghem, which is not obviously compatible with Odo or Aldo or Odin. On yet another hand, I've heard Dauzat described as "uncritical". —Tamfang (talk) 08:30, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- Eventually it's Odin-gehem and not Odinge-hem? --2A02:2028:135:E381:6409:B814:60E2:60C8 (talk) 07:34, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
