View of El Paso at sunset (c. 1922–1925)

Created by Alan Islas (talk). Self-nominated at 14:23, 8 December 2020 (UTC).Reply

  •   Hi Alan Islas, review follows: article created 7 December; article exceeds minimum length and is well written; article is cited inline throughout to what appear to be reliable sources; I didn't notice any overly close paraphrasing; hook fact is mentioned in the article, cited and confirmed by the source; image is freely licensed, a bit long but works OK at this scale I think. Just awaiting a QPQ for this one and it'll be good to go - Dumelow (talk) 15:14, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'll take a look at this one. Comments to follow over next few days. Zawed (talk) 22:14, 21 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

OK, getting started on this now.

Lead

  • There is a cite in the lead. This shouldn't be necessary since it should be a summary of the body of the article, which should be all cited. See my first bullet point below in the Life and career section. Done
  • Write out the U.S. Done

Life and career

  • Suggest amending the first sentence so that it starts off: "Born in 1875,[cite 1] Audley Dean Nicols..." That will allow you to get rid of the cite in the lead. Done. Same citation at the end of the paragraph.
  • The lead says he was born and raised in Pittsburgh. That is not stated in this section. Added
  • Do we know where in Europe he studied and any influences he picked up there? Could not find any more information about his European studies.
  • Chronologically, the sentence regarding murals in Pittsburgh public buildings seems to belong in the previous paragraph. Same with the portrait of his sister. Rearranged
  • The sentence regarding place of burial is uncited. Done, moved ref to the end to include this sentence.

Style and Legacy

  • (1921-1923) it should be an endash used in this date range. Do you mean in the image caption? Update, saw what you mean. Changed to endash there and in the image caption.
  • I think it would be good to have some commentary on the value of his work. The Texas Paintings website has a little contemporary info on the price of his works but obviously something that reflects current values of his work would be nice. Added information from recent auction results

References

  • The "Internet Archive" can be deleted from cite 1, the url speaks for itself. Ditto cite 10. Done
  • Cite 10 needs a page number. Done
  • The formatting of the newspaper cites are inconsistent. Added missing page number on printed newspaper reference

Other stuff

  • No dupe links
  • The tags on all images bar one check out OK. The exception is the Cave Creek Canyon image; the creator hasn't provided the correct tag for the painting that forms the main part of the image, the tag presently used only applies to the photograph (beautiful landscapes by the way, very atmospheric). Added painting tag to the image in Commons

That's it for now, will check back in a few days. Zawed (talk) 10:44, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Alan Islas, just checking you have seen this? Zawed (talk) 20:02, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sorry Zawed, I hadn't seen it, thanks for the ping and for the review. I will start working on it right away. Alan Islas (talk) 20:53, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi Zawed, I believe I have gone through all your notes, for whenever you can have a look. Thanks again! Alan Islas (talk) 13:48, 27 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
This is looking in good shape, the extra information regarding sales prices is helpful. There appears to be a misunderstanding regarding the formatting of the newspaper cites as they appear in the references though. Some have the date bracketed, some don't. Also if you know Mary Nicols maiden name, add it in on first mention e.g. Mary Nicols née example. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 11:10, 28 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Zawed. Added spouse's maiden name. About the formatting of newspaper cites, I realize that the "cite news" template automatically puts the date in brackets when there is an author name included, so as you say it looks different vs newspaper cites that do not have a named author. I don't know how to change this, please let me know if you have any suggestions. --Alan Islas (talk) 14:04, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ah yes, of course, I had forgotten that. Don't have any solutions short of removing the author, which I would be loathe to do. Zawed (talk) 21:57, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I did some more copyediting and a bit of rewriting, hopefully for the better! Alan Islas (talk) 14:37, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
This looks good. I am passing as GA as I believe that it meets the necessary criteria. It was a pleasure working with you on this, great work! Zawed (talk) 21:59, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Likewise, a pleasure working with you. Thanks! :) Alan Islas (talk) 03:57, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
