Re-merge of Austin and Austin (surname)
editI suggest these two DAB pages, which were split last September with no discussion or consensus, be re-merged.
- Austin (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Austin (surname) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- There's no compelling reason for them to be separate. The pages aren't that long, and lend themselves to being well-organized. There was no discussion or consensus to split the pages.
- Having them split serves no purpose. Anyone looking for someone with a surname "Austin" is going to start here on than "Austin" page, rather than looking for a page name "Austin (surname)." And the link to "Austin (surname)" is subtly stuck in the middle of the page here. Having them split just makes it harder on Wikipedia users.
- It's even mixed up as it stands. The surname page has links on it about Austin as a given name, e.g., the table on populariy, and the suggestion of Augustine.
- Most of the reverts of good-faith edits here on the Austin page are of editors adding in people with the surname Austin here rather than on the Austin (surname) page. If editors are confused by this, you can bet the non-editing readership is.

- Update: As there has been a page move, the current proposal would entail remerging Austin (disambiguation) and Austin (surname). --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 21:16, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Should Austin redirect to Austin, Texas ?
editAustin, Texas is the 16th-largest in the United States of America, as well as the third fastest growing large city in the nation from 2000 to 2006. Shouldn't that make it the main page for Austin, with a hatnote redirecting to Austin (disambiguation)? --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 01:40, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- I am performing this move per WP:BOLD. — C M B J 20:52, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
- Considering how many different cities, companies and people Austin can refer to, I believe Austin should have remained a disambiguation page. Marshall Stax (talk) 15:15, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with Marshall Stax. There's enough ambiguity about "Austin" that it should point to the DAB page. It is not universally referent to the Texas city. TJRC (talk)
Austin & Macauley
editIP editor 80.176.72.212 keeps adding:
- Austin & Macauley, a book publisher based in the UK
to this page. This appears to be a non-notable entity, and the IP editor's only edits [1] are to add this companies name to articles. I am again deleting it, and suggest that it be re-added if and when an article is made for the company. TJRC (talk) 21:55, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Austin (disambiguation) → Austin – Following on from Talk:Charlotte#Requested move 6 December 2023 the city in Texas doesn't appear to be the clear primary topic for "Austin". The one in Texas has 61,701 views but the album has 9,594, Austin Motor Company has 5,582, the Chicago one has 4,681 and the Minnesota one has 2,987. Augustine of Hippo has 65,681 and Augustinians has 5,102[[2]]. Austin Butler has 160,186, Austin Swift has 113,292, Austin Reaves has 102,029, Austin Rivers has 33,013, Austin Pendleton has 25,165, Auston Matthews has 23,060 and Austin St. John has 21,934[3]]. Tavon Austin has 41,890 and Coco Austin has 29,570[[4]]. The last 2 lists are PTMs but do seem to point to the fact that "Austin" is a common given and surname. Since its common use to treat the state as part of the name per WP:USPLACE it means many readers and editors will expect the city to be at "Austin, Texas" rather than "Austin". While in America the Texas city may be the primary topic I think in other countries like England people would expect the motor company or name. The DAB page was at the base name until 2008, see Talk:Austin (disambiguation)#Should Austin redirect to Austin, Texas ? but in reply it was pointed out its a common name. At Talk:Austin, Texas/Archive 2#Requested move in 2010 the RM was no consensus partly because some people thought the DAB page should be moved to the base name instead. There was also a similar Talk:Austin, Texas/Archive 2#Requested move 20 July 2017. There was also a comment at Talk:Austin, Texas/Archive 2#Not the only important Austin in the world that the city is not the primary topic. This was also mentioned at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names)/Archive 5#Proposal: Remove WP:USPLACE from subpages about the DAB being moved to the base name. This would also in any case make the debate about if the state qualifier is needed moot as was noted in the 2010 RM. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:22, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

- Support per nom. No way the city is the primary topic internationally. The car manufacturer would be the clear primary topic in the UK, for instance. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:59, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
- The city's name derives from Stephen F. Austin which points to long-term significance for the surname. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:00, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
- There are many primary topics with names derived from other topics that have articles. There's not much to draw from that detail. Regardless, I have no opinion about this specific proposed move. older ≠ wiser 18:33, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
