Efficiency, ring configuration questions
editSome questions should be answered:
- Austin transformers have no iron core, while other types for 50/60 Hz AC have. How big is their efficiency?
- Some types of Austin transformers consist of rings in an angle of 90 degree ( like [1] or [2] this is obviously the most common design, others not ( picture on http://www.hawkins.pair.com/nss.shtml ). Why look they so different?

Full-load efficiency (Austin ring transformers are always operated at full load) is about 90%.

Full-load efficiency of ferrous-core transformers ranges from awful to 99%.

As for why the transformer shown looks so different, keep in mind that it is serial Number 001 -- I would guess that they improved he design later.
