GA?

edit

This article would get pummelled if the reviewer came straightaway, as it only covers the last ten years and hardly has any prose. Eg, in the old days there was an Australian baseball team although it was only chosen like an "All-Australian team" and didn't generally compete, but Neil Harvey was in one of them. For a guide, see Indian cricket team although that was delisted because of rising standards. Also I will fix the dashes for you, they are needed in numbers YellowMonkey (cricket photo poll!) paid editing=POV 01:36, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Baseball in Australia says that Australia competed in the 1970s YellowMonkey (cricket photo poll!) paid editing=POV 01:52, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

History

edit

Anyone got some history books on the team? There isn't that much information on the ABF website, but I have a Queensland Baseball History book that may help JRA_WestyQld2 Talk 08:45, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've managed to source a book from Amazon that seems pretty good, not specifically for Australian baseball or the national team, but for international baseball in general. Records for World Cups, Intercontinental Cups, various continent-level tournaments, and records for national/regional competitions as well (though I'm not sure how much detail there'll be for that level). Once I get that it should provide more info for this article, particularly for the Asian/Oceania Championships, that sort of thing.  Afaber012  (talk)  01:49, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

This article is in decent shape, but it needs more work before it becomes a Good Article.

  1. Is it reasonably well written?
    A. Prose quality:
In the World Baseball Classic section, this sentence ---> "Australia has competed in both of the World Baseball Classic tournaments held", reads a little odd. In the 2006 section, "The Dominican Republic and Venezuela both have strong baseball traditions", what kind of traditions?
    Check.
    B. MoS compliance:
In the lead, "They are currently the top team in Oceania [...] They are currently the eleventh ranked mens baseball team [...] the Baseball World Cup and most recently the World Baseball Classic (WBC) [...] Australia recently contested the 2009 World Youth Baseball Championship in August", you might want to remove "currently" and "recently" per WP:DATED. Maybe adding the year in "3 September" in the Current roster section. Same section, "Assistant Coach", I don't think the "C" in coach is supposed to be capitalized. In the World ranking section, it would be best if "International Baseball Federation" was followed by ---> (IBAF), I mean, I know what it means, but how 'bout your reader. Do the same with "World Baseball Classic" (WBC) in the former section. In the Olympic Games section, link "United States" once. In the World Cup section, link "IBAF" once.
  2. Is it factually accurate and verifiable?
    A. References to sources:
In Reference 33, "SMH" needs to be "Sydney Morning Herald" and needs to be italicized, since it's a newspaper. References 39, 46, and 47 are missing Publisher info.
    B. Citation of reliable sources where necessary:
In the Major world championships section, is there a source for this ---> "There are currently three recognised tournaments that are considered "major" by the IBAF: the World Baseball Classic, the Summer Olympic Games and the Baseball World Cup. Of those, the Summer Olympics will be phased out of the rankings structure, as baseball will no longer be contested as an Olympic event"? Is there a source available for the second paragraph of the World Baseball Classic section? In the Olympics section, is there a source for this ---> "Australia is the only country to have hosted an Olympic baseball tournament as a medal sport, to have won an Olympic medal, and to have done so in separate years. It was the host in 2000 and won silver in 2004. Australia is also one of only two countries—the other is the United States—to have hosted baseball events as both a non-medal and medal sport"? Are there sources available for the Minor world championships, Continental tournaments, and Asian Baseball Championship sections?
    C. No original research:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. Major aspects:
    B. Focused:
  4. Is it neutral?
    Fair representation without bias:
In the World ranking section, this ---> "The next opportunities for the Australian team to improve their ranking will be at the 2009 World Youth Baseball Championship to be held in August and the 2009 Baseball World Cup to be held in September", reads like POV. In the World Baseball Classic section, "Unusual for international competition in baseball", POV. In the 2006 section, this seems like POV, "Thus, Australia was considered the underdog in the pool", but is a source available for this? If so, add it.
  5. Is it stable?
    No edit wars, etc:
  6. Does it contain images to illustrate the topic?
    A. Images are copyright tagged, and non-free images have fair use rationales:
    B. Images are provided where possible and appropriate, with suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
If the statements above can be answered, I will pass the article. Good luck with improving this article!

Thanks for doing the review.
1A:
  • Changed the WBC sentance with: 'Australia has competed in both editions of the World Baseball Classic.'
  • Replaced the traditions sentance with: 'Of players born outside the United States on 2006 Major League Openning Day rosters, the Dominican Republic (85) and Venezuela (43) had the more than all other countries and between them accounted for more than 57% of foreign-born players in the leagues.' and cited a source for the statement.
    • Check.
1B:
  • Removed 'currently' and 'recently' from lead
  • Added '2009' to the date in Current roster
  • 'Assistant Coach' - I checked WP:MOS#Titles of people, and from what I can work out, because its the title for those people it should be capitalised, whereas if there was a statement along the lines of "Past assistant coaches have included..." would be where it shouldn't be capitalised.
  • Abbreviations - WP:MOS#Acronyms and abbreviations says that the "International Baseball Federation (IBAF)" part should be at the first instance in the article, then the abbreviation itself used in the rest of the article. The IBAF and WBC abbreviations are both used in the second paragraph of the lead, so that would seem to be correct.
  • Double-linking - removed the stated double-linking
    • Check.
2A:
  • SMH ref updated
  • 39, 46 & 47 added publisher. (Now moved to 40, 47 & 48)
    • Check.
2B:
  • Major world championships - added a source for each of the two statements
  • World Baseball Classic - added source for second paragraph
  • I'm not aware of a single source that backs up the assertion of the paragraph highlighted in the Olympic Games section. I could probably track down sources for the individual elements. Does something along the lines of One source states "A causes B". Another states "B causes C". Logically A causes C, but there's no source available to confirm it. count as original research? Should I actually remove that paragraph?
  • I've removed that paragraph. There wasn't really a source to back it up, and it really a piece of trivial information that'd appear in a sidebar box in a book. If I stumble accross a source for it I might put it back in, but I'm not expecting to.  Afaber012  (talk)  05:56, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Sorted out refs for Minor world championships, Continental tournaments & Asian Baseball Championship
    • Check.
4:
  • Removed statement from World ranking section
  • In the World Baseball Classic section, I'm not exactly sure how the statement you've highlighted is POV. International baseball tournaments and competitions rarely have active Major Leaguers. The following sentance in that section explains why its unusual. I'm open to suggestions. I think its something that's applicable, and so something along the lines of what's there should be there.
  • Added source for 2006 section's underdog statement
    • Check.
I'm going to get to the other bits over the next couple of days, possibly even just later today (its about 11:30am as I write this here). I've had a quick look through the comments and they all seem reasonable, though I might want to discuss a couple of them.  Afaber012  (talk)  08:15, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
When you get all the concerns, please let me know. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 17:08, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've got those last couple of things sorted out now, so should be all good now.  Afaber012  (talk)  05:56, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome for the review, just doing my job. I would like to thank Afaber for getting the stuff I left at the talk page, because I have gone off and placed the article as GA. Congrats. ;) --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 20:40, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Roster

edit

Is there any reason why the roster just pasted on this page instead of a template?

Also would it be worthwhile having a page with current and past rosters eg Australia national baseball team rosters, just to stop the rosters template at the bottom of the page getting too bloated and also somewhere to list historic rosters? --Dan027 (talk) 11:49, 20 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I haven't made it a template only because it doesn't get used anywhere else. I don't have a problem with it being a template.
In terms of the current and past rosters page idea, would a List of Australia national baseball team players page be better? Olympic and WBC players shouldn't be too difficult to compile, but it'll be the older World Cup, Intercontinental Cup and regional rosters that'll be trickier to track down I'm guessing. The list (or lists if we break it down by tournament) would go along with the various lists of Australian cricketers (Test, ODI, T20, Captains) and of rugby league and union players.  Afaber012  (talk)  23:15, 22 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah i think the List of Australia national baseball team players would be the better option, i have found some old Baseball Australia annual reports online that have some team lists in them also. Annual reports, i think ive come across the missing ones from that list but cant find the link at the moment. --Dan027 (talk) 07:08, 23 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Looks like those reports might be useful for creating some of the missing Claxton Shield articles as well! Nice work in finding them!  Afaber012  (talk)  23:10, 23 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
