New names

edit

On 3 May 2013, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Defence issued a media release stating that two Australian intelligence agencies would be renamed in line with recommendation with the 2013 Defence White Paper.

  • The Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) would become the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD)
  • The Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation (DIGO) would become the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO)

The release indicated that legislation would be brought forward to amend the Intelligence Services Act 2001 to enact the renaming of the agencies. Amendments to the Act were enacted on 28 May but the agencies as referenced in the Act have retained their old names. Is there any legislative or gazetted reference that the name change has occurred? The best I can find is references to the new names in position vacant ads and some other government material. --Canley (talk) 23:56, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Change of DSD to ASD Not Official So Far

edit

The proposed change of the name of DSD to ASD does not appear to have been passed by the Australian Parliament. It may be simply that with the distraction of the Second Rudd Government there was not time to put the legislation to Parliment.

I assumed the change had happened as Dr John Blaxland mentioned it in his presentation "The emergence of the Australian Intelligence Community". My apologies about changing the DSD entry without verification.
