Race?

The article says: "For instance, African Americans appear to present with a more aggressive disease that is associated with worse outcomes"

There is no race of being African American, it is a courtesy title brought into use to avoid the less appetising terms for this very broad grouping of peoples from many parts of Africa. When we speak of disease and race we need to avoid semantic gymnastics and deal with the true underlying race.

Why?

WikiMedicine Project

Hello! I'm a 4th year medical student working on the article as part of a WikiProject Medicine class. I would like to update this page with more current information regarding guidelines, pathophysiology, treatment, and prognosis.

I propose a few changes below:

• Lead paragraph – update the lead to include more language about potential symptoms, evaluation and diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis
• Signs and symptoms – expand the section regarding physical exam findings and general difficulty in determining this disease due to its overlap with many other causes of hepatitis
• Causes – discuss the genetic predisposition and accompanying triggers that may lead to the development of the disease
• Mechanism – potentially omit this section or combine with Causes since it requires the aforementioned explanation about immunologic processes
• Diagnosis - discuss the criteria for diagnosis based on current guidelines as well as the need to exclude other causes of hepatitis such as viral, drug-induced, alcoholic injury
• Prevention or Screening – potentially mention that as an autoimmune disease, difficult to avoid its development
• Treatment – clean up section for grammar, introduce new guidelines or treatments available within the last couple of years or currently being researched
• Outcomes or Prognosis – expand on morbidity and mortality with new figures
• Epidemiology - update figures with current data regarding incidence and demographics
• Research direction – current research being done on the disease

Overall, this was a fantastic job improving the article and adding comprehensive content! Recommend the following:

Lead paragraph – I really liked the addition of alternative names of the conditions in the introduction, along with symptoms. Recommend moving 2nd paragraph on pathophysiology of disease to the cause section to improve organization
Signs and symptoms- Recommend including additional hyperlinks to the signs and symptoms to further facilitate reader understanding. Citations appropriate
Causes – Great job consolidating the causes and mechanism sections together for improved organization. Recommend moving second paragraph of introduction to this section (information regarding the MHC class II receptors). Recommend adding hyperlinks to HLA-DR3 and HLA-DR4 to allow readers to learn more about their role in disease. Citations in this section are high quality and appropriate
Diagnosis – Excellent job adding information on diagnostic criteria, scoring, and classification. Differential diagnosis was comprehensive, yet readable. Recommend adding histologic images to the histology sub-section
Treatment- My favorite part of the article! I really enjoyed reading about current treatment options, along with the future direction of treatment. Citations high quality and appropriately sourced. Recommend adding images of liver biopsy findings.
Prognosis – Appears correct and consistent with most recent literature. Does not require further improvement, but may benefit from additional content on comorbidity
Epidemiology – incidence and demographic information appears consistent with recent epidemiological data. Citations are appropriate and high quality
