Talk:Automotive industry in Russia

Currently there is this general navtemplate, which includes the Russian car manufacturers:

I think, however, there is some point in creating a separate Template:Automotive industry of Russia, which will include both Russian manufacturers and Russian automobile brands. GreyHood Talk 20:41, 12 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I agree. The first row is pretty crowded anyway, so it would be good to split. Offliner (talk) 12:23, 13 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Number of employees

edit

The only figure I could find about the number of employees in the industry is from 2005. Presumably, the number has risen a lot since then. Do you happen to know a newer number? Offliner (talk) 12:25, 13 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

This source says 370,000 in 2009, down 24% from 2008.
This source says 2.5 million are employed in the automotive industry and affiliated industries. GreyHood Talk 21:43, 13 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

To do

edit

The article has improved a lot recently, but I'd still like to do a few things before it gets to main page (via WP:DYK).

  • Write a list (or preferably prose) of the most popular Russian models
  • Integrate GAZ into the key companies section (looks like it's main business these days is vans, trucks, buses, etc. instead of passenger cars?)
  • Insert info about AvtoVAZ and GAZ joint ventures with foreign companies?
  • Write something about production of buses, tractors, special vehicles, etc. Mention at least the largest companies making these products.
  • Expand "economic significance" section. Nanobear (talk) 08:27, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Scope

edit

I'm somewhat unsure about the scope of this article - does "automotive industry" include the production of tractors and other heavy machinery that moves on wheels or tracks? If yes, lots of the machine building sector could be included here. Or perhaps we need a separate Machine building in Russia article? Nanobear (talk) 11:01, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

According to the article ru:Машиностроение in ru-wiki, "tractor building" and "automobile building" are two different branches of "middle machine building", while large heavy machinery that moves on wheels is a part of "heavy machine building". So I think the scope of this article is good enough, and the tractor industry in Russia should either have its own article or should be included into the article about machine building in Russia. bad approximation

edit

It is stated more than once that Russia is the 15th car producer and responsible for 7% of the world production. It suggests that world production is at least 105%. Now, of course I can understand it is a approximation, but the result is still not as clear as it could be. Moreover, the source is broken. Frohfroh (talk) 22:11, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm going to strike the last line from the lede. Since it's pretty much unreliable and bogus. According to RT's projections from July 2013, Russia will probably be Europe's largest car market by 2016, and be one of the global leading players in 2020. In 2012 Russia was the 7th largest market, behind Germany (5th) as the leader in European car market by 2012.
However, the EAS and KPMG's Global Automotive Retail Market (Sept. 2013), confirm, that Russia probably going to be by 2016 the largest car market in Europe, as the Study forecast. JestersTM (talk) 12:54, 20 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
