Pronounciation

edit

Collins English Dictionary (6 ed, 2003) suggests the first syllable as in 'pave'. mat_x 19:30, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Nevertheless, the traditional local pronunciation "A'bury" is supported by phonetic "mis"spellings as far back as John Aubrey. --Wetman 08:28, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Spelling

edit

Is the name West Kennett in the first paragraph an alternative spelling for the placename or an error? LouisBB (talk) 22:17, 22 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

As is noted in the final paragraph of the "History" section, "The name of the settlement is always spelt with two 't's whilst the archaeological sites are generally spelt with one."

Many thanks. We better not hide this information. LouisBB (talk) 13:25, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Now that I put a note in the article, following which I re-read the Avebury article, where we specify the location by the mention of the River Kennet and the Upper Kennet Valley, both with single "t"-s, I am not so sure. It would be desirable to be consistent within the same sphere of intrerest. LouisBB (talk) 13:49, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I agree, it would be desirable - but, like Tonbridge and its neighbour, Tunbridge Wells, the reality is that the two are spelt differently. However, you're right about the fact that the information about West Kennet(t)'s spelling was rather hidden away right down at the bottom - your edit to move it to the top of the page is definitely an improvement ~dom Kaos~ (talk) 19:43, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Odd that there is no mention of the fact that Avesbury is mentioned in the Domesday Book; this means the modern settlement existed at least as early as the 11th century. Further, since the English Place-Name Society has published a volume on Wiltshire, there is a reliable source about origins of this name -- whether Anglo-Saxon or perhaps Celtic. -- llywrch (talk) 18:07, 21 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
