Proposed article expansion
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hi there. I'd like to introduce myself to any editors who may be watching this page: I'm working on behalf of BNY Mellon to identify areas for improvement in this article and I'll be making suggestions here on the Talk page for others to review. My goals as of now are to fill in some missing details in the History section and bring it up-to-date, and to expand the Operations section, which is currently quite short and lacks sufficient information about the bank's businesses and leadership.
To begin, I'd like to propose changes to the History section. Over the past few weeks, I have put together a much-expanded version of the section. This new version is organized in the same way as before, except it places all post-merger details under a new Recent history subheading.
My draft stays close to the existing wording in the Bank of New York and Mellon Financial subsections, which generally did not need much in the way of improvement. I did condense and summarize some details though, such as acquisitions, in order to save space. The major changes are to the Merger and Recent history subsections. In the former, I trimmed out operational information that better fits under Operations. The latter is a new section with details about the bank's activities since 2008, many of which are not yet covered by the article. I should also note that I removed three items that didn't seem particularly significant in the company's overall history. In the case that other editors may feel strongly about them, I've listed them below:
- The 2009 data spill (this item also had a broken link as its source)
- The commemorative video the bank released for its 225th anniversary
- Nelson Peltz pressuring the bank to improve pre-tax margins.
I used sourcing currently in the article wherever possible, except in cases where the source no longer existed or I found a reputable source with more detailed or specific information. All other sources are from independent third parties.
You can find this alternative draft here: User:Heatherer/Bank_of_New_York_Mellon_History.
I welcome comments and any other feedback editors have about the draft. My aim was to prepare a draft that's neutral and consistent with Wikipedia's guidelines and policies, and I'm open to making changes to get it there. To be clear, I won't be making any direct edits to the article due to my financial conflict of interest. If the draft appears to be an improvement over the current version, I will be looking for help placing it in the live article. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 18:23, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- Done - great job!--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:01, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
Most recent changes
There was an implementation of well-cited and well-written article content from the request edit in the previous section, followed by the content being overwritten by some of the previous content and additional content that was not cited and not as well written.
What was the objective of reverting the content and adding additional uncited content?--CaroleHenson (talk) 11:22, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
- Ahh, I just realized that there were two essentially parallel paths for updating and citing this this March 3 version of the article. Heatherer posted the request with her (I assume it's a female) draft that she posted to her sandbox about 15 minutes before you started your draft on the 20th. And then you did a lot of work on the 20th with these edits. Wow! The stars were definitely in alignment to work on improving the article!
- Then, I implemented the sandbox draft and made some edits in these edits. That makes it a bit complicated to sort out the two versions to get the best cited content from the two versions, but I will take a look at it.
- It looks like you both have put a lot of hard work into this and we wouldn't want to look the sum of that combined, but separate effort!!!--CaroleHenson (talk) 11:53, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
- Here's the summary as I see it:
- Intro - only difference was a direct link vs. a redirect - fixed
- History - Looking at this version: Some of the citations are dead links, or seem to be geneology sources. The information is out of chronological order, and there are duplicate bits of information because its out of order. See the first two paragraphs and the first sentence of the third paragraph. But, there is worthy information if it can be properly sources and ordered:
- There are better sources in the current version for this: "The Bank of New York was founded by Alexander Hamilton on June 9, 1784, in the old Walton Mansion in New York City."
- To pick up on the point below, no change or addition of sources is needed for the current version.--CaroleHenson (talk) 14:22, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
- "The President of the new bank was former Major General Alexander McDougall, with William Winston Seaton as the Chief Cashier." - Have a good source?
- A good source was added.--CaroleHenson (talk) 14:22, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
- "The bank was founded in 1784 by a series of documents drawn up by Alexander Hamilton.[7]" - how does this add anything to the already stated: "The Bank of New York was founded by Alexander Hamilton on June 9, 1784...?"
- "The Bank was first able to procure a charter on May 2, 1791.[7]" - There's a good source (vs. dead link) for this in the current version - and it's grouped with the date founded, for relevancy.
- The charter was renewed several times until the era of free banking, when in 1852, it was officially recognized under Banking Law as a bank having a capital of US$2,000,000.[7] Following the instigation of the National Banking Act, the Bank of New York in 1865 was once again chartered, this time as a National Bank via the act.[7] - also added with dead link, have a good source? I get that this is informative detail, but I wonder how many people will be interested in this?
- This NYC-Architecture source was used for this already well-cited sentence: "The bank's holding company was created in 1969.[9]" - but it's not applicable. It's also not applicable to this sentence: "It was instrumental in the growth and expansion of the Bank of New York outside of New York City.[6]" - I'm confused.
- "After the deal, the bank stopped doing retail banking" was reworded from "The deal signaled the bank's exit from retail banking." It seems the latter makes more sense to follow "In 2006, the Bank of New York traded its retail banking and regional middle-market businesses for J.P. Morgan Chase's corporate trust assets."
- There are better sources in the current version for this: "The Bank of New York was founded by Alexander Hamilton on June 9, 1784, in the old Walton Mansion in New York City."
- Mellon Financial
- The first two sentence were reworded from one sentence, no big deal either way, I think.
- "The former Judge Thomas Mellon decided to retire as President of the firm in 1886 to be succeeded by his son, Andrew.[20]" - I cannot read the 1934 article, but I AGF that it covers the 1886 switch.
- Added to the article.--CaroleHenson (talk) 14:22, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
- This excite.com careers link was added in a citation with a title "Mellon Financial Corporation Profile". to the already well-cited: "In 1902, T. Mellon & Sons' name was changed to the Mellon National Bank." I'm confused.
- This uncited content was added, have a source? "In 1920, Andrew left his leadership post of the bank to become the longest serving U.S. Treasury Secretary in history (serving under three separate administrations). In 1929, Richard founded Mellbank Corporation. In 1946, Mellon National, Mellbank, and the Union Trust Company merged to form Mellon National Bank and Trust Company."
- Is there a source for this: "In 1983, Mellon bought Girard Bank of Philadelphia and Central Counties Bank of State College, Pennsylvania and the next year, Mellon National Corporation became Mellon Bank Corporation, and purchased Northwest Pennsylvania Corporation of Oil City, Pennsylvania. In 1986, Mellon bought Commonwealth National Financial of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and in 1991, added United Penn Bank of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania."
- There was a good citation for this that was removed: "In 1993, Mellon acquired The Boston Company from American Express and AFCO Credit Corporation from The Continental Corporation. The following year, Mellon merged with the Dreyfus Corporation, bringing its mutual funds under its umbrella."
- There's a typo for the citation, which I assume covers this: " In 1997, Mellon purchased United Bankshares, Inc., of Miami, 1st Business Bank of Los Angeles, and Founders Asset Management.ref name=RefForBiz/>"
- Do you have sources for this
- In 1999, Martin G. McGuinn became chairman and chief executive officer of Mellon Bank Corporation and Mellon Bank Corporation became Mellon Financial Corporation. Two years later, it exited the retail banking business by selling the assets and retail bank branches to Citizens Financial Group, which stripped the long-standing Mellon Bank name from locations across Pennsylvania and Delaware and rebranded them as Citizens Bank.ref name=RefForBiz/> In 2004, Mellon announced it would purchase Safeco Trust Company from Seattle-based Safeco Corporation. The same year, it purchased outstanding shares in London-based Pareto Partners and offered them floor space in Mellon Financial (opened earlier in the year).
- which was reworded from this cited sentence?
- In 1999, Mellon Bank Corporation became Mellon Financial Corporation. Two years later, it exited the retail banking business by selling its assets and retail bank branches to Citizens Financial Group.[18]
- Merger- looks to be the same, the numbering is off, but that's because of different sources used above.
- Recent history - looks to be the some, except one paragraph broken into two.
- Operations - look to be the same
- Business segments - looks to be the same, still needing citations
- Competition - looks to be the same
- Here's the summary as I see it:

Besides, it was added where it wasn't needed.
- Then, it was used for "The President of the new bank was former Major General Alexander McDougall, with William Winston Seaton as the Chief Cashier.<ref name="USG"/>" Surely, there are books, newpapers and other reliable sources. If not, then, it shouldn't be added.
- I'll see if I can find a source for McDougall and Seaton. In the meantime, I made image changes and changed the about-->for statement as you had edited.--CaroleHenson (talk) 13:55, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Operations request
Hi User: CaroleHenson and Epicgenius! Thank you both for all your effort here and spending time sorting this out. It's fantastic this article is getting so much attention! I realize I'm jumping in late and I apologize for not being available sooner. I'll be much speedier addressing future replies. Please let me know if there are sections or items you'd like me to look into. Everything is looking quite good so far, but I'm happy to find new sources or compare versions. In addition, I've prepared a new draft for the Operations section. Would you like me to upload that to my userspace now or share it once History is sorted out? I'm hoping we can collaborate there as well. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 18:48, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
- Heatherer If you could upload it to your user page, that would be great! I can take a look at it there. Epicgenius, too, if he/she wishes.--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:37, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
- I'll take a look at it. Good work so far! Epic Genius (talk) 13:47, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- Epicgenius, It's at User:Heatherer/Bank of New York Mellon Operations. Since you've been very involved in this article, if you want to take the first pass, feel free.--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:59, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- Heatherer, Here's the sum of the edits made by Epicgenius and me so far: to the draft. There weren't any substantive changes, just minor copy edits and addition of an {{As of}} tag. If you're good with the changes, and Epic genius and anyone else that would like to weigh-in, I can move them to article space. I added a {{request edit}} tag to this section so that your request is tracked on the request edit worklist until it's resolved (i.e., doesn't fall off my radar). Please let me know if you have any comments or questions about the changes.--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:25, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- Heatherer, I didn't see any further issues, so I went ahead and made the change. It seemed that business segments was no longer needed, so I removed that, but please let me know if that was intended to stay. There is also a uncited "Competition" section remaining.--CaroleHenson (talk) 02:32, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, CaroleHenson! I think all of the changes look good, including removing the Business segments section. I'll start a new section below to address the Competition section and one more edit request I have. Heatherer (talk) 20:46, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
Introduction request and Competition section
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
For anyone new to the page, I am working on behalf of BNY Mellon to draft improvements and make suggestions for this article. I have just one additional update that can be made to the introduction. The first sentence of the second paragraph should have numbers from the most recent 10-K. Here's that markup if anyone has time to make the change:
- The company has US$1.7 trillion in [[assets under management]] and US$28.5 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration thereby being the largest [[Custodian bank|deposit bank]] in the world.<ref name= "Bank-of-New-York-Mellon-Feb-2015-10-K"/>
On another note, what are others' thoughts about the Competition section? On the one hand, as CaroleHenson pointed out above, it is unsourced. On the other, I have seen similar sections elsewhere that are also unsourced, like a See also section. I don't have a strong opinion about removing or keeping it, but I would suggest cleaning up some of the names if kept. A few of them appear to be smaller software companies that don't seem like major competitors in the way that big financial institutions such as State Street Corporation or JPMorgan Chase are. My recommendation would be to include some or all of the following: Barclays, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Northern Trust, and State Street Corporation. Interested to hear what CaroleHenson, Epicgenius, or any other editors think! Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 20:55, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
- I think that the unsourced "Competitors" sections in both articles can be removed. It singles out certain major banks and, unless sources are found to established all listed banks as competitors, including only some of these banks generally shouldn't merit inclusion unless a reliable source can be provided. Epic Genius (talk) 21:02, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
- That's reasonable. A comprehensive list of all of BNY Mellon's competitors would be very long and I don't think it necessarily adds much to the article anyway. Unless there are any other perspectives, do you want to remove it? Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 22:56, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, @Heatherer and Epicgenius: makes sense to me, too - particularly because it's uncited. I removed that section and made the update to the introduction. -CaroleHenson (talk) 23:09, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Nowiki tag on article
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hi there. It looks like Spencer loggia added nowiki tags to the article. I'm going to assume this was a mistake, but it needs to be reverted as it is making the article unreadable. Would someone be able to do that? Due to my COI, I'd like to avoid making any edits. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 13:24, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Done, and replied at the help desk. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 16:46, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
Date of founding in "predecessor" section
This is unnecessary and confusing. There are two dates for the predecessors' foundations, but only the oldest is listed. Therefore, I've removed it. Epic Genius (talk) 18:03, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
- The date for the "predecessor" parameter in J.P. Morgan Chase should probably also be removed, on that note, unless all predecessor companies' founding dates are listed as well. Epic Genius (talk) 19:03, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
Updates and article maintenance
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hi there. Earlier this year I worked with volunteer editors to make some major revisions to this article. I'm back with a handful of routine updates based on recent coverage. While they are straightforward, I won't make any direct edits due to my conflict of interest. As I mentioned then, I am working on behalf of BNY Mellon. Would someone be willing to take a look at my suggestions and edit the page if the changes seem reasonable? I've broken them out below.
- Updating the assets under management and assets under custody and/or administration in three sections:
- Introduction: Can we update the numbers to say BNY Mellon has US$1.72 trillion in assets under management and US$28.6 trillion assets under custody and/or administration[1]?
- Assets under management can also be updated in the Investment management section, saying BNY Mellon had $1.72 trillion as of the end of June 2015[1]
- Under Investment services, assets under custody or administration can be updated to $28.6 trillion as of the end of June 2015[1]
- Two updates to the Recognition and rankings section:
- I'm also wondering if it is possible to update the last sentence of the Business subsection. The company recently released new figures through its Corporate Social Responsibility report. I understand if it is best to wait until the figures are reported by a third-party source, but I thought I'd ask editors to consider it. The updated sentence would read: The company also serves 75 percent of the top 100 endowments, 67 percent of the top 1,000 pension and employee benefit funds, 50 percent of the top 200 life and health insurance companies and 46 percent of the top 50 universities.Cite error: The
<ref>
tag has too many names (see the help page).
Let me know if there are any questions or concerns about these changes—I appreciate any help. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 20:20, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

- Hi Stickee! Thanks for making the changes! I forgot to watchlist the page (oops!), so I just noticed your note. It looks like the only part of my request that's left is the addition of "BNY Mellon was named the "best place for female technologists" by the Anita Borg Institute in April 2015". Just curious if there is a reason you didn't want to add that in? Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 18:30, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
It looks like Stickee is busy elsewhere, so I'm re-adding a {{request edit}} template here to flag the one small addition I'm asking about that's remaining. It's a small addition regarding an award that BNY Mellon received this year:
- BNY Mellon was named the "best place for female technologists" by the Anita Borg Institute in April 2015[1]
If this seems reasonable, can someone add this into the article for me? Also, just to note again, I am making this request as a paid consultant to BNY Mellon, so I do have a conflict of interest and won't be editing the article. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 15:26, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
- This is a non-controversial edit when well sourced, notability is already established, I generally just do them under that pretense, go ahead with the edit.-- Paid Editor -- User:009o9Talk 18:03, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
Article updates
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
An impartial editor has reviewed the proposed edit(s) and asked the editor with a conflict of interest to go ahead and make the suggested changes. |
Hello. A few more items in this article can be updated based on recent news. Like I have done previously, I've listed the changes and new sources for other editors to review below. Since I am making these suggestions on behalf of BNY Mellon, I will not make any changes myself and ask that other editors do so if everything looks OK.
- In the Recent history section, the sentence "Kurt Woetzel was named the group's president" is no longer accurate. Woetzel has been succeeded by Michelle Neal as the group's president, but rather than update this, I think it makes more sense to just remove the sentence entirely. The source can be kept, since it supports the previous sentence too.
- Done as per discussion-- Paid Editor -- User:009o9Talk 03:19, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
- BNY Mellon sold Meriten, one of its asset management boutiques earlier this year, so the second paragraph of the Investment Management section can be updated to say that the unit has 13 asset management boutiques, and Meriten can be removed the from the list of boutiques in the next sentence. Again, the citation can be kept, because it supports some of the other boutiques in that list.
- Done as per discussion-- Paid Editor -- User:009o9Talk 03:19, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
- Finally, the latest Dow Jones Sustainability Indices were released in September, and BNY Mellon was named once again on the North America and World indices. As such, can the second sentence in the third paragraph be updated using this source to "BNY Mellon was named on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index in 2013[2] 2014, and 2015, and the World Index in 2014 and 2015.[3][4]
- Not done This edit involves another article (Dow Jones Sustainability Indices), should probably be discussed on that talk page and as this is not my edit, not interested in stepping on toes there. Feel free to ping me on that discussion. -- Paid Editor -- User:009o9Talk 03:19, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
I think these should be pretty straightforward, but let me know if there are any questions or concerns. Thanks in advance! Heatherer (talk) 18:42, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

- @Heatherer Actually, I see no reason why the content expert (you), should be precluded from a peer approved routine edit. It will take me three times the amount of time to research and come to understand the context -- which I may, or may not get right the first time. WP:BRIGHTLINE is a failed proposal, here is the central page regarding the paid editing Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
- Alternately, you could write your desired changes for each section in a Template:Talkquote, I'll review the section (on this talk page) I'll inspect it in context.-- Paid Editor -- User:009o9Talk 20:25, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- Additional Two out of three. On first read, I did not realize your third edit concerned a different article, I thought it was a section within this article. (See my Not done comment above.)
- After a "request edit" has been approved on a non contentious update, I believe that the following statement in WP:PAY prevails. "You are very strongly discouraged from editing affected articles where those external relationships could reasonably be said to undermine your ability to remain neutral." (Emphasis mine). Once your edit request has been approved (and with no other contention), we have determined that your (already stated) "external relationship" has not biased the content in question. On routine (approved) edits, I believe that this is WP:STEWARDSHIP and these talk page discussions support that. Cheers -- Paid Editor -- User:009o9Talk 03:54, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
- @009o9: Thank you for making these changes! The third change is intended for this article. The sentence that needs to be updated appears in the Company culture section. My apologies for not laying that out more clearly above.

Routine article maintenance
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hi all! Posting a note to make other editors aware of some new financials and other changes that can be made to this article. I won't make the edits myself, because I have a financial conflict of interest. I am monitoring this article on behalf of BNY Mellon.
- Assets under management can be updated to US$1.6 trillion (Q4 2015)[1] in the infobox and the Investment Management section
- Assets under custody can be updated to $28.9 trillion (Q4 2015)[2] in the Investment Services section
- BNY Mellon opened a new innovation center in November. Both the Recent history and Company culture sections can be updated with this information. Suggested updates are below.
- For Recent history: "It opened the BNY Mellon Innovation Center in Palo Alto in November 2014 and the EMEA Innovation Centre in London in November 2015. Both centers focus on emerging technologies, big data, digital and cloud-based projects.[3][4][5]"
- For Company culture: "The company operates innovation centers in Palo Alto, California; Jersey City, New Jersey; London; Pune and Chennai. The centers focus on developing new technologies and practices for the company.[5][3]"
- Finally, the years the company has been given a A rating by the CDP can be updated in the Company culture section. My suggested update for that is: "The company received a 100 A rating in 2013, 2014 and 2015 by the CDP, which measures corporate greenhouse gas emissions and disclosures.[6][7][8]"
Please let me know if there are any questions about what I'm proposing. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 19:40, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Annual report updates and one leadership change
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hello. I'd like to point editors to BNY Mellon's most recent annual report. From this source, the financials in the infobox can be updated to the following:
- Revenue Decrease US$ 15.194 billion (2015)[1]
- Operating income Increase US$ 4.235 billion (2015)[2]
- Net income Increase US$ 3.158 billion (2015)[1]
- AUM Increase US$ 1.625 trillion (Q4 2015)[1]
- Total assets Increase US$ 393.780 billion (2015)[1]
- Total equity Decrease US$ 35.485 billion (2015)[1]
- Number of employees 51,200 (Dec 2015)[3]
Under Operations, the number of employees, revenue and total assets can be updated. I also noticed that assets under custody has been updated in the Investment Services section, but not the introduction. It should say "$28.9 trillion of assets under its custody and administration".
In addition to these updates, Mitchell Harris is now the CEO of Investment Management business. His name can replace Curtis Arledge in the Leadership section. As noted before, I am working as a paid consultant on behalf of BNY Mellon, and I will not be making any changes myself. Instead, I'm hoping others will review my proposals and make edits where they think it is appropriate. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 21:11, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Heatherer. I have updated the infobox and article with the exception of total equity because BNY Mellon's financial statements gives several different figures with similar names: "total permanent equity", "total BNY Mellon shareholder's equity", etc. and I do not know which one is commonly understood to be "total equity" under Wikipedia's guidelines. Oddly, the link you gave me did not actually contain BNY Mellon's financial statements: I had to go dig up the balance sheets from the SEC's website! Best, Altamel (talk) 05:13, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, Altamel. Apologies for the confusion—I'm sorry you had to do extra work to find the numbers. I pasted in the wrong link above. I meant to link here, though I guess it doesn't help now. Rergarding equity, the 2014 figure in the infobox represents total permanent equity. That seems like it might be the more important figure, though I can't find anything confirming it on Wikipedia either. What do you think? Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 16:25, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- The documentation for Template:Infobox_company says to use shareholder equity, so I went with the figure you gave me and added an explanatory footnote. Altamel (talk) 04:01, 7 May 2016 (UTC)
- Excellent. Thank you so much for doing that! Heatherer (talk) 18:59, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Routine updates
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
As I've done in the past, I'd like to offer several updates for the article based on new developments. They're pretty straightforward improvements, but I will not make them myself based on my financial COI. The edits, along with their location in the article, are listed below for others to review.
- In the introduction and Investment services section – assets under custody now equal $29.5 trillion as of Q2 2016[1] Done /wiae /tlk 21:19, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- In the Infobox and introduction – assets under management now equal $1.66 trillion as of Q2 2016[1] Done /wiae /tlk 21:22, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- In Recent History and Investment Services sections – "Markets Group" is now "BNY Mellon Markets". Here are a few sources using the new name 1, 2. Done /wiae /tlk 21:27, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- Under Business – the client numbers can be updated based on the latest CSR report. The new sentence would read:
- The company also serves 77 percent of the top 100 endowments, 87 percent of the top 1,000 pension and employee benefit funds, 51 percent of the top 200 life and health insurance companies and 50 percent of the top 50 universities.[2] Done /wiae /tlk 21:29, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- Under Recognition and rankings – the company's Fortune 500 ranking is now 179[3] Done /wiae /tlk 21:31, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Finally, BNY Mellon has opened another innovation center, so I think it makes sense to condense the material under Recent history referring to the individual centers to say the following:
- Between 2014 and 2016, it opened innovation centers focused on emerging technologies, big data, digital and cloud-based projects in Palo Alto, London, Pittsburgh, Pune, Chennai, and Jersey City.[4]
This should replace the final three sentences in the section ("It opened the BNY Mellon Innovation Center, an office focused on emerging technologies, big data, digital and cloud-based projects, in Palo Alto in November 2014. It opened the BNY Mellon Innovation Center in Palo Alto in November 2014 and the EMEA Innovation Centre in London in November 2015. Both centers focus on emerging technologies, big data, digital and cloud-based projects.") Done /wiae /tlk 21:35, 20 October 2016 (UTC) I'll be standing by for feedback and thoughts. Thanks! Hi all. Apologies for posting a new request so soon after the last one was implemented, but there have been a couple new developments in recent weeks. I'll post the changes below for others to review.
- Assets under custody (Introduction and Investment services sections) now equal 30.5 trillion and assets under management (Infobox and introduction) now equal $1.72 trillion as of Q3 2016
- Source[1] Done but I have referenced the 10-Q instead Maxime Vernier (talk) 22:33, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
- A new innovation center has opened in New York and can be added to the Recent history section
- Source[2]
- Not done I have looked through the source, and found no mention of a new innovation center being opened in New York. VB00 (talk) 17:30, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- Elizabeth Robinson has been elected to the board and she can be added as a board member to the Leadership section
- Source [3]
- Not done @Heatherer: Considering that you haven't requested the number of directors (15) to be changed, I assume that this information makes sense. However, the source provided mentions a different number (11) of directors. As such, I can't allow this information to pass. Feel free to re-open the edit request once the issues pointed out are fixed. Regards, VB00 (talk) 17:30, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- BNY Mellon has been named to the 2016 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, so this sentence in the Company culture section can be updated with "2016": "BNY Mellon was named on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and the World Index in 2014 and 2015."

- One other request: I just noticed another editor has removed "chairman" from Gerald Hassell's titles in the infobox. I'm not sure why this was done—he's still chairman. Can this be reverted? - Thanks Maxime Vernier for making two of the updates! As a note to other editors: there are still three remaining edits in this request. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 16:12, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
- VB00 Looks like we were posting to the Talk page at the same time! Sorry to have posted a new message before I saw your response to this one. The source does mention the New York innovation center—not that it recently opened, but that it exists. Sorry to be unclear there. My request was simply to add "New York" to the list in the article. My message below includes a different source if you prefer that one. I'm going to double-check the number of board members now. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 17:41, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Financial updates
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hi all. There are updated financial numbers for 2016 to add to this article. Could someone update the infobox with these numbers? For anyone new to the page, I'm posting here on behalf of BNY Mellon as part of my work with Beutler Ink.
- Revenue: Increase US$15.24 billion (2016)[1]
- Operating income: Increase US$4.65 billion (2016)[2]
- Net income: Increase US$3.54 billion (2016)[2]
- Total assets: Decrease US$333 billion (2016)[1]
- Total equity: Decrease US$35.2 billion (2016)[3] Total common shareholders' equity</ref>
- | num_employees = 52,000[3]
In addition, the first sentence of the Investment Management section can be updated as follows:
- OLD TEXT: BNY Mellon's Investment Management business generates 28 percent of the company's revenue and had US$1.6 trillion (Q4 2015) in assets under management."
- CHANGE: US$1.7 trillion (2016)[1]
Even though these edits are not controversial, I prefer to avoid making them myself because of my conflict of interest. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 13:46, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
- Done Altamel (talk) 02:09, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
- Altamel My apologies for missing this! Thank you for reviewing and making the changes. I really appreciate it. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 14:05, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Karen Peetz
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. Once sources are found, you should re-open the request, which will make it more visible (at the top of the list) |
Hello! On December 31st, Karen Peetz retired from BNY Mellon. Peetz is mentioned in the article three times.
- She can be removed from "key people" in the infobox and from the Leadership section
- In Company culture the sentence "In 2009, current president Karen Peetz co-founded the BNY Mellon Women’s Initiative Network (WIN), a resource group for female employees' professional development" might be changed to "former president"
In addition to these changes, I'd like to reiterate two of the requests from my previous message.
- New innovation centers have opened in New York and Singapore and can be added to the Recent history section. There are now eight total
- Source[1]
- Not done Sources don't match up, once again - the list stated on Wikipedia is different from the one stated on the source (without considering New York and Singapore) VB00 (talk) 17:59, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- Elizabeth Robinson has been elected to the board and she can be added as a board member to the Leadership section
- Duplicate proposal VB00 (talk) 17:59, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- Source [2]
I'd appreciate it if another editor could make these changes if possible. As noted here previously, I have a financial conflict of interest with this subject (I'm being paid as part of my work with Beutler Ink to make these suggestions) and will refrain from making the edits myself. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 17:29, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- Due to retire is different from having retired (after all, maybe something has happened?). You should find an article that says that she actually retired. Regards, VB00 (talk) 17:59, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hi VB00. I've been waiting to see if any press comes out announcing Karen Peetz's retirement, but it hasn't and it seems unlikely. BNY Mellon has confirmed that she did indeed retire and has been removed from the company's leadership page. Would that suffice to make the change, especially since we're not claiming anything new, just removing her name and/or her title from the article?
- As for the innovation centers, this source lists all 8 centers. I've cleaned up the entire sentence (revised and removed redundant sourcing). Let me know if this works for you.
- Between 2014 and 2016, BNY Mellon opened innovation centers focused on technology in Silicon Valley, Jersey City, London, Pune, Chennai, Pittsburgh, Singapore, and New York City.[3][4]
- I apologize for the confusion with the board of directors. I didn't realize how outdated the section was. The number in the article I linked above had the correct number (12) at the time, but two new additions were added to the board in December. Here's updated language and sourcing. I hope this is more straightforward.
BNY Mellon is governed by a board of directors with 14 members.[5] As of December 2016, its board members are Nick Donofrio, Joseph Echevarria, Edward P. Garden, Jeffrey A. Goldstein, Gerald L. Hassell, John M. Hinshaw, Edmund F. "Ted" Kelly, Richard J. Kogan, John A. Luke, Jr., Mark Nordenberg, Catherine A. Rein, Samuel C. Scott III, Jennifer B. Morgan, and Linda Z. Cook.[6]

- Great! Thanks for taking a look, VB00. Would you be able to make that change re: innovation centers in the article? Regarding your other suggestion, the CEO of BNY Mellon has not changed. Karen Peetz's title was president and it doesn't appear that anyone else has taken over that role at the company. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 15:02, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Items still open
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. Some or all of the changes may be promotional in tone. |
Hello. I'm starting this subsection to make it easier for other editors to see what still needs to be addressed.
1. Board of directors is outdated. See the "new language" collapse box above for an updated list and sourcing.
2. Karen Peetz announced she was retiring at the end of 2016 and can be removed as "President" from a number of places in the article. BNY Mellon has confirmed that she did indeed retire and has been removed from the company's leadership page. As pointed out above, there aren't independent sources confirming she retired at the end of 2016 (only that she planned to), but there are none stating that she didn't retire, either. Would that suffice to make the change, especially since we're not claiming anything new, just removing her name and/or her title from the article? Alternatively, could the article be updated to note that she announced her retirement and was due to retire at the end of 2016?

Edit request: Routine updates
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hello, I'm here to offer a few updates to this page based on recent developments at BNY Mellon. First, a little housekeeping. Heatherer, who previously posted edit requests on this Talk page, is a former colleague of mine; I will be posting suggested edits here from now on for BNY Mellon as part of my work at Beutler Ink. Similarly to Heatherer and my other colleagues, I will keep my Wikipedia contributions where I have a financial conflict of interest on Talk pages rather than directly edit entries.
Below are a handful of edits that can be made to freshen up this article.
Introduction
We can update the assets under custody and administration to $31.1 trillion as of July 2017.[1]
Operations
Done
|

We can update the number of employees: The company employs 52,000 people as of December 2016.[2] Done Maxime Vernier (talk) 17:35, 25 September 2017 (UTC) |
Investment Services
As with the introduction, we can update assets under custody and administration to $31.1 trillion as of July 2017.[1]
Leadership

This section is no longer accurate, as BNY Mellon has a new CEO (Charles W. Scharf took the role in July 2017), its former CEO will remain chairman through 2017, and its former president has retired (Karen Peetz retired in December 2016).[3]. I propose we rewrite the first paragraph of this section to read:
Charles W. Scharf became CEO of BNY Mellon in July 2017 and is set to become chairman on January 1, 2018.[4] Gerald Hassell, who had been chairman and CEO since 2011,[5] remains chairman until his retirement at the end of 2017.[4] Thomas Gibbons has been CFO since 2008 and also serves as vice chairman.[6] BNY Mellon's Investment Management business is run by CEO Mitchell Harris,[7] and the company's Investment Services business is led by CEO Brian Shea.[8] Also, the paragraph listing BNY Mellon's Board of Directors is inaccurate. It should read: BNY Mellon is governed by a board of directors. As of July 2017, its board members are Linda Z. Cook, Nicholas M. Donofrio, Joseph J. Echevarria, Edward P. Garden, Jeffrey A. Goldstein, Gerald L. Hassell, John M. Hinshaw, Edmund F. (Ted) Kelly, John A. Luke Jr., Jennifer B. Morgan, Mark A. Nordenberg, Elizabeth E. Robinson, Charles W. Scharf and Samuel C. Scott III.[9] Company culture |
Recognition
We can update BNY Mellon's Fortune 500 rating: In 2017, BNY Mellon ranked 177 on the Fortune 500.[10]
Company culture
Can we add Singapore to the list of innovation centers here? This fact is reflected and properly sourced in Recent history.
Lastly, what do editors think of updating List of oldest companies in the United States to include The Bank of New York, founded June 9, 1784?
Please ping me here if you have any questions regarding these suggested edits. Thank you in advance, Danilo Two (talk) 14:00, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- On August 18, an IP editor made a few edits to update the article with recent changes to company leadership. Jytdog reverted those updates, which you can see in this diff. Jytdog's edit summary said "erasing history. no thanks". Jytdog Would you consider reviewing this edit request? I believe what I have here might be a more acceptable option to bring the article up-to-date, while not removing historical detail. While I understand the importance of not erasing history, the article is inaccurate in its current form: Karen Peetz is not president, Gerald Hassell is not CEO, and the makeup of the board of directors is not the same as it was in February 2015. Also, at present the article contradicts itself: The infobox correctly says Charles Scharf is CEO, whereas Leadership incorrectly says chairman and former CEO Gerald Hassell is still chief executive. I am also pinging VB00, who previously reviewed edit requests on this Talk page for a former colleague of mine. Thanks in advance, Danilo Two (talk) 17:07, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

@Danilo Two: Request accepted.Section obviously outdated so your update is a good idea. Cheers!WikiEditCrunch (talk) 14:21, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- I undid, and then redid. There was some PR-speak in the suggestions. There was a mistake in them; Peetz was not president when she founded WIN. I noticed that the bank didn't appoint a new president when Peetz retired; like many institutions it generally handles transitions intentionally, as with the CEO/Chair transition in the suggested edits. User:Danilo Two What is up with the role of President at the bank? Jytdog (talk) 17:48, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- @WikiEditCrunch and Jytdog: Thanks for updating the article regarding BNY Mellon's leadership. And good catch, Jytdog, on the founding of WIN. My apologies. The material looks good now. To your question on the role of president at the bank, I do not have an answer on that; I had only noticed that the article incorrectly said Karen Peetz was still president. I appreciate you fixing it.
- Did either of you have a chance to look at the other updates included in this edit request? Just a few other places where the article could be freshened up. Please ping me here if you have any questions. Thanks, Danilo Two (talk) 16:03, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
- I need to do some more clean up but it is otherwise it is done. Would love to hear back on the president thing. So odd. Jytdog (talk) 18:45, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
- @WikiEditCrunch and Jytdog: Thanks again for the updates. I see this edit request is marked "answered". Should I make a new edit request for my requested updates to assets under custody and administration; number of employees (the December 2015 number in Operations is outdated and could be updated to match the correct December 2016 figure in the infobox); and the 2017 Fortune 500 ranking (the article currently lists last year's ranking)? Please ping me here if you have any questions. Thanks, Danilo Two (talk) 18:08, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

@Jytdog: I see you’ve removed number of employees from the infobox. As this is a standard infobox parameter used extensively across Wikipedia and is a simple data point to show size of company, I’d dispute this is “too much detail”. What do other editors think? Pinging WikiEditCrunch, Altamel, and VB00, who have edited this page in recent months, for their perspective on this. Danilo Two (talk) 17:00, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
- Yep that information is available at their website. For the precise number to be there, is not really encyclopedic. We are not a stock ticker or a current events tracker. All that having the specific data in infobox does, frankly, is create endless makework for the community. Content like the founding date makes sense, as that won't change and won't constantly need "updating". If we are going to have the # of employees, it should be a round number or a range. Jytdog (talk) 17:09, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Jytdog: I understand your reasoning, though I still disagree about it being “too much detail”. As a compromise, including a range or putting back the round figure of 52,000 and adding “approximately” or “around” sounds good to me. Would that work? Danilo Two (talk) 17:26, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hi there. The infobox seems pretty informative, and I don't think that the employee number needs to be included in there (considering that it's mentioned within the text). If it is added, it should probably just be a number (52,000). Just my opinion on the matter. Regards, VB00 (talk) 14:40, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Jytdog and VB00: Since you both weighed in, I'll accept that not including number of employees in the infobox is consensus. Can we update the figure in Operations? It currently uses the 2015 figure. Per our discussion above I suggest we update this using a round number, saying BNY Mellon employs about 52,000 people as of December 2016.[1] Danilo Two (talk) 16:40, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Danilo Two. I've made the edits above, all of which seem reasonable. I didn't see any existing references to 'assets under custody and administration' other than the one in Investment Services. Sean.Bernard (talk) 14:06, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Sean.Bernard: Thanks for updating the article! It looks like assets under custody and administration was formerly included in the introduction but has since been removed. I apologize for any confusion there. Also, can you update the sentence on the Fortune 500 ranking to say in 2017? Thanks again! Danilo Two (talk) 14:24, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
Hi Danilo Two. Sorry--I've updated the year for Forbes. You're all set! Sean.Bernard (talk) 14:57, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Edit request: More updates
Part of an edit requested by an editor with a conflict of interest has been implemented. |
Hello, I'm here offering additional updates to this page. Just as I did above, I am posting these suggested edits for BNY Mellon as part of my work at Beutler Ink. I keep my Wikipedia contributions where I have a financial conflict of interest on Talk pages rather than directly edit entries, so I am hoping editors will review and make these updates if they seem reasonable.
These suggestions are pretty straightforward, so I'll get right to them.
Operations
The last sentence of the introductory paragraph in Operations notes BNY Mellon's revenue and total assets as of 2015. However, the infobox contains more up-to-date figures (from year-end 2016). Using the figures already posted in the infobox, I suggest we change the sentence in Operations to:
- The company's 2016 revenue was $15.23 billion and it held $333.47 billion in total assets as of December 31, 2016[1]
If such detail is too much to continually update throughout the article, perhaps we should remove it from Operations.
Investment management
As has been accurately noted in History, BNY Mellon agreed last month to sell CenterSquare Investment Management. Can we delete CenterSquare from the second paragraph of Investment management?
Sponsorships
The name of the boat race has been changed, so this section is outdated. I propose we rewrite this to say:
- Since 2012, BNY Mellon has expanded its number of sponsorships.[2] It is the title sponsor of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in London, which had been called the BNY Mellon Boat Race from 2012 to 2015.[2][3][4] Since 2016, BNY Mellon and Newton Investment Management donated title sponsorship rights and the event is now called The Cancer Research UK Boat Race.[4][5] The company also sponsors the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.[2] In 2013, the company became a 10-year sponsor of the San Francisco 49ers and a founding partner of Levi's Stadium.[6] The company is a regular sponsor of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.[7]
Please ping me here if you have any questions regarding these suggested edits. Thank you in advance, Danilo Two (talk) 17:37, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Edit request: Founder
Hello, I'm here to offer an update to list the founder of BNY Mellon. My edit was submitted as part of my work at Weareroast, who are currently working with the BNY Mellon EMEA team. The change suggested is as follows, listing the founder of BNY Mellon:
| founder = Alexander Hamilton
The above edit was previously made directly to the page, however upon reading the previous submissions and potential conflict of interest, I've removed this and submitted this contribution to the talk page.
Please message me here if you have any questions regarding this suggested edit.
Many thanks
