I'm Prof.Hla Yee Yee, U Ba Htay's daughter. I wish to point out that your information about my father's background is incorrect. Whilst it is true that he was Chairman of the Boy Scouts Commission, he was never a miner in Mogok. He started as a Tutor in Rangoon University, but that was for a brief period. After he became an ICS (Indian Civil Service) , he was always referred to as 'ICS U Ba Htay'; one of very few elite administrators in the government. Throughout his life, he was an administrator; referred to as 'One of the brightest stars in the administrative sky' in the publication dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the founding of Rangoon University. He held posts such as Commissioner of Settlement & Land Records, Financial Commissioner, Chairman of Burmah Oil Company (when the government took over 51% shares from the BOC). After retirement in 1963, he was brought back onto the public scene as Chairman, Multi Part Democracy Election Commission in 1988, after nation-wide protests , with a demand for a free and fair election .
