Bákó

edit

Dear IP, I do not understand what is your concern about the Hungarian name of Bákó. Please read the article, you may understand why it is important. Borsoka (talk) 06:27, 8 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bacǎu

edit

I also made a similar intervention on a Hungarian town page, introducing a Romanian name. But it was rejected. It is a reciprocal policy. We need very clear rules not suppositions like in the case Bako = Bacau. Bako it is only an hypotheses.

Bacău is from a Cuman name

edit

The historian Victor Spinei showed that Bako is a name of Cuman origin, found among a lot of Turkic languages: Cuman, Turk, Pecheneg, Proto-Bulgar and Hungarian. Near Bacău there are a lot of places with Cuman names, starting with Comăneşti. Also near Bacău there are a lot of artificial hills, constructed by Cumans to be used as tombs. Bacău was part of Cumania

edit

Bacău as all setlements from Moldova was part of Cumania. Even the name is of cuman or pecheneg origin. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.112.19.52 (talk) 09:01, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Even if Moldavia (where Bacau is situated) had been part of Cumania (which is the name of some territories east of the Carpathians from the 13th century), Spinei does not specifically refers to "Pecheneg and Cuman colonists who settled in Bacau". Therefore, the sentence is OR for the time being.
Pechenegs and Cumans controlled Bistriţa valley during the Xth,XIth and XIIth centruries.

Names

edit

Dear IP editor, please read Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#General guidelines point 2: relevant foreign names which were used by a group of people which used to inhabit the place are permitted to be added. Hungarian and German citizens had a preeminent role in the development of Bacau (as it is suggested by the reliable sources cited in the article). Accordingly, the German and Hungarian names should be mentioned. Borsoka (talk) 05:19, 4 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Dear Anon, Please read our relevant guideline applicable worldwide (Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#General guidelines point 2). It clearly states that relevant foreign names which were used by a group of people which used to inhabit the place are permitted to be added. Hungarian and German citizens had a preeminent role in the development of Bacau (as it is suggested by the reliable sources cited in the article). Accordingly, the German and Hungarian names should be mentioned. Would you also delete the Latin or Jiddish names of Alba Iulia, Turnu Severin and other towns in Romania, because there are no Latin- or significant Jiddish-speaking communities in these town any more? Wiki rules:

...the redundant list of the names in the article's first line should be replaced by a link to the section phrased, for example: "(known also by several alternative names)". When there are several significant alternate names, the case for mentioning the names prominently is at least as strong as with two. Once such a section or paragraph is created, the alternative English or foreign names should not be moved back to the first line.

Remind

edit

Just a remind. Consensus should incorporate all editors' legitimate concerns, while respecting Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Some important naming conventions which the article's lead violates (WP:LEAD#General guidelines and WP:LEAD#Separate section usage): Once a Names or Etymology section or paragraph is created, the alternative English or foreign names should not be moved back to the first line. As an exception, a local official name different from a widely accepted English name should be retained in the lead. (Foreign language: Local name; known also by several alternative names)".' If the case is exceptional, common sense may be applied to ignore all rules. Please discuss to decide whether this is an exceptional case or not.2A02:2430:3:2500:0:0:B807:3DA0 (talk) 04:24, 6 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
