Total Rewrite

edit

I completely rewritten the entire article. My goal was to make this more of an encyclopedic article, rather than just an image gallery. In the old version, it contained no info and a lot of red links. Now we have summarized info, and links toward more detailed articles of each badge and insignia. This way we are not obligated to create an article for each individual badge and insignia (just add a "main article" link when you feel like making a detailed article) and we are spared the eye-sore of the red links. Tell me what you think in this talk page. - Jigen III (talk) 11:39, 18 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm a bit confused ... when I was a USCG aircrew candidate (1987-1988), all the ASMs (now ASTs) went to NAS Pensacola, FL, for rescue swimmer training and certification. In fact, the AvTechTraCen "rescue swimmer" school was a prepatory program prior to undergoing the very rigorous training in FL. (In those years, a trainee drowned, and it sent shudders through the the USCG aviation community. ASMs knew full well just how strenuous the training was.)

So ... why no Navy rescue swimmer badge listed here? Oversight? -- David Spalding (  ) 21:15, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rescue swimmers dont get a special badge. They are qualed as Air Crew and therefore recieve the gold AC badge. RS is just another qual that falls under aircrew. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wedge donovan (talkcontribs).

Coast Guard aircrew rescue swimmers have a separate badge. I guess that's a "Coastie thing." Thanks, David Spalding (  ) 03:01, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Am I the only one who reads uniform regulations?

edit

Someone merged Aircrew with Aviation Warfare. "Aviation Warfare" is a distinct category from "Aircrew" and is described as so in article 5201 found here [1]. Marksmanship is not an insignia, it's a badge described in the Awards section, article 5310 found here [2]. I'm not actively editing military articles anymore, and it saddens me when someone makes an edit based on assumptions. Please check the references in the article if you're not sure of something. It seems this needs repeating:

  • Article 5101 lists "identification badges" [3]
  • Article 5201 lists "breast insignia" [4]
  • Article 5301-5319 describes other worn awards [5]
    • Scroll down to 5310 for marksmanship

Please note what is actually listed in each article. In particular with recent edits, only accoutrements listed in 5201 are breast insignia. Jigen III (talk) 03:19, 17 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Strategic Sealift Officer Warfare Insignia

edit

Wikipedians, Does anyone have information on whether the proposed Strategic Sealift Officer Warfare Insignia (SSOWI) was every approved? It looks like the award criteria for the SSOWI has been approved but I don't see any information on whether the proposed SSOWI insignia design] has been approved. If anyone has information on this, it would be a good thing to add to this page. --McChizzle (talk) 21:00, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Revised Images

edit

Although lower resolution, it appears that the insignia pictured here are better photographed than the images currently used. Should the current images be updated to use these better picture but lower quality images? - Dan Moberly (talk) 12:16, 3 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for sharing that link Danmoberly. I used the images of the SSOWI and NWS Insignia as well as the law enforcement shields. I'll let others decide if they want to use some of the image on that Navy PDF to update other insignia and badges. Note: For those interested in using the images on the Navy PDF, be advised that they have the old law enforcement badges pictured on the PDF. The new ones can be found on page 8 and 9 of the Uniform Board Update PDF. --McChizzle (talk) 23:08, 5 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Still nothing for Master Training Specialist, huh?

edit

When I was an instructor at Service School Command Great Lakes from 1996-2000 there was a big push for everyone to get Master Training Specialist. There was no bade for it then and it seems there is still not one for it. That's a shame. Eric Cable  !  Talk  13:18, 31 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

New SWO pin for Chaplains

edit

As of 2023, there is a new design for the Surface Warfare Officer pin. This pin is authorized for Chaplains. I'm an amateur, and have no idea how to edit the pages (either this or the "Surface Warfare Insignia") to reflect this addition.
