Talk:Bahrain health worker trials

A start, but questions remain

edit

I'm off to a start here, but for a topic this complicated, I have some questions left if anyone has answers.

1) How many doctors are on trial? (some sources say 48, some 47) 2) Can we find more sources on specific actions of doctors during the Feb. protests? Considering how key that is to this story, I was disappointed to not find more. 3) Where do things stand now? I couldn't find many current updates on my first workthrough of Google sources.

First let me say that to write this much in one day is such an amazing thing.
1) This PHR reports says they're 48, however 47 of them are Shia (that's probably why they're mixing the numbers).
2) I can find images and videos (I myself took some) and there is probably much info in human rights reports. Some of them such as this, this and this tackled the issue in great detail.
3) Trials are still ongoing, this needs more research, but anyway I found two sources in Arabic (which you can always use google translator to get 70-80% accurate translation): [1] and [2] Mohamed CJ (talk) 08:53, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
From what I know about the case, I find the article missing the following things:
  1. Trail on September 2011 lasted for only five minutes.
  2. Doctors protested inside the hospital parks and organized protests from there to Pearl Roundabout. They also organized sit-ins front of Ministry of Health.
  3. Government accused them of violating patients' privacy
  4. Most Doctors were released on bail, but some such as Younis Ashoori are still imprisoned.
  5. Most charges were dropped and the recorded confessions were not used as evidence anymore.
  6. Remember that guy Mubarak bin Huwel who allegedly tortured Mahdi Abu Deeb? Doctors say he was their main torturer. He is also the main witness against them, he says he has "private" sources for the info and won't even share the sources with the court. He also was absent for few months despite calling him to court for questioning by lawyers many times.
  7. Some Doctors found the charges funny and were laughing. I remember reading this in Al Jazeera after their trial when the AK-47s were brought to court, but I didn't find it.
  8. This is all I remember currently, I'll do some research and get back to you. Mohamed CJ (talk) 09:08, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Great images! I've only included one for now, since all three are from the same day, and I don't want to overemphasize this. (Since some of the accused appear to have not joined the protests at all, I worry that adding all three images would give a disproportionate impression.) I also cleared up the 47/48 issue. Unfortunately, the Al-Wasat is translating too poorly for me to be sure of what I'm reading--I might leave that update to you. Now let me tackle the rest of this... Khazar2 (talk) 19:47, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I worked through your other links and included what seemed to be the significant new info from there. While this trial has stopped and started so many times that it's hard to give a play-by-play, the trial stuff now seems up-to-date. Feel free to add in any further omissions you see, though. Khazar2 (talk) 20:11, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, the one major point I still didn't see sources for--who's on bail, and who's still in jail. Also, what happened to the 28 charged with misdemeanors? They appear to drop out of discussion and news coverage after the initial arrests. I also didn't see a source on the length of the initial trial that you mentioned above, but there's so much material here that I easily could have overlooked it. Khazar2 (talk) 20:14, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'll search for answers. This HWR report has good info about trials. This is a source for the five-minute trial. Mohamed CJ (talk) 23:08, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, that was for teacher's trial. This and this say the medics trial only lasted for few minutes (another source says 14-activist trial too only lasted for few minutes - sorry for confusion, blame the judges, not me lol). Mohamed CJ (talk) 23:14, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
No problem--it's pretty clear the judges are confused, too. =) Added fact to article. Khazar2 (talk) 23:29, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
