Nickname.. East Kew High?

I know this is a trivial issue but is that really true? Obviously it is east of Kew High but I've never heard it refered to as that by anyone. Its i a somewhat misleading tidbit to include, as there obviously is no East Kew High - Kew High is about as east as Kew gets. It just seems out of place without an explanation. Comments anyone? • I go to Balwyn High and have never heard it called East Kew High. I doubt it is a nickname for it.

The Article exhibits a definite bias. References to the schools 'reputation' are unfounded and arguably irrelevant. - 18/01/06

Neutrality dispute

I do not think that this article is written in a purely historical manner, but borders on the edge of advertising. An example being the sentence: "The school has a notable student leadership program and strongly emphasises on student voice". It is these types of sentences which should be reworded. Bah12345 (talk) 08:31, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

With regards to the neutrality of the article, it appears that ample time has been given to attempt to re-write or remove the bias within this article. If you look at comparable articles, such as Blackburn High School and other Victorian state schools, they do not read like an advertisement, unlike this article. Words such as "notable" and "wide variety" are more suited to promotional material rather than a Wikipedia article. I will do my best to completely remove the bias for good. Sport

The section relating to sport is very brief and lacking any more detailed information, perhaps an indication of what sports are offered and in what competition sports are played (ie. inner eastern metropolitan district of the VSSSA ) would be more informative? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Athorbs (talkcontribs) 13:16, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Balwyn High School article bias

Whilst the "reputation" or "performance" of Balwyn High School is relevant to possibly readers of this article, overall this piece presents itself as a one of simple marketing. This is ultimately against the very nature of wikipedia, and furthermore only reveals the grim nature of society in that a school, a vestige of education and free spirit, must descend to such a level to attract students. Further in this regard the reputation portrayed of Balwyn High itself comes under question as a "marketing pamphlet", possibly by the school itself, is hardly an objective standpoint to judge reputation.

  • I agree that the article could be written in more neatural language. However you're quite wrong to say the school is going to any level to attract students -- on the contrary, Balwyn is trying to keep students away in order to deal with a massive problem of overcrowding, as anyone with a house almost in the zone will agree. The school is virtually impossible to get into
  • I agree. I don't think the article is too bad but certain bits do read like a pamphlet. Although as an ex-student of the school and Balwyn resident, it is quite clear that BHS has a very strong reputation, and the line "In fact, some professional and mercantile families move to live within the school zone so that their children might have be eligible for entry to the school." is certainly true - "for sale" signs in the area always point out "IN BALWYN HIGH SCHOOL ZONE!" So I think the appropriate course of action would be to keep most of the POV statements but enclose them in a "Balwyn residents believe" sort of thing. Maybe I'm not the right person to do it though. —EatMyShortz 04:13, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
I've tried to rewrite a bit. One thing that would help is a proper infobox and a translation of the motto. Not much call for Latin in the Arctic. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 06:04, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Good work, Cambridge! The motto means "constantly faithful" - I'll add that now and an infobox. If you have any questions about the school put them here and I'll try to answer them. —EatMyShortz 08:45, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Almost there. "Ac" equates to "and" in English. As taught to us in the 1960's the school's motto means "Constant and Faithful" not "constantly faithful" which has an entirely different connotation. (Alanoutaoz (talk) 15:27, 19 July 2011 (UTC))
I made a few fairly minor edits to the content in order to tame the POV tone a bit. I think it's close enough to NPOV to remove the tag. OhnoitsJamieTalk 23:25, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
  • I Do not agree that this article is neutral to any course. If you would like to visit any other school articles on wikipedia, it provides historical facts about the school and information on previous principals and notable events or student achievements. There is this underlying culture in Balwyn High School where it is becoming really narrow minded and you see teachers being assigned solely to edit the Article on this school just like it is an advertisement. Is Wikipedia a place for advertisements? There needs to be an uphaul on the neutrality of this article and more facts and history about the school added without it being deleted as it has been in the past. Wikipedia is a place for knowledge and information, not a place for schools to advertise. I am definately sure that the history of Balwyn High School is what makes it reputable today, not its fancy spending and Oversea student program that does not benefit local students. First, we sold our companies and jobs overseas, now we sell our children's education overseas. Moreover, the constant editing by personnel's of this site is blantant censorship of information and debate. A moderator must allow keen contributors to add to this article without the scurtiny of the School personnel. Wikipedia must remain a free place for people to share their knowledge.
I have to agree with you here. The article is almost certainly written by staff or other personnel from the school. Who else would write it like an advertisement? Like I state below, I will try my best to eliminate the bias. Please feel free to help out or suggest. Flipper24 (talk) 11:28, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree as well into changing the wording to a more neutral text. As a student who just started this year, I find it a great school. Although, being a member or a quite wealthy family and living in the zone, I am proud and pleased to say I'm a student at the school. Also, the school can be bias towards students living in zone, leaving the school the chance to induct high achieving students from asian countries, this fact is proven by staff if asked. The school's very good reputation is well reflected onto its Student Wellbeing Code of Conduct, its Co-Curricular Programs, its exceptance into student voice and learning curriculam in general. Yes however, no matter how good the school may be, Wikipedia is not for articles written like advertisements. It is one of Wikipedia's major problems, with members of a particular organisation writing articles for themselves and making into a blatant advertisement, like what this article used to be. Flipper24 (talk) 06:54, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the issue of entrance into Balwyn High School, it is virtually impossible to enter because any spare position are ultimately reserved for those "only quality" students from Asia who pay much more than local students pay. (in the $10 thousands) To assume that because "sale" signs around the neighborhood claim that its in the School Zone - indciates that people move in solely to secure a position for their children in the school is rather ignorant. Property agents go to all measures they can find to sell the property at a premium price which is their job. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.190.88.170 (talk) 13:32, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Does Philip Mallis - councillor, meet Wikipedia criteria for Notable alumni?

Philip Mallis - councillor has been added to the "Notable alumni" section of this article. Does he meet Wikipedia criteria for "Notable alumni"? See Wikipedia talk:Notable alumni for discussion on the subject. I don't know Mr Mallis, but cannot see any reliable independent reference online that supports the assertion that he is notable: very energetic & a early achiever, but technically notable, not so sure? Can anyone help? Cheers Melbourne3163 (talk) 20:01, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Smokers Hill

I added a section briefly explaining smokers hill. Those who would like to expand on that are encouraged.
